  • Don't waste your money!
Size: 4 Inch
I purchased this X/Y vice for probably the same reason everyone purchases it. After waiting nearly 2 weeks for it to finally arrive, delaying the job I needed it for, I received the package which was heavily beat up and torn down the side. Nonetheless, I saw styrofoam so I figured the vice was protected. I was wrong. When I opened the package, the foam was really just there to keep the top half from moving. None of the rest was secure at all. My first true annoyance was seeing the plastic handles. If you studied the product pictures like I did, you probably notice they're metal... Not the case. These are brittle plastic and one was already broken when I removed it from the box. As I really needed to get this job done, continued on and attempted to affix the vice to my milling table. None of the notches along the bottom would aline so I made a bracket and fixed the vice to it, then the bracket to the table. Then I noticed the real problem. This vice is configured wrong. The crank handle for the vice jaws is on the back side, with the jaws running along the x axis. The control for the Y axis is on the front side. X axis is on the left side. This means, to have the jaws open the way they need to, the way every other vice I've ever seen opens, the crank handle it already into the back side of whatever you have it mounted to. It's completely unusable on a table. Now, mounted to an open bench, it may work fine, but not for anyone needing to drill or mill or use the X/Y axis for what it's meant for. Moreover, the span of which this thing can move is heavily offset. Just to get your jaws under a drill head, you're 75% out of throw on the y axis and 100% on the x axis. It's a high likelihood I'll be returning this paperweight and getting something better. ... show more

  • Better than I thought, also bigger!!
Size: 4 Inch
It is solid! The adjustments allow for a near perfect slide. I suggest taking the slides apart, cleaning them & re-lubricating. The last thing, it’s bigger than I thought. Takes up my whole drilling platform. I wish the vice went with the upper slide, instead of across.

  • 2 axis vise
Size: 4 Inch
The price is pretty good, the vice had play in the slides, I tried to adjust the slop in the vice and it just made it bind up, the collars with set screws kept loosening, so I ended up putting lock tight on the set screws, my opinion is I was really hopeful when I purchased it, with the few issues I have with it binding up and with how it's got play in the worm threads I'm probably going to find a better quality vise because I feel I can't be precise with this one. ... show more

  • I tried to like it
Size: 4 Inch
I wanted a short XY vise that would fit under my 10" drill press and the Texalan seemed to fit the bill and was reasonably priced. Once I opened the box I kind of suspected that this was a mistake. It was poorly packed and the handles were still loose even with the set screw tightened fully. In operation the movement was extremely rough and the resistance would change as the slide moved from one end to the other. I tried cleaning it up and sanding the surfaces, but everything is so unfinished that it would take a major do-over. Additionally, it relies on a weak system of 3 set screws to apply pressure on the slide, where the middle screw has a small ball bearing at the end to support movement. If the pressure is too tight, or not evenly appliied then it's hard to move, loosen the screws, and there is too much play in the vise. I also suspect that the screws loosen on their own with use. As I noted in the title, I tried to make it work, but realized that it was a losing battle and sent it back. ... show more

  • Amazing for price
Size: 4 Inch
This is not a top of the line cross slide vise. But for $80, it works amazing. If you just need a good vise for your drill press, and being able to adjust workpiece. Again, not a Wilton but for $80 amazing. Hardly any backlash, held stock in place drilling no issues. Very heavy, well built.
