  • Fantastic Tablet at a Great Price
Color: Space Blue
After going through a bunch of cheap tablets, I came across this gorgeous TCL tablet. It has a huge 12.2" inch screen, which is crisp and colorful. This tablet is also pretty speedy when multi-tasking and have not run into any crashes or freezing. Pretty much does whatever I throw at it. I added a 256 gb SD card for that little extra storage. If you're looking for a mid-range tablet, then this is the one for you. 5 out of 5, final answer. ... show more

  • A Good, Solid Tablet & Good Value
Color: Onyx Black
I've used a lot of tablets over the years, both androids and Ipads. The super glossy screens were always prone to glare and fingerprints. The matte screen on the TCL is different. It is much less prone to glare, and doesn't show fingerprints. I primarily use my tablets for studying, though I did try a game or two on the TCL. They ran well. Sound is loud, but quality is just OK. The screen is very easy to read, which very important to me. I like that this tablet came with a good case and stylus. It's frequently difficult to find cases for less common tablets. The way the stylus magnetically attaches to the side of the tablet is clever. Battery life is good. The overall take on android is pleasant, without a bunch of extra junk. If you're looking for a tablet for reading and studying, this is a good choice. ... show more

  • Great value
Color: Onyx Black
Was a little nervous about the tablet given the price point. Before buying, Gemini suggested a more expensive tablet and faster tablet. I'm happy I stuck with this. The chipset is definitely powerful enough for what I use it for. It runs the full Microsoft and Google suite of apps no problem. No problems doing splitscreen or multi tasking. Easily can pan through large PDFs. Probably a little slower and choppier than the high end tablets but definitely not enough to bother me, especially sub $250. Makes a great digital notepad. I use it next to my desktop as an additional screen and run all my docs off of the cloud. YouTube/video runs smooth. Great screen for reading. Definitely could replace a Kindle. Camera is good enough for video calls. The cameras on pretty much any phone today will be better though Speakers are serviceable. Talk to text works great. Has a nice suite of built in AI features. Happy I got the case. It makes a good stand ... show more

  • Great value tablet with a lot of features, but sadly no SD card slot
Color: Onyx Black
I purchased this tablet with my own $ and have used it for about a month. Let me start off by stating that I really like this tablet and I think it's a good value. However it could have been an AWESOME tablet if TCL had given it some TLC. Why did I buy it? My initial purchase was to compare this for reading vs a kindle. I found the NXTPaper tech to be helpful for reading (which I do exclusively indoors) and found myself using it much more often than the Kindle, especially since I "own" books on google and borrow on Libby from the library. While this all could technically be done on the Kindle, it would have required additional time and effort. I also prefer the 11.5" screen because I can use larger text and still not flip pages as often. Finally, it being Android opens up a ton of other use-cases. What I do not like: So let's get the bad stuff out of the way. First, why o why did they get rid of the SD card slot, which is surprisingly offered on the lower "Gen 2" model but not this one? It limits the usefulness of the device. Some use cases that I would have appreciated in addition to what I already use it for, thereby increasing its value, include: 1. loading it up with movies and music for long travel 2. loading it up with offline maps for navigation, 3. being able to offload my camera videos and photos I take on trips, 4. being able to quickly copy files on and off the tablet, 5. being able to back up critical files locally This tablet has exactly half the storage and RAM vs my daily use phone and there's no way to expand it, thereby reducing it's usable life. Ultimately I did chose the "Plus" version over the "Gen 2", due to: • better screen resolution • better processor • because I still want 256GB of "base" storage, as programs typically cannot be loaded onto the SD card Aside from the update that got pushed to it when I set it up, TCL has not pushed any other updates as far as I'm aware of, security or otherwise. The tablet came with Android 15 and who knows when, or if, it will ever receive any updates. Automatic screen brightness does not work well. The light sensor is located where my hand often occludes it when I scroll through web pages, making the screen transition brightness level wildly. Also, no matter how many times I try to add a little brightness offset it likes to default to minimum. I get around this by either rotating the tablet 180 degrees (which puts the pen on the right side, but is otherwise an OK work-around,) or I turn off auto brightness. Auto screen orientation works quickly so it's not a big deal I guess. Finally, there's a nice illuminated button to change screen modes and to let you know when a new notification appears, but I find the NXTPAPER transition effect takes too long. I wish there was option to turn the effect off so it just switches modes instantaneously… there are only 3 screen modes, and it's pretty obvious which mode you're in, so all the drama is rather pointless. What a like: Build Quality: Awesome; the device feels solid. The trade off is that it is heavy…. with pen and case the whole bit of kit comes in at 748g (1.645lbs), so you probably won't be holding it in your hands for too long. I have no issue with the weight as I usually have it free-standing (via the case) or propped up on something during use. Screen: The color paper and B&W modes definitely help reduce my eye strain compared to a non NXTPAPER display. The colors are vibrant and there's zero light leakage; it looks almost like an OLED screen to me. It gets sufficiently bright for indoor use; I have not tried using it outdoors. I also really like the matte texture of the screen, both for touch input and writing. It seems like it's robust enough not to warrant any "screen protector", which I think would detract from the feel. Performance: For the money, the Mediatek G100 processor copes fine. I do keep the tablet in performance mode, but have not benchmarked it so I cannot quantify the mode's impact. It has not crashed or hung at all during the past month. Scrolling through web-pages could at times be smoother. but that's not unexpected at this price point. YouTube plays fine. The OS does a good job killing background tasks that aren't needed and makes the 8GB of RAM work. I do not agree that the (+8GB) of slower shared storage should count as "RAM". I would have preferred 12GB of real RAM. Pen: Admittedly I can swipe-type faster than I can chicken-scratch with any pen, but I use it moderately for screen navigation, mark ups, and highlighting. You can use the pen pretty much whenever but the thing is that you need to start entering the text in an entry field, which can be rather small, after which point you can write anywhere. The problem is that once you pause writing, the ability to write anywhere goes away. If TCL could extend this timeout, it would make filling out forms easier - they should just make the timeout user settable. This only comes into play for field entry; taking notes in a note app it's a non-issue. The pen comes with one spare tip and a tool to perform the replacement. I think the battery should last a long time as I haven't charged it yet, but like I stated earlier, I'm not a heavy pen user. The pen attaches to the tablet via magnet, and it's reasonably secure when used with the case. I would not trust that retention solution without the case. Case: It's a little flimsy and prone to smudges (see photos) but I would still recommend it since no better 3rd party options exist and it's still a better value to get the bundle than the tablet only, IMO. Speakers: No complaints, they sound great for their size Battery run-time: No complaints. It lasts about a week between charges in my use case. The battery charges quickly via USB-c when paired with a good charger. I typically limit the charge to 80% to extend battery life and still don't fine the charging frequency to be a hassle. Camera: Your cell phone is better, but it's sufficient in a pinch and to scan documents. I noticed that the white balance on the main camera can be really off when taking photos. I haven't checked to see if it's a setting in the native camera app. Bonus features External Monitor: Has built-in mode where it can be used as an external wireless 1080p monitor. I find it handy but I wish you could use the tablet's native resolution instead. Here's hoping that TCL may "fix" that in the future. GPS: It's not mentioned anywhere bit the tablet has GPS, which was unexpected but pretty cool as it can be used for navigation Radio: There's a radio app, which states it will only work if you have wired headphones attached, I assume through a USB-to-audio port adapter, as there's no audio jack on the tablet itself. I have not tested this and find it kind of pointless since you can stream everything these days Summary: Great tablet for the price with a few unfortunate misses. If it's in your budget I would definitely recommend getting the bundle with case and pen. I would purchase it again if the one I had got damaged or lost; that's the litmus test in my book. ... show more

  • Bright, vivid, lightweight and runs smoothly
Color: Space Blue
The screen on this tablet looks bright and colorful, and the touch response feels smooth when I’m scrolling or switching apps. The UI interface is user friendly that I didn’t need much time to get used to it. I’ve been using it for online classes and watching videos, and YouTube plays in high resolution without any lag, and it is a lightweight to carry around. After a month of daily use, everything still runs steadily. Great value with it. The only thing I wish were better is the storage, so I could capture more photos and videos, and save some downloads easily. It also doesn’t come with a case or a stand, and I haven’t found any that fit properly from the market, thus it is a bit inconvenient to carry around. Aside from those two points, it’s been a comfortable device for studying and entertainment. ... show more

Color: Onyx Black
If you want this only for reading, this might be a solid option. It certainly seems it for the price and included accessories. A tablet at this price with a case (even if it's a fairly standard, cheap one that other tablet models have floating around for sub-$20) and a stylus seems like a steal. But, if you want to use this for writing or drawing (you know, two of the three things this tablet is really advertised doing well), that stylus is the big problem that brings down the whole package, frankly. The T Pen is very low quality and performs terribly, offering no real tilt use for shading, having a fair bit of lag to it, and hitting the screen with harsh tapping sounds every time you use it. It stinks to use. The real kicker is that if you manage to put up with that and hit the point of needing a new nib for the T Pen, TCL does not have a solution for you. You either buy a whole new T Pen from them or you play roulette buying another brand of stylus and hoping it works. They simply do not sell nibs in North America, and, given how long the product has been on market, they simply don't plan on it. Save your money, spend it on a tablet from a company that has figured out the answer to "what does a customer do if they need a new pen nib?" ... show more
