I did not buy thees for their intended use. I use center bits for starting a pilot hole in certain metals, where a regular twisted bit tends to bend a little when first started causing some inaccuracy problems, especially with thin sheet metal. Otherwise, these bits do my job for me.

These bits are small but very rigid. They put a pilot hole exactly where you need it and make centering the full drill bit much easier.

I drilled and tapped an aluminum bar on each end to make a gps motorcycle rack. Tapping for a 1/4 inch thread, I tried to match the center drill bit most near in OD as the tap drill bit OD. Used a drill press and a jury rigged jig to line the round bar and drill head up so everything was on center and drilled away with the center bit. Worked like a champ, made it a sure thing that my tap drill was centered and aligned properly when I then started drilling for the tap. Only one use of the center drill bit so far in soft aluminum, so not a clue how it will stand up to drilling into steel. ... show more
