Description

Inspired by a real event, this is the fictional tale of a little girlwhose parents win Wayne Gretzky's hockey stick at an auction. When thechild begins to play with it, she becomes her team's star. Meanwhile,"The Great One" goes into the greatest slump of his career. Realizing he needs the stick more than she does, the girl returns it to him, andGretzky gets over his thousand-goal hump. Peter Maloney andFelicia Zekauskas really did win a Gretzky hockey stick at an auction, and The Great One subsequently did go into a slump. The authors haveturned their adventure into THE book for young sports fans, with cleverrhyming verse, witty pictures, and a heartfelt theme about what it means to give. They will donate a percentage of proceeds from this book tothe New York Presbyterian Hearst Burn Center for Pediatric Burn Care, which held the original auction. American Bookseller made the duo's first book, Redbird at Rockefeller Center, a fall 1997 Pick of the Lists, and called it "reminiscent of Dr. Seuss classics." With The Magic Hockey Stick, they've done it again! Read more

  • So fun for the hockey lover!
Format: Paperback
This is such a fun little story for your little hockey fan! We read it often in our house to our 3, 5, and 7 year olds!

  • A real treat for kids and adults
Format: Paperback
My 2 and 4 year old like hockey and they love this book. We picked it up at the library and were very pleasantly surprised to find such a refreshingly modern book. It is about a family that accidently end up buying Wayne Gretzky's hockey stick at an auction. The daughter plays hockey and the stick helps her to play better. But in the mean time, Wayne Gretzky goes into a slump without it. The girl decides she must return the stick to him. I cannot do the book justice though. It is a rhyming verse book that is so easy to read and there is alot of humor in it, yet it has a nice lesson. My kids have tons of books but they love this one and it is one that I do not get sick of reading. Thank you to the author's for something new and refreshing. ... show more

  • Multi Generational Fun!
Format: Paperback
This was my son’s favorite book growing up. We read it almost every night and my husband would read the line “Return the man’s lumber” in a deep loud voice every time. My son now reads this book to his sons and does the same deep voice. My grandsons love it just as much! Such a great book! ♥️

  • A Favorite for my 2.5 year old
Format: Paperback
My 2.5 year old insists I read this to him every night. He's quite obsessed with hockey. Even though the book might be a good book for an older age group as well, it is still perfect for the younger crowd too.

  • Cute
Format: Paperback
This is actually a purchase I regularly make for work. My manager loves hockey, and this book is a staple in her gift-giving bin. Each time a client has a baby, we send this book as a gift. It's a really cute book, I can understand why it is a family favorite for her!

  • It has a nice flow, with rhyming sentences
Format: Paperback
This is a cute story. I bought it because the primary character is a girl and I think more sports books should include female roles. It has a nice flow, with rhyming sentences. But the plot is a lacking a bit. Overall a great bedtime story for the young hockey enthusiast- boy or girl!

  • Sweet Story
Format: Paperback
This is a sturdy book, definitely good quality for a paperback book. We loved the story, and whether or not you’re a hockey fan, you will too!
