  • definitely suitable for a beginner
I am new to doing work with metal so I didn't have a lot of expectations going into my purchase. I am still working on my technique (I got this for work-hardening wire, primarily, but I do want to get into stamping later, and this seems like it will be good for that as well). I am not always the most precise person, so I wanted this 4 x 4 size instead of something smaller. (For what it's worth, I don't have the cash to outlay for precious metal wire. I'm sticking to copper and other base metals for practice. These materials are in my price range!) It seems the quality on these can be variable, but the one I received was well-made. (It is possible a more expert eye would find a flaw, but I did not.) It looks exactly like the product image. It was super heavy, but then, that's what you would expect from a solid block of metal. Because it is heavy, it won't slide around on your work surface (do work on a flat surface, though). I have been using this on top of a placemat so I don't damage my (wood) table when hammering. I think this also cuts down on the noise, but I live in a single-family home so noise is not too much of an issue anyway. I don't have fancy machined tools or calipers or surfaces in my home, but to my eye, the angles were all 90 degrees and the surfaces were flat, and the size was as advertised (except for this being a little less than 3/4 inch thick; since I was looking to work with the large, flat surface, this is not an issue for me). The surface of mine was not marred or scratched in any way. It did have a small amount of oil on it (to prevent rusting) but the oil did not damage the protective cardboard box it arrived in at all. (When you re-oil, be sure to work in an area with good ventilation. If you need to remove the oil, a solvent like acetone -- in nail polish remover or in big cans at hardware stores -- will work. Don't use water to clean it as water can contribute to faster rusting of steel items.) Thus far, I have not damaged the surface with my hammering. I am certainly not abusing this thing; I'd classify my use as light at this point. But for me, as a beginner, this is perfect. It was inexpensive enough for me to try it out and see how I like wire working (so far, so good!) without taking shortcuts. If I had it to do over again, I'd buy this same one to start out with. ... show more

  • This is what my life has come to...
Reviewing a block of steel. It's steel. Like Steely Dan. We named our dog Josie after the Steely Dan song. Now wondering if I need to rename her Steel. Or name this chunk of metal Dan. Pity me for my life choices.

  • Very heavy.
It is so heavy it doesn't move around at all. Solid metal. Works perfectly.

  • Good Anvil
I had previously ordered this item, but when the package arrived, it was the wrong item. I immediately contacted Amazon, and they provided a return shipping label and provided a full refund. When I attempted to re-order, the item showed but was unavailable because a note posted by Amazon indicated they were investigating the quality and the shipping practices of the seller. I kept the item in my wish list and discovered it was again available, although at a slightly higher price (a bit over $1 more). I received the bench block in a timely manner, and it was packaged well. I could clearly see the oil inside the clear plastic wrap, and prepared for the wrap removal by placing the entire package on a paper towel. After I removed the outer wrapping, I wiped the entire block with a paper towel sprayed with denatured alcohol. All oil removed promptly. As a side note, all the oil on the block was a light yellow, which indicates clean oil. There were no traces of anything rough in the oil either. The block has a satin finish. Although I can see the finish with my naked eye (ok, with my "cheater" glasses on), the finish did not transfer to my metal. I flattened and work hardened with a leather mallet both Bronze and Fine Silver with no transfer of finish nor marring to the block's surface. I also like the the larger size for when I'm working with larger jewelry/art pieces (I also have a smaller bench block for smaller work, e.g., ear wires, wire bails). ... show more

  • Excellent Bench Block
The 4" x 4" work surface makes hammering larger pieces like bangle bracelets, hoop earrings and such quick and easy! My small anvil is great for small jobs, but wasn't cutting it for the bigger ones, so working on this has been a real pleasure! It is solid, HEAVY, nicely machined and very smooth. It comes in its own box - great for storing. The block is coated with a thin layer of oil to prevent corrosion of the steel, so be sure to wipe that off well before working. I've used it a lot for about a week and it is showing some small signs of wear from misplaced blows of the hammer, which is to be expected. Not enough to cause any transfer issues though, which is great. Shipping was quick, well packaged, and price was the best I could find anywhere! Highly recommend. ... show more

  • Very sharp edges!
Be very careful, as my block has very razor sharp edges! I don't know how well this will hold up. Will update my review later. It is very heavy, which seems to br a good thing.

  • so that's nice. I does slide a bit if you put ...
What is there to say about a solid plate of steel? Not much really. But what I can say is positive. I bought this so I could shape and beat the heck out of some copper that I'm using for a couple different projects. I pounded some copper completely senseless, and this thing didn't show the slightest ding. It's heavy too, so that's nice. I does slide a bit if you put it on a slick surface as you work, so be aware of that and secure it properly before going bonzo on it. Overall, you get what you think you get... a nice, solid, steel block to do metalwork on. Good value. ... show more
