Top Amazon Reviews

  • A really terrific lens that exceeded my expectations.
Style: Lens
As I get older, I grow weary of carrying the heavy camera bags with multiple lenses, so I thought I'd give this lens a whirl. I read a lot of reviews and, since I mostly have bought OEM lenses, was a little anxious about going with a third party lens. And, of course, all the reviews are pretty critical of lenses with an 18.8x zoom range, just in principal. And then there is the speed issue, with 6.3 on the long end, and Nikon does have an 18-300 (but at a considerably higher price). Nonetheless, I thought I'd give it a whirl, especially knowing of Amazon's thirty day return policy. Today I took it out for some extensive field testing and I was in awe. The weight and size is nice, but the wide angle, on the short end, and the reach, on the long end, are really nice to have without changing lenses. I took a variety of shots including some shallow depth of field shots and I was pleased with the color, the sharpness, and the bokeh. I was anxious to see what I would experience in terms of focusing speed and again, I was very pleased. I honestly couldn't get over it. I will be selling my Nikon 18-200, and also my Tamron 70-300. I guess if you specs and the reviews of professional pixel peepers are important to you, you might not be happy. But if you are looking for a single lenses to handle a high percentage of your needs without a lot of weight, bulk, and the need to change lenses all the time, this is a really great lens. Let me add a word about lens speed. My camera is a Nikon D7000, which has been recently discontinued as it has been out for several years. But in spite of it not being the latest and greatest, I find I can comfortably shoot at ISO speeds up to 8000 without having grainy pictures (assuming you expose correctly). That makes lens speed less of an issue. I will keep my Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 for special occasions, as will I keep my Nikon 50mm f/1.8. But this is my new walking around lens that will handle 95% of my shots and I couldn't be happier. ... show more

  • Excellent lens; wish I'd bought it sooner
Style: Lens
I'm pretty happy with this lens, although I haven't used it very much yet. My previous lens was the Nikon 18-200. I've been pretty happy with that lens, but frequently wished it had a longer reach. I also own the Nikon 70-300, but rarely use it because it's so big, bulky, and the short end is too long (can't use it for most close up work). I saw an ad for this lens in a magazine about a year ago, and seriously thought about buying it then. I read reviews that made me think it wasn't worth the money. So, I didn't buy it. Since then, I've been on 3 wonderful vacations, where I wished I had a longer lens. So, a few weeks ago, I caved and bought it. A few important notes: First, it's the exact same size as the 18-200, which is fine with me. 2nd, the picture quality is as good, if not better than the 18-200. So no sacrifice there at all. 3rd, I was really surprised how little difference there is between 200mm and 300mm. However, the farther away the subject is, the more noticable the difference. For example, inside a small room, it doesn't seem very different at all. But at a couple hundred yards, it's very noticable. 4th, the vibration control is EXCELLENT. I can easily hand hold and take pictures of hummingbirds 20' away, and the picture is super crisp. 5th, the feel of the lens is very similar to the Nikon 18-200. It's a little stiffer to zoom, but that's a good thing, since it's prevents the zoom creep the Nikon is well known for, and makes it easier to control zooming in and out. I love this lens so far, and am very glad I bought it. I have no problem recommending it to others. ... show more

  • Decent all-in-one lens
Style: Lens
I bought this as a refurb, but it's actually a gray market item, so no warranty here in the states. Also, they sent me a Canon version first. I had to wait a week to get what I ordered. On the plus side, they sent me a free CP to use with the Nikon version. So for the seller, I'd give them two stars. That said, this is a perfectly acceptable lens. Refurb or gray market, I was being cheap so I'm happy to have saved around $200 off the "real" version. There's some significant chromatic aberation at both of the extreme ends - 16 and 300 mm. However, I've been able to work around that in Lightroom. I bought this because I'm going on several trips, and I wanted to have an all-in-one, walking around lens that I didn't have to change. I certainly didn't expect tack sharp pix at all lengths and light levels So far, the pix are decent. I take a ton of "people shaking hands" shots for my day job, and it'll be adequate for that. If you're a traveler looking to take pix for social media display or for 4x6" prints, this is fine. If you're a fine art photog, or a photojournalist working for a major mag, you'll probably want to spend more money on a sharper, faster lens. ... show more
