  • Near perfect.
Format: Paperback
I purchased this book when I began playing tenor guitar in CGDA tuning. It's darn near perfect for what I need. This reference source very likely contains 95% of all the chords you or I will ever need to play. For any chord, or chord inversion, not shown in this book, do a Google search for The Italian Banjo Guild to download their PDF of all possible CGDA chords and their alternatives. I doubt you will actually need the PDF and this book is far more convenient to stick in a case or a gig bag. You can easily find the most common, and a few obscure chords, in this book with numerous alternatives, inversions and extensions. Major chord shapes are shown in multiple positions on the fretboard up to the 12th fret. Need a shape for a Bb7(sus4) chord? There's only one shape provided here but you can probably figure out the E, F and G form can be moved up the neck if you so desire. (The Italian Guild reference provides seven possible placements.) I gave this book a "4" due to a few issues I think could easily be corrected. Movable and common barre chord shapes are not clearly notated as such. IMO this simple inclusion would make the book far more useful to the player new to CGDA tuning. Chords are listed in one key only so identical shapes used in other keys are not shown as alternatives in, say C and Am. The opening pages include simple I-IV-V progressions in each key which likely is unnecessary for most players. and could easily be substituted by the next omission. There are no pages with blank fretboard diagrams for player notes and typical "useful" cheater chords, though there is room for creating your own. I would have liked to see each group of chords made easier to locate by a small tab printed on the pages' vertical ends - another preference I can diy though I would have preferred to have this done for me. Small gripes for a small book filled with a large amount of useful information. Save some money and buy this easily recommended chord book unless you can see really needing seven different shapes for a Bb7(sus4) chord. ... show more

  • Where's the chord?
Format: Paperback
It included a number of common chords but not all chords. I never got the hang of how they were organized but there were so few chords listed it was easy to thumb through the pages until I found the one I wanted to use. It was not a good purchase for me.
