Description

The 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III VC (Model B011) is a high-power zoom lens, developed by the megazoom pioneer Tamron, for use with the E-mount system of Sony’s series of compact interchangeable-lens cameras. Tamron has integrated 19 years of megazoom development technologies into this product. The result of this development is a lens that is compact and lightweight, featuring a 62mm filter diameter and weighing only 460g.Its compact specifications and the superlative image quality that it delivers allows users to easily enjoy shooting across the whole range - from wide-angle to full telephoto - with just one lens. The attractive metallic design of the lens is ideally suited to Sony´s mirrorless camera line-up. The lens is available in silver and in black. The AF drive has a stepping motor that is optimal for the Contrast- detection AF system employed by Sony´s mirrorless series of cameras. The system also enables improved AF performance when shooting video. In addition, ease of operation is enhanced with the Direct Manual Focus (DMF) function, which allows the user to make fine manual adjustments in the AF focus. The lens covers an impressive focal length range of 18-200mm. The corresponding full frame angle of view equivalent is 27mm wide-angle up to 300mm full telephoto. This range coverage allows the user to capture wide-angle shots of expansive landscapes and powerful telephoto images that enlarge the details of distant subjects—all with one lens. In addition, by setting the lens at the telephoto end (200mm) and moving in to the minimum focus distance of 0.5m, flower petals, jewelry and other small objects can be shot as expanded close- ups. Equipped with Tamron’s acclaimed VC (Vibration Compensation), and thanks to its lightweight and compact size, this lens allows easy handheld shooting of sharp images with no camera shake over a wide range of settings, from everyday snapshots to memorable travel scenes.About the stepping motorThe B011’s autofocus mechanism uses a stepping motor that is an ideal match for the Contrast-detection AF system used in Sony’s mirrorless series of cameras. The stepping motor’s actuator allows finely tuned control of angular rotation, and since it drives the focusing mechanism directly without an intermediate reduction gear, it also provides superbly quiet performance.VC (Vibration Compensation)Tamron’s VC mechanism employs a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance that eliminates the blur from handheld shots for cleaner, crisper shots.About the new VC mechanism (moving coil system)Tamron’s conventional VC (Vibration Compensation) unit has a moving magnet system with heavy magnets in the vibration-compensating lens. However, the new VC mechanism adopts a lightweight moving coil system that reduces the load on the drive system. This allows the drive to be operated with smaller coils and magnets, reducing the weight and size for the entire VC unit. In addition, improvements to software and other elements of the VC mechanism used in the 18-200mm Di III VC have made the mechanism even quieter.

  • Extraordinary lens
Color: Black
From my uses this lens is as good as the kit zoom, but with an 11.1 zoom ratio versus the kit's 3.1. I use it on an NEX-6 and is seems to focus more reliably than the Sony. IOW, I've had trouble with the Sony failing to focus, whereas while the Tamron 18-200 might take a small moment longer, it is more reliable. There is a zoom lock that prevents the lens from extending (zooming out) while hanging downward on your neck strap. Since there is such a large mechanical disadvantage when zooming --- a small rotation of the ring produces a large extension/retraction of the tube -- it's a good idea to point the lens downward when you zoom out. Conversely, point it upward when zooming in. This becomes a habit after a while and may reduce wear on the internal machinery . This is shipped from Japan and arrives faster that the "boilerplate" shipping times indicated for all non-US vendors. The faster shipping costs only a few dollars more and took only about 4-5 days. ... show more

  • Convenient, but...
Color: Black
Purchased this to replace the two stock lens for my A6000. Much easier to carry around and the nice thing of not having to replace one lens with the other also avoids the chance of dust getting onto the sensor (which had created annoying dark spots which I didn't notice until after trips.) Zoom range is comparable to the stock lens. Speed is a bit slower but acceptable. One thing buyer be aware is that avoid shooting buildings or any square/rectangle objects at its maximum angle, especially do not try to fill the frame - you *will* see annoying barrel effect. If you just use the center portion of the frame, or zoom in a bit, then the barrel effect become negligible. So obviously there's a trade-off between convenience and picture quality. For me, it's more important not to carry multiple lenses. When you know what it's good for and what's not, you can probably make good use of this lens. ... show more

  • Great Buy for the Sony NEX-5r
Color: Black
The quality of the pictures are the same as the Sony lenses. Reason for the 5 stars is that you can carry a single lens to cover the 18-200mm range. Decently weighted to give you a solid feel. Unlike Sony lenses, when zooming the lend had a very rough feel to it. Could be a con for dinner people. Compared to the Sony kit lens (18-50 mm), when switching on the camera, the camera takes a slightly longer time to start up. Don't know if its a software issue with the tamron lens or just a hardware issue of the lens. Sometimes when completely zoomed out (close to the 200mm) end the camera just refuses to focus on the object that is zoomed into. This is when the camera is in the "Intelligent Shooting Mode". These are my observations so far. Even if some of my observations are cons I would still but and use this lens as it is an awesome convenient product to use and costs much less than Sony's own 18-200mm lens. ... show more

  • Excellent lens.
Color: Black
After owning almost every Sony lens, I was hesitant to buy this Tamron, I'm glad I did, it is way better than the Sony 18-200, smaller, lighter, better color and picture quality and better price too. I have been complicating my life changing lenses on the go, not anymore.

  • Great all around lens!
Color: Black
Really like this lens. Takes care of what two lenses from Sony normally accomplish. Pretty much use this lens all the time. Only downside is weight, but that is the same issue for a lot of lenses like this.

  • Super Price for A Great Lens CAN NOT BE SERVICED
Color: Black
UPDATE Sep 2020. The lens died early this year. Tamron service was closed due to COVID. I got through today and learned that Tamron will not service this lens. I knew they would not do warranty work but thought they would do repairs. NO NO Now I have a paper weight. I received my lens two weeks ago. I have taken over 300 pictures with it. Other then it being a bit heavier then my 55-210 I would not go back to a two lens system. The pictures look as good as with regular lens and the telephoto. Sharp and clear. I have not noticed any problem with it focusing. Another reviewer mentioned the grinding sound/feel when it is extended and retracted. I found the same thing, but within just a few pictures it was gone. Now the zoom in and out is smooth, and takes little effort. There is an included lens shade that works very nicely. The no american warrenty is not a problem. In almost 50 years I can not remember having a lens that broke or stopped working and had to be returned or fixed. No complaints, nothing but praise. UPDATE I have now had the lens for about a month. I do not notice the weight at all, and it is a real joy not having to carry two lenses. The zoom feature is now very smooth. One thing I have not had to use is the lens lock since it has never self extended while being carried. I have now taken well over 500 pictures and most look very sharp and clear (the duds were my fault with camera settings). I have this mounted on a Sony Alpha A6000. The Sony camera and the Tamron lens is a perfect combination if you want a light weight DSLR with plenty of features and ease of use. I would give it 6 stars if I could. ... show more

  • Great performer on all fronts. Great performer on all fronts.
Color: Black
Drag 10 lbs of camera lenses halfway across the world and end up only using one of them. Swapping out lenses in a crowded open air market is not practical. On our recent cruise to Spain and Italy, I found that the 18-200mm reach of this lens allowed me closeups, scenic shots, architectural studies, and lots of low light museum photographs. I started the vacation swapping out appropriate lenses for the shots I was taking, but after a couple of days, this lens pretty much stayed on my camera the whole trip. It never really "pops" like some more restrictive lenses that are better at a few things, but through the whole 18-200mm you get good solid contrast, saturation and clarity. The pictures I've submitted with this review show the reach, light performance and saturation that I obtained on a cloudy day with a Sony A7 II. Highly recommended. ... show more
