  • Decent for the price!
Coming in hot...the build quality is a little on the cheap side, I think you could on "drop test" it a few times before it would start to fall apart. That being said, for the price it is a decent item to have on hand. I used it today for the purpose that I bought it, to identify unused patches in a fully populated patch panel, without disrupting user traffic. Worked like a charm. As another reviewer mentioned, it did have some issues reading a patch cable that had a thicker outer sheath than most, but I just popped around to the back of the panel and tested there. I am giving it 5 stars as it is a good value for the price. Even with the build quality issues, it is still a good value and it is for my exclusive use not for loaning it out to other technicians. ... show more

  • Decent but finicky
This does what its supposed to do...but you have to place the fiber *juuuust right* into it to get it to detect. So far I've only tested on older 850nm Multi-mode fiber, trying to trace out dead cables to see if I can decom them. I do find the extra features (optical tracer and flashlight) to be nice bonus add-ons. All in all, not perfect, but good enough. ... show more

  • Low cost tester with multiple functions, questionable usefulness
This is a relatively inexpensive tester that can perform multiple functions. However, I feel that a professional technician working with fiber optics might benefit from a more professional grade product, while the usefulness for a home user interesting but questionable. Build quality: This meter is quite large, if you're working in a crampted environment, that might be a hinderance. It is very long, and I feel that it doesn't need to be nearly this large. It is very lightweight, and feels almost empty. The LCD does not have very good viewing angles and it is green backlit with black numbers. Trying to maneuver this long tester in a crampt space to get the right viewing angle to see the display is cumbersome. Functionality: By holding one strand of a fiber optic cable (not both strands of a double cable) in the slot and pulling the trigger, you can see the estimated power (note: the manual specifically states it is not calibrated and should not be trusted, so what good is it for other than just a ballpark) and the light wavelength (you probably already know what wavelengths you are using). With the 3rd function, you can connect a cable to the bottom, and a red visible laser shines into the cable so you can look for the red light output at the other end. This is probably the most useful feature, if you're working with a lot of fiber optic cables and need to identify a specific cable. This is a bit like toning out an analog cable. Other: The manual (which you have to get online, it's not included) is minimal, and the case does protect the meter b ut it is flimsy. Requires 2 AA batteries not included. PROS: Can tell you the wavelength of the light traveling the cable, and the direction. This is like magic. Shows the power of the light, although it is not professionally calibrated so it's just a ballpark Can inject visible red light into a cable to search out the corresponding cable on the other end Cost is low compared to a professional tester CONS: Large in size LCD hard to read at all angles Does not have a "HOLD" function to keep the reading on the LCD when you remove the cable Case is flimsy Manual is poor Must put a single fiber cable into the slot, not a double cable as most are; need to split cable apart I'm not sure what the market for this tester is. It's not good enough for professional fiber techs, and I'm not sure why a home user would even need it. I feel the most useful feature is the injection of red light into one end of a fiber to find that same cable on the other end, or to identify a break. ... show more

  • Reliable Fiber ID Tool That Doesn’t Miss a Beat
I grabbed the TFI-40V Fiber Optic Identifier for a few network maintenance gigs, and it’s quickly become a go-to in my toolkit. Needed something dependable for spotting live fibers without yanking connections—and this thing nails it. It covers a wide 800–1700nm range and reads signals like a pro. The built-in VFL at 10mW is bright enough to trace breaks or bends even in daylight, which saved my tail more than once. It’s rugged enough to toss in a bag, and simple to use even with gloves on. If I had to nitpick, the LED indicator could be a tad more intuitive, especially for newbies. But if you know your way around fiber, it’s a no-brainer. Rating: 4.7 out of 5. Would I recommend to a friend? In a heartbeat—especially techs who need quick, accurate reads. ... show more

  • Doesn't Work As Advertised
This device did not work as advertised. Says that it works with patch cables, but it could not pickup the reading through the jacketing. Will only work on bare fibers if at all. When I try on a patch cable, it just says Low dBm

  • Works as described.
This is a handy gadget for my little bag of tricks. Seems to work as described. Has a bit of a cheap feel but as long as it does what it is supposed to, I am okay with that. Overall pleased with this find.

  • Functional Fiber Identifier but Feels a Bit Cheap
The fiber identifier does its job well—it can detect signal direction and frequency without needing to change fixtures, which is convenient. It also supports both single mode and multi mode fibers. That said, the build quality leaves something to be desired. It feels a bit cheap in the hand, especially compared to other testers I’ve used. Still, it works as advertised and is a decent budget-friendly option if you need a basic tool for occasional use. ... show more

  • Accurate and Reliable for Live Fiber Detection
The TFI-40V is a solid tool if you're working with live fiber lines. I’ve used it on both single-mode and multi-mode fiber, and it accurately identifies the presence and direction of signals without disrupting service. The detection range (800nm to 1700nm) covers everything I need, and the built-in VFL (visual fault locator) is surprisingly powerful for a 10mW LED it’s great for spotting breaks and bad splices. ... show more
