  • Great book for first timers or old hats
Format: Kindle
Years ago, my family adopted a stray off the streets. She was awful. She would run up behind children, grab them by their knees and drag them around the yard. It was painful, to say the least. We were on the edge of sending her off when we got /How to be Your Dog's Best Friend/ by the same monks. After applying the techniques in that book, that dog ended up being the most loving, gentle animal and even helped some of my friends overcome their fears of dogs. BIG change. She was always headstrong and stubborn, but the monk's advice helped to make her responsive and kind. I just got my second puppy, so I thought I would get this book by the same folks on puppy-raising. We got to meet his litter and watch them playing (a good piece of advice from the book). We decided to take home the biggest pup, who was crawling all over the others even at 4 weeks old (we did not take him home when we first met him (there's more on that in the book!)). We knew he would be a handful, and he is (there was a lot of amazing insight on how to choose a puppy in--you guessed it--the book!). We didn't follow everything to the letter, but pretty generally follow their advice. He's 8 months now and when I take him out in public people ask me if he is a 10-year-old service dog because he is so well-behaved (was asked this exact question thrice the last time I took him with me on the ferry. They always guess 10 years, too. Kinda weird, right?). The most helpful information, I thought, was on developmental stages. The info on training is really great, but they also include a ton of info on your puppy's development so that you know how to use what training methods as they go through different phases. Even if you are someone with a lot of experience with dogs and dog training, it never hurts to read more; and these guys know what they're talking about. ... show more

  • Oh, yes. Written by people who actually train dogs and know what they’re talking about.
Format: Hardcover
AN EXTREMELY USEFUL BOOK, if you have or are going to get a dog. Puppy to old rescue included. Covers the basic commands and more. The writers have raised multitudes of puppies (It’s their business.) and know of what they speak. They care about the dog, the owner and getting it right. This is, perhaps, the most humane book about dog training, I’ve ever encountered. (I suggest purchasing this book about 2-4 weeks before getting a dog, if possible.) ... show more

  • INVALUABLE for dog and puppy owners alike
Format: Kindle
Absolutely INVALUABLE resource! I have powered through numerous puppy/dog training books in preparation for creating the most balanced positive life for a new puppy soon. I constantly refer back to this book, and I have taken my perspective gained from this book on to each of the successive dog books I read. Without a doubt, this is my most-recommended book to other dog owners and potential dog-owners. I cannot stress its usefulness enough. The book details puppyhood from birth on, giving the reader an understanding of why puppies behave the way they do, and how the experience the world. The book starts with puppy birth description in the wild, as wolves. The monks take this information to puppy rearing in a domestic setting, both in their monastery and to your theoretical home. The book is concise and uses express DETAILS in explaining how to raise your dog in the very formative months up throuhg the first year. It was a very straightforward, logical, and insightful approach, both reaffirming beliefs and educating me on aspects of dog psychology/training I was previously unfamiliar with. The book includes citations of sources and additional recommended reading, which I am finding helpful as well. This is a must-have for establishing a positive start to your dog's life with you, and an absolutely invaluable resource. Cannot recommend highly enough. ... show more

  • Great insight into raising a puppy
Format: Kindle
This is an excellent book that does really well to set the tone of what to expect and how to get the best out of raising a puppy into a well adjusted dog. It gives great insight into what makes dogs/puppies tick and helps you understand a lot more of the "why" rather than just the "what" of dogs. I am taking off one star because the advice in the book can be a little tough to turn into an action plan in some places. In particular, the book provides some great insight on how to handle the first day and first night, as well as some good tips about crate training. In one section it provides a sample crate training daily schedule of food/play/walks/crate-time, etc. -- In the very same schedule it says that you should be prepared to take your pup out to expel once every 1.5 hours while training, but in another part of the same section says to leave your pup in the crate not longer than "3 hours at a time" -- the sample schedule seems closer to the 3hr rule. This seeming contradiction makes it hard to follow and leaves you feeling like you need to guess or just make up your own mind. The other reason that I'm taking off one star is that while the book provides great insight and advice on various parts of the pup's life and how to deal with different things, it falls short of providing a comprehensive plan that includes tips on how to decide when to transition between phases. An example is that while there is a great set of tips on crate training, there isn't any information on how you determine that you are "done" with house-training. I think the Monk's have the knowledge and ability to take this to what I'd consider a 5-star book, if they tweaked it a bit to address these issues. Overall, this book is a must-read if you want to gain insight into your dog's psyche - which you absolutely should, because you're going to share your life with it. It falls short of being a one-stop-shop, but you can probably close those gaps with a bit of Googling, or perhaps a supplemental book. ... show more

  • Outstanding Advice
There are about 170 reviews of this book already on Amazon, so I do not want to take up too much more space with our opinions. My wife and I have the following comments about this great book: 1. Easy to read and apply the information. We have Pekingese dogs and not the large dogs that are cited in the book. Still, the Pekes are quite stubborn and demanding. The techniques advised in this book worked well to train our dogs. 2. Outstanding insight into how your dog thinks. We think the best aspects of this book deal with providing solid insight based on years of experience and fairly good science as to how dogs interact with humans and others. This allows you as the owner to better relate to your dogs and the training/behavioural aspects advised in the book make much more sense and are easier to implement in a consistent fashion. 3. Excellent use of photographs to enhance the text. 4. We have lent our book to at least 2 other people (maybe more) and purchased this book for family members and referred many others to get it for their new dogs. We cannot say enough good things about this wonderful book. ... show more

  • Even though I'll use other methods...
Format: Kindle
There is old school choke-chain training and the new focus on rewards only. This book is somewhat inbetween but definately more toward the reward system. The old-school element here is mostly using mild, very brief tugs on the collar, along with a mild "no" to correct behavior. But there is none of the punishment of the total old-school methods. Although it offers suggestions on the use of food rewards, there is more reliance on rewards of affection. These monks mostly raise German Shepards, I suspect if the system works with them it will suffice for other breeds. The first third of the book describes the life of the puppy until you would pick him up at eight weeks. Initially I had wanted to get on with what to do when I first brought a pup home. But this section turned out to be very informative, offering a background on developmental stages that really helps understand where your puppy "is coming from". The section on formal training is outstanding in its clarity. Other books I've read feel like I'll need them at my side as I execute the methods. With this book, it all made perfect methodogical sense in a sequential, memorable order. I've now read 10 training books. I will be using the more modern rewards/marking techniques offered in other books. But I still give this 5 stars, the insight into canine development alone makes it a rewarding read. I don't discount the methods, perhaps if I were getting a Rotweiler or GSD I'd pay these methods more heed. ... show more

  • Great Book for a beginner
Format: Hardcover
This is a wonderful book. I came across this book after I had purchased my German Shepherd puppy a year ago. My brother is expecting his first German Shepherd puppy in April so I bought him this book as a gift to read before the puppy arrives. I wish I had known about it prior to purchasing my puppy! This book really gives you a different perspective on raising a puppy. I believe that it calms down that uncontrolled enthusiasm that most first time puppy owners have. Everyone wants the perfect dog, we all want to be the envy of all other dog owners because our dog is the most well behaved and best trained. So sometimes we go into the whole puppy ownership thing with unrealistic expectations. Eventually the enthusiasm to create a wonder dog is squashed and is replaced with frustration, anger and the desire to get rid of the puppy! This book really tells you what you can expect for each stage of your puppies life, so that you are not trying to force training beyond your puppies comprehension level. I am expecting another German Shepherd puppy at the end of Feb. and I will be reading this book again in preparation for her homecoming! Believe me, the training experiences that I have had over the last year have been very rewarding. I love the Monks of New Skete books! They make training feel like more of a natural progression in your dogs life rather than a forced response. I feel that I should also mention that the German Shepherd I purchased was sold to me at 5 weeks of age and due to the early separation from the litter, we have had to deal with a lot of issues. But with patience and attention and the help of this and other Monks of New Skete books, my girl is a healthy well balanced and very well trained companion. I know that at least three of her littermates were euthanized due to issues that the owners did not know how to deal with because of the early separation. It makes me sad to know that just the first few chapters may have helped them too. ... show more

  • Best book for training puppies - hands down
Format: Hardcover
I adore this book. I bought it 16 years ago to train my maltipoo and I just bought another copy because I just got an 11 week old Cavapoo. This book is so informative telling of all the various stages of a puppy life and what’s important to know for each stage during training. It is so well written and I’ve learned so much from it both times. Anyone who has a puppy should get this book! ... show more
