  • Beautiful story about the joy of giving with a Christian message
Format: Paperback
With all of the consumerism literally consuming us during this Christmas season, I decided to purchase this book for my 5 and 3 year old boys to help them understand the true meaning of Christmas. We've always been fans of the Berenstain Bear books and this one is just as good as the others we have. The story is about Brother and Sister Bear and their roles in the annual Nativity Christmas play at their church. As they listen to the story of the birth of Jesus and the gifts of the wise men, they begin to understand the meaning of Christmas. Some people have complained about the religious message of the book, so if you're looking for something that is more generic, try reading the Berenstain Bears Think of Those in Need. It doesn't have the Christmas theme, but it does talk about the Bears giving to others, especially with all of their excess stuff. Those who are looking for a Christian themed giving book, this one is perfect. It also includes thoughtful questions in the end to discuss with your children. Both of my sons enjoyed it and our older one is really starting to understand the concept of giving to others. I especially loved the part when they begin singing Silent Night. I was so overcome by the emotion of it all and even started to cry. All in all it's a great book and I too was surprised by the Christian themes, but I was pleasantly surprised. There are other alternatives for those looking for something else. ... show more

  • I really loved this Christmas book that talks more about good choices ...
Format: Paperback
I really loved this Christmas book that talks more about good choices and behaviors with gift giving and receiving at Christmas instead of all the standard books about santa and the magic in getting gifts. I enjoy books about Christ and his birth and influence on Christmas too but this is a great addition to our Christmas book collection that helps children think of and understand that Christmas is more than getting things. As parents we try to guide our children to appreciate gifts big and small and to think of others and what to give to make them happy and this book is perfect in helping teach thoughtfulness towards others. ... show more

  • Worth the price
Format: Paperback
My child loves these books and I love the price! Since he keeps asking for more, this was the perfect choice for bed time reading in the days leading up to Christmas. Brother and Sister learn that Christmas is not just about receiving gifts but about giving AND the birth of baby Jesus.....exactly what I wanted to teach my child. ... show more

  • Sweet story
Format: Paperback
I wasn't sure quite what to expect upon reading some of the reviews for this book, but since we love the Berenstain Bears, I went ahead and ordered it. I thought that the story was very sweet and simple for children. Brother & Sister are both behaving selfishly in the beginning of the book and realize why we truly celebrate Christmas and exchange gifts. they decide that they want to donate the money they have left over to others. I actually think it's somewhat amusing that reviewers would criticize this book by saying that this has an underlying Christian message as though it would be a bad thing. This is a book about CHRISTMAS, a holiday celebrated by Christians so if you celebrate the holiday (& the birth of Christ) you wouldn't find it offensive. If you teach in a public school, you may not want to read this to the class. Also, the reviewers should consider that it is part of the Living Lights collection of Berenstain Bear books which tend to promote biblical themes. We enjoyed the book & read it several times. ... show more

  • So Refreshing!!!
Format: Kindle
There is nothing wrong with Santa Claus-a jolly and magical old man who spends his entire year working to make children happy with no though of receiving anything in return, aside from a few stale cookies and luke warm milk ;). But as a Christian mother I sometimes feel that the holiday would be more aptly named Santa-mas. There is a frustrating lack of Christ in modern Christmas media. This book is the exception! It is a beautiful, simple, and engaging retelling of the first Christmas in Bethlehem. I even got a little teary as I read it to my 5 year old. Merry Christmas! ... show more
