  • Great Book for Intermediate or Better Player
Format: Paperback
I like the song selections and the quality of the book and the tabs. But I am not to a level yet to play this material much less at speed. I am still at a beginner level so most of my tabs are 1/8th notes, with very few 1/16th notes, etc. This is all 1/16 notes and beyond - the real deal. But I kept the book because it gives me something to reference to work toward. Price was better than I could get locally too. Looking forward to being able to play from this book. ... show more

  • These songs are not for the faint-hearted.
Format: Paperback
I have looked for a book like this since I first started playing banjo and came under the thrall of the banjo music of Earl Scruggs. A note for note transcription of virtually every one of his most iconic works. Hal Leonard's original version is great but outdated and with notable mistakes although its value still lies in that it includes a few noteworthy tunes (Earl's Breakdown, Groundspeed, Sally Goodin, Sally Ann, John Henry) that this present volume does not include. Having listened to the original recordings of almost all these works, imagine my delight in finally seeing how they are actually written! Several comments are needed. These are all advanced and beyond advanced tunes. The average banjo player will be able to pick out the melody but no one short of a professional can play these songs up to speed and no one will ever play them like Earl. The best players in the world (Bela Fleck, JD Crowe, etc) don't even try, they just play the instrument with their own unique style. It's unrealistic to criticize the book for that reason but it's good to know to avoid disappointment. Flipping through the book is a journey through all his music and the wonderful recordings that they bring to mind. I will work with them in the painstaking fashion that they usually require and be able to achieve some semblance of the song. A work for any serious fan of the banjo and/or Earl Scruggs. But to play a version of these songs, find a simpler version on the Internet!! ... show more

  • Great. Iok
Format: Paperback
I liked that it had hard to fine Banjo licks that are the way Earl played them. Can't get that these days

This book is really informative. Great song selection. It can be used along with the original Earl Scruggs. Make sure you get them both. You won't regret it!
