  • An arcade dream come true
On its own is a very well built product with rotating screen for horizontal or vertical gaming goodness. Now the stock game selection is lacking, but theres actually a few bangers on here. However when this gets firmware flashed to load batocetra on sd card this build turns epic and totally worth it (requres additional sd card + usb to usb data transfer cable). Mame, ps1, nes, snes, pc engine etc. Its really cool. Can you emulate on pc yes, is it more fun in a dedicated form factor like this.... yes. This also could be a great gift for someone that has no clue bout emulation and just wants to play the classics. ... show more

  • Cadash, Bubble Bobble, great to play the original arcade titles!
Screen is easy to rotate anytime, looks good connected to TV with sidebar art, and I finally get to play Cadash which I pumped hundreds of yen into in Japan way back when - with all the characters! Kids are loving Bubble Bobble too. Happy with this purchase and build quality.

  • An excellent quality product that's held back by its price and game choices
First off, you can tell that they created this with a lot of care. It's a bit on the big side, but it looks and feels great, although it doesn't come with a plug and needs a specific type to operate well (USB-A 5V/2.4A). There's a switch on the bottom of the unit that allows you to switch between 4-way or 8-way controls. The game selection interface is rather simple but is still well done, and you can switch the orientation of the screen at any time. Each game also supports up to three save states, and you can change various settings for each game like lives and difficulty. You also get nice wallpapers when connecting it to an HD TV or monitor, and the game orientation can even be rotated if you have a vertical setup. Adding cards for each game that can be placed on top was a small but nice touch, and you get stickers too. There's also firmware updates available but you need a specific SD card to do it with (SDHC, limited to small cards like 32GB). Unfortunately, the speakers are far from the best. The deal breaker will probably be the game selection and/or the price. Now you certainly have some classics in the mix such as Bubble Bobble, Elevator Action and The Legend of Kage, hidden gems like Elevator Action Returns, and an unreleased version of Kaiser Knuckle, Dan-Ku-Ga, but otherwise it's a real hit or miss. Many of the older games from the 70s and 80s really show their age and aren't that memorable, which might have you asking if it's really worth the price. All of the games are based on their Japanese versions, and some games only have Japanese text. And if you want everything this has to offer, you're probably going to want to buy an extra gamepad and joystick controller, which are also rather pricey. Although you're able to add 10 extra games by purchasing the paddle/trackball pad, that's the most expensive controller of them all. Additional games have also been released as part of the Taito Memories lineup, two bundles currently with ten games each, but it seems they're exclusive to the Japanese market and cost ¥8,000 per bundle ($55). Despite its faults, the Egret Mini II is easy to recommend for die hard arcade enthusiasts with money to spend and love themselves some retro gaming history. Otherwise I'd suggest looking at videos of the game lineup and see if they're up your alley. If the price concerns you, know that the main unit tends to go on sale from $230 to $200 from time to time, but it went down to $170 on Black Friday and the extra controllers got a similar discount. It's also best to buy the unit in a bundle with one of the more expensive controllers, as it costs less than buying them individually. Personally, I bought this only because I wanted Elevator Action Returns that badly. While there's mild pixel stretching present, it's emulated almost perfectly without the issues found on the previous Legends console ports from the mid 2000s (the machine gun not working and the lights not going out). Sure, a port of the Saturn version was recently released for modern consoles and is nowhere as expensive, but I don't regret my purchase at all. It still has plenty of games that are a part of arcade gaming history. ... show more

  • Mini arcade done right
Perfect buttons, near perfect joystick, excellent game selection, and the rotating high resolution screen is just amazing. This thing really satisfied my arcade itch. It's far better than running an emulator on your phone or a dedicated handheld just because of the buttons and rotating screen alone.

  • Great build and feel
The build quality of this is really good, much better than I thought it would be. The option to switch from 4 to 8 way is a great touch for games that require it. If you buy this, remember to get a 2.4Amp adapter or it won't function properly. Amazon sells these in a two-pack for seven dollars. I wanted something nice to play Bubble Bobble on, and I got a lot more out of it. ... show more

  • A Fun, Retro All-in-One Gaming System Approved by My Teen
I bought the Taito Egret II Mini system for my 14-year-old son who loves video games and the classics like Space Invaders that I grew up with. Here is what he thought of the system: The console boots up super-fast after connecting to your computer or television. There are so many games to play with 40 total I spent awhile just testing things out. It was cool to play arcade games at home that I already knew--Space Invaders, Bubble Bobble and others--but I also had a good time with the fighter Kaizer Knuckle, Scramble and my personal favorite Cadash. I have never seen anything like the rotating screen on the Egret 2—it is a really unique feature that makes games like Rayforce look and play much better. The system runs nice and quiet, and the games run super smooth too with no glitches in the retro graphics or framerate. Sometimes the controls on these types of all-in-one systems can be a bit off, but on the Egret the buttons are tight and the joystick was responsive. Another bonus is the rapid fire control which really helped save my hand on the button masher games. The whole system is pretty light and compact but it doesn’t feel cheap at all. Honestly it feels really well made and seems like it will last. I would bring this to my friend’s house to mix up the usual stuff we play. I recommend the Egret II. ... show more
