  • Perfect desktop speakers with the right setup!
Color: Premium Black Ash
I was looking for some desktop speakers with a small form factor and these fit the bill for me as far as size, build quality and specs. These are meant to be used with a subwoofer. I think a lot of the bad reviews are from people trying to use them on there own. I was using def tech 800's before I got the primes. I liked them for what they are. Just not great for nearfield. The passive radiators in the 800's sound much better with a little distance. My research led me towards svs prime sats, polk s10's(I have the s15's in surrounds in my home theater and really like them) and q acoustics 3010i. The prime sats with a sub wins hands down. More clarity, accuracy and punch. They also seem to play different genres effortlessly. I couldn't find a weakness in any particular genre at all. I have these sitting on 9 inch stands, playing on my pc through an SMSL m300 mkii dac, connected to a minidsp hd to manage the crossover(100hz sounds best to me) between the prime sats and a def tech supercube 2000. The minidsp hd is then connected to an allo volt+ D amp. I don't think I could ask for anything more. These speakers need some help from other components like a good dac and amp to really shine. The minidsp hd made a big difference as well. You don't want these speakers to attempt playing full range. it will distort for sure. If you already have solid gear and just need great speakers for a piece of the puzzle, these are no-brainers. If you plan on building around these speakers for desktop use, be prepared to spend a decent amount of change on some quality components to get the most out of them. Either way you won't be sorry. Edit: I recently auditioned the Dali Spektor 1 and the PSB P3 speakers along side of these prime satellites. I still think the prime sats are great speakers. If you're using them as a desktop solution and have them toed in at your sweet spot, they're pretty hard to beat. Imaging is spot on where the vocals seem to be coming right out of the monitor, dead center. But compared to the Dali and PSB it has a much more narrow soundstage. Dali actually recommends that you don't toe them in as they're designed to have a wide dispersion. And they're not lying. No matter where I'm at in the room, they sound the same. They are also more forgiving with poor recordings than the prime sats. The PSB has a a wide soundstage as well but not as wide as the Dali. The tonality is where the PSB shine. I would say slightly better than the Dali. The mid bass and high mids sound amazing with the PSB. Its definitely the star of the show for these speakers. Every now and then they can be a little shouty but not fatiguing. In fact the prime sats are more shouty than these are. For now these 2 speakers trump the prime sats for me because I like the wide soundstage of the dali and the tonality of the PSB. I'm going to end up choosing 1 of these sets as my go-to desktop speakers. But I'm keeping my 5 star rating for the prime sats because for what they do, they do well(as long as you're in your sweet spot). Also the prime sats are a little smaller if desk room is an issue for you. Another good use would be for atmos speakers if the prime elevations are to pricey for your budget, as the sats are very directional. ... show more

  • Amazing speaker for small installations
Color: Premium Black Ash
What an amazing pair of small speakers. These were bought “used” on Amazon but listed as an open box. They arrived as exactly that. The factory box had been opened and retaped shut as the factory packaging was still intact. For a small speaker they are heavy. Note that the Canto SE4 stands are perfect on a desktop. Appearance wise, They are a dark ash finish with black grills. Registration of serial number with SVS was painless. I drive these with a JVC integrated amp and pair them with an SVS 3000 micro sub using the LFE port on the amp. I set the crossover in the amp to 80hz which seems to be the sweet spot. They were the perfect size for my desktop system sitting on either side of my computer monitor. For the needs I have, they are a great value for the money and the musical clarity is amazing. ... show more

  • Excellent choice for desktop audio system Excellent choice for desktop audio system
Color: Premium Black Ash
I purchased a pair of Prime satellite speakers for my desktop audio system, which includes a 10 inch subwoofer, a Rotel amp rated at 50 wpc, and an Emotiva DAC. Source material includes music videos (classical, jazz and classic rock) and streaming movies. I am very impressed by the design and the 'fit 'n' finish' of speaker; tapered (chamfered) edges and separate compartments for tweeter and mid/woofer are very uncommon at this price point (but those features are common among far pricier speakers). My speakers have the "black ash" finish; it's a vinyl wrap but is visually appealing. They're even finished on the back which again is more the exception rather than the rule for a box speaker at this price point. Most important, of course, is the sound -- and these speakers do not disappoint. With proper setup (primarily to ensure that the tweeters are at ear level and that the speakers are equidistant from the listener's ears and from each other), they produce very satisfying results. They are especially good at reproducing female vocals (my favorites include Alison Krauss, Sylvia McNair and Rebecca Pidgeon)-- again, if set up properly. My five star rating of the Prime satellite speakers is not intended to suggest that they're the best sounding speakers for a desktop audio system. If you're willing to spend more (a lot more), chances are you can find something that to your ears will sound even better. I'll add that I have other speakers-- in my home theater system and in my home audio system-- that are better speakers. (They also are MUCH larger and several times more expensive.) But for me, for this application (desktop audio), I don't know of another speaker that represents a better combination of value, design, construction and sound quality. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Perfect for managed expectations.
Color: Premium Black Ash
Absolutely solid if used as they are meant to be. A satellite. I use them for my rear surrounds on a 5.1 system and they work excellently. I've also got another pair as a 2.1 channel desk listening station and they work extremely well in that capacity. You do have to take considerations when purchasing these. They only dig down to 70hz so a subwoofer would be needed to round out the spectrum. They aren't big towers or even "bookshelf" class speakers. They are meant to produce good sound in a small area or a different zone in a hidden area. You aren't going to host a concert with these but if you want a small low powered speaker that sounds excellent without reference level volumes, this is perfect. ... show more

  • Strength is Neutrality, Weakness is Scale, Better options for the same price point.
Color: Premium Black Ash
The SVS Prime Satellite Speakers, if using as an upgrade to something like Logitech Computer Speakers, or those All-In-One cheap 5.1 systems from a box store by brands like Polk, Klipsch, Sony, Samsung, Vizio, or Yamaha, these speakers would definitely be an upgrade. However, compared to more "audiophile" brands, I would rate them as "meh". They don't sound bad by any means, and they are actually quite neutral, as advertised (I have no need to EQ out overtly boasted frequencies). However, as others have said they sound "thin". Honestly, any speaker this size needs a Subwoofer, so people expecting deep bass from these alone are mistaken. What I mean by thin is definitely small in scale, imaging, and sound stage. Several speakers in this size and price point offer a much more convincing sound stage. They do play exceptionally well in desktop near-field listening at 2 feet apart. The neutrality also allows them to sound fine and blend well as side/rear surrounds in a surround sound system, but they lack the holographic imaging to give a fully immersive experience. With some recordings the 500Hz mid-range can sound stressed, and like these speakers are huffing and puffing out of the rear ports, even at low volumes. Not the finest detail of tweeter, but they do handle a variety of genres, and mixes well. The neutral sound works pretty well for many genres of music, from jazz to aggressive metal. The total sound signature of these speakers actually sound very similar to B&W 686's, at a fraction of the price. I picked up this pair of SVS Prime Satellite Speakers, as well as a pair of PSB Alpha P3's. The PSB P3 is the all around winner for rear surrounds, and a full bodied desktop speaker, while noting that the PSB P3 does have a bloated mid-bass hump at 250Hz, that sounds better when reduced with a graphical EQ. The P3 is more fun, and immersive to listen to, from movies, jazz, classical, skate punk, hardcore, thrash metal, and death metal. Where the SVS would win is in neutrality. I wouldn't use either speaker as a Studio Monitor (look to Dynaudio for killer active monitors), but if I were in a pinch, the SVS would serve better due to its very flat, neutral sound. The PSB is fairly neutral, but does have enough coloration to only serve as a listening speaker, not an honest monitoring speaker. In conclusion, these are not bad speakers, but at this price point, I'd also suggest auditioning similarly sized and priced PSB, Dali, Monitor Audio, and B&W speakers, and making the decision according to your tastes. ... show more

  • Little Powerhouses!
Color: Premium Black Ash
I've only had my SVS Prime Satellites for a short period, but I couldn't be happier. I run them as surrounds with ELAC B5s for the front L/R and a PSA XV15 sub, all powered by a Denon X3200 AVR. The SVS satellites arrived in a seemingly bomb proof container, with a sturdy single box and some of the heaviest, tightest fitting Styrofoam cradles holding the tops and bottom of the speakers in place that I have ever seen......... Top notch, no doubt about it. The fit and finish is flawless. They must have been designed and assembled on Jupiter, because they shouldn't be as heavy as they are for their size. I chose to remove the grill and they look great without it, but they also looked good with it too. I installed them as my surrounds and they sound fantastic. I crossed them over at 100hz and they just seem to beg to be cranked up. During the lightning storm scene in War of the Worlds, they pounded out the lightning strikes at -7db and sounded 3 times bigger than they are. No distortion or compression at all. My X3200's Audyssey XT did a great job of matching them to my ELACs and multi channel music sounds great with them. I guess I expected them to be tiny sounding, but these little bulldogs fight way above their size......... There is a video on YT that shows what the tweeter, woofer, x-over and cabinet all look like, search on YT for "SVS prime inside and out vid 22". With the way these sound, I would have no hesitation using 5 of them with a good subwoofer in a small to medium sized room.......... They're that good. ... show more
