Description

Devil's Playground (1976) comes to life on Blu-ray with special features, O-ring packaging, and artwork.Internationally renowned filmmaker Fred Schepisi's celebrated first feature is a lushly photographed period drama detailing a young boy's coming-of-age in a strict Catholic seminary in 1950s Victoria.A semi-autobiographical retelling of the director's own training for the priesthood, the story follows 13-year-old Tom Allen (Simon Burke), a serious, likable boy whose calling for the church is complicated by guilt associated with his masturbation and sinful thoughts. While the ascetic Brother Francine (Arthur Dignam) prowls the school's corridors looking for evidence of 'the undisciplined mind', the hard-drinking Brother Victor (Nick Tate) refutes the harsh discipline that scars the hearts and minds of the students - through each battle a desire to consummate the pleasures of the flesh. This Australian film classic cemented the rise of director Fred Schepisi (The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith) when it won six AFI awards including Best Film and Best Director and made a breakthrough screening at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976.Extras:Featurette with director Fred Schepisi and key cast and crewInterview with Fred Schepisi 39 mins- Audio Commentary with Fred SchepisiStills GalleryTheatrical Trailer

  • Devil's Playground
In the U.S. Armed Forces, as an officer, I have traveled in several foreign countries, developed a cosmopolitan regard for different cultures. Also, it was my privilege to brief subordinates on cultural differences so that such behaviors did not compromise military regulations that required their conformance with no exceptions. From an Australian's point of view in regards to the sitz im leben fo that nation, for Roman Catholics especially, it is no surprise to see this DVD identified as "Australia's Most Honored Film" in 1976 - and into the present. Many families both religious and humanist have no option but to send their sons and daughters to Boarding Schools, due to the Australian Outback and location of schools. For a young boy ca. ages 11-13 who is coming of age, viz. puberty, away from home, in a single sex boarding school, the film depicts the emotional-sexual challenges any boy must come to terms over. Indeed, it is a Devil's Playground not restricted by age. In a very constructive manner, the challenges to Roman Catholic Priests to sustain their vows of celibacy are portrayed. Teenage suicide is a fact of life, and the single incident portrayed in this DVD film is very constructive to gain the attention of Adult and Minor. The Director had the courage to apply his personal experiences to some very controversial subjects to alert any Parent, Guardian, Authority Figure - and youth also - to be aware of the tension between repressed desires and doctrines. This DVD is useful to others who are not from the Roman Catholic community to consider how to address in a positive manner "coming of age" matters - and what can happen if negative methods usurp meaningful, compassionate understanding. ... show more

  • This is one of the better gay movies.
This is not the best teenage gay movie I have ever seen, but neither is it the worst. Filmed entirely in Australia it is about two gay teenagers who were into each other. This is what I would call a boarding school romance. There is a little intimate sexual behavior. One of the students got expelled for the love affair. Even some of the adult Jesuit priests who were charged with looking after the boys had their own demons. I bought the movie because I liked choice homosexual movies. I wish that this movie could of been video streamed with an option to rent. This is the kind of movie I liked. Another one that is a personal favorite of mine is called North Sea Texas. This is a gay love affair video between two teenage boys. I highly recommend that movie if you are interested in quality gay movies. I also just love the way those Australians talk. There accent is very unique. I loved Simon Burke when he played as Allan in this 1976 gay movie. ... show more

  • Life-affirming
I can see why this film won so many awards when it came out in 1976. It is beautifully acted by all the principal players, has some fine photography and at its core is the theme of the stultifying atmosphere of a Roman Catholic school for boys destined for the priesthood. But the hormone-laden youngsters fight a losing battle, and while some manage to suppress and progress down the path of righteousness, others fail and sin. It is a wonderful film thoroughly worth watching, unless you are looking for sexual titillation in which case you will be disappointed, as the subject is treated tastefully with subtlety and finesse. ... show more

  • Cute but serious look at adolescent struggles
This is really well done I thought. Good actors ... It’s sort of a fly-on-the-wall look at life in a catholic boy’s school in Australia. It follows central character 13 yr old Tom Allen and his and other boys’ and even faculty struggles with sexual desire and life In general and relying on God.

  • Truth in the telling
This true story I had to watch a few times as it was one of those "to make you think" film's. It had a few twist and turns...then I figured it out. Pretty good acting makes this film desirable and it's trueful presentation of facts is not overdone!
