Auger is tough and versatile. I used it to loosen dirt in bigger holes and then used it to mix cement for a deck footing. Big rocks and tree roots make it hard to hold the drill motor which makes sense because this is a 3" drill bit. The edge is not sharpened to cut tree roots but it does go through smaller roots. I think it says "commonly returned". People must have unrealistic expectations on what this should do. It can take a lot of power but IT IS A 3" DRILL. I used it with a 1/2" Ridgid cordless drill on low speed, it would get hot after a couple minutes. Good tool to have for random tasks as well as whatever they advertise it for... Planting flowers? ;)

This auger easily attached to my standard cordless drill. It’s very study and seems durable. Needed 2-3 tightenings of the chuck per hour of use. I had high hopes that planting tulip bulbs would be effortless with this thing. And it was, but only where the soil was free of grass roots and freshly tilled all the way down. In places with roots, this augur just swirled the roots around without punching through them. Despite the pointed tip, it’s just too wide to get through intertwined roots. I used a much thinner augur for some smaller bulbs and had fewer such issues, so definitely get the smallest diameter auger that will make the necessary sized hole. In spots with grass roots, I had to give up on this auger and use either a manual bulb planter, or the kind of plugger that you stand on like a pogo stick (highly recommend the latter!). This auger is a useful tool at times, but not a complete replacement for manual labor.

This makes planting bulbs much easier, but a longer version would eliminate bending over as much. I also recommend using a drill with a side handle for better two hand control.

This auger is meant for light soil . It is not meant for hard soil . The metal it is made out of is to thin and has already worn down.
