  • Unmatched quality
Yeah. I know what you're thinking. Its $300. Thats a lot of money for a coffee maker, yeah? Well, after buying three Brauns, a Ninja Brew Center, two Cuisinart and some company I cant remember, all under $100... well, you get what you pay for. I guess under $100 isnt a good spot for quality coffee makers. None of the above lasted more than two years. The Moccamaster is built solid. Simple, no odd folded plastic "hinges" that split (Braun). No oddly crafted reservoirs that leak (Ninja). No anemic water pump that leaves half the grounds dry (Braun and Cuisinart). No lukewarm temperature on one brew, and boiling the next (Cuisinart). No hot plate that loses its odd coating and rusts within 6 months of purchase (Braun and Cuisinart). The engineering on this machine is simple and effective. Its easy to take apart and clean. Metal construction, and a VERY good vacuum seal stainless steel carafe. After brewing, change the pot lid for the vacuum seal and it keeps a pot drinking temperature for several hours without a hot plate. The manual brew stop has three settings, full drip, half drip and off, that helps control the brew strength, and it works great! It takes very little time to brew a pot, and the flavor matches any pour over I've tried. Because everything is modular and can be disassembled by hand cleaning it's a breeze. I cant recommend this machine enough!! You wont regret buying the Moccamaster! UPDATE, THREE MONTHS LATER: Still in love with this machine. More so now, really. I over tightened the vacuum seal lid on the carafe, and had to really work to loosen it, and it snapped. My fault, I wasnt paying attention when I tightened it, and as it sits it builds pressure in the carafe (elementary science). Best to not over tighten! Anyway, I checked the Technivorm site on Amazon and they had a replacement lid for $19, and shipped to me within 48 hours. The website has replacement parts for everything, so if something does go south out of warranty, you can replace it cheap and fast, and not have to buy a new machine. This is how a coffee maker should be made. I love you guys! ... show more

  • Great cup of joe!
I've waited a couple months to write a review just to make sure I had a good feel of this machine. So, it really does make a great cup of coffee! There is a learning curve to it as you need to grind your own beans. You can't just put in your regular ground coffee as it's just not made for that. So I guess the hardest part to get down is leaning what grind setting you like the best to get the taste you want. That takes experimenting. We made some early batches that had us scratching our heads and wondering why we changed machines. We kept trying (not lots but several batches). We were new to conical grinders too so it was different all around. I settled on a Shardor conical grinder (of course I have to say Mordor to myself every time I see the name) and set to a 36 grind (pretty dang coarse) with a dark roast Pete's coffee. That makes one heck of a cup of coffee!! Best we've ever had in fact. But it took some experimenting to get it there. I would have like to have tried the Moccamaster branded grinder but I couldn't spend that kind of cash! Pros: a) Best cup of coffee we've ever made at home (after learning how). That was the promise and our goal so I'd say fulfilled. Everything else is fluff. b) The carafe is amazing. That glass lined thing works really well (mostly, see cons). Coffee comes out hot and stays hot a good while. Cleans like a dream (hardly needs more than a rinse as nothing sticks). c) Nice compact design (compared to some machines we've had). Very minimalistic as there's just on or off. Cons: (none of these change the fact that it makes a great cup of coffee) a) Expensive!! And, what you see for that expense isn't very confidence boosting. I assume the innards are what makes the machine as I've never seen anything heat up as fast as this thing does. But, the parts don't feel or seem expensive. b) The carafe has about the worst pouring spout I've ever seen. Especially in such an expensive maker. It works but you'll be excited when you can pour a cup without making somewhat of a mess. You either have to pour so slow you can't stand it or you make a mess. Seems to be the only two options. Bottom line is a great cup of coffee, the fasted heating element known to man and a nice hot brew. We are both happy with this purchase. ... show more

  • Fantastic, well-made coffee maker
Purchased this coffeemaker (KBT) a little over 7 months ago, as my previous maker had broke and I was looking for a well-made, hopefully long lasting coffee maker. I've been using this daily since, and it's by far the greatest coffee maker I've ever used. It's a very simple machine, but it makes very hot and flavorful coffee, very quickly. I don't know if it's the heat of the water or what, but the taste of the coffee is noticeably better from this machine than your average maker, even when using the same exact beans/grind. I was hesitant paying $300+ for a coffee maker, but for something that is used daily and will hopefully last 10-20+ years or more, I think it's well worth the price. I had a small issue after a few months of use where the metal spout appeared to be browning around the edge of the inlet. I emailed Technivorm about the issue, and they said it could just be from my tap water but also sent a replacement without hesitation. I've been using the replacement without seeing that issue again. Again, I highly recommend this maker if you're a daily coffee drinker looking for a BIFL/well-made product. I'll update after a few years of use if anything changes. ... show more

  • Good coffee but the filter basket overflows 20-30% of the time
Seems like a poorly designed filter basket. The way the filter basket meets the drip hole, filters can block the hole or small amounts of coffee can block the hole, causing the entire filter basket to overflow. This happens unexpectedly even when using the proper grind size and weight, when folding the filter away from the drip hole, and when making sure coffee is in the filter before brewing. I expected more from a company as well regarded as Technivorm, now I'm on the hunt for a coffee pot that doesn't spill every 5th time I use it, wasting my coffee beans. ... show more
