  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Product review update
OK...So my previous post about this product was based on the original log splitter I received from Sunjoe via Amazon. It wasn't working as advertised and I was greatly disappointed. I was able to return the item to Sunjoe via UPS (they even sent me a pre-paid Shipping label.) Customer service was very understanding and helpful. Upon receiving my replacement Sunjoe log splitter I was ready to rock! I had 2, 70 foot ash trees taken down and ready to split along with some maple and oak that also needed splitting. I have to say this machine is a BEAST! It is very powerful for it's size! Having previously owned a Homelite splitter that was the same size I like this one better. The controls are in a user friendly location and the speed is a small amount quicker. I have some limbs that are larger than 10 inches and to split these I cut a X on one end about 4 inches deep. This helps the splitter get a start and it just tears these larger pieces apart. At times I am truly amazed at the strength of this machine and it makes this chore a lot easier than using my 8 lb maul and wedge. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because of the wheels. They are made of plastic and tend to move to close to the housing thus rubbing , eventually cracking one of them. I didn't want to spend too much on a log splitter , and with this one the price was very good .I am very, very happy with it! I definitely recommend this machine for any home owner! Just an aside, we have been using firewood to heat our house for the last 40 years >My neighbor had loaned me his 20 ton gas operated splitter that was a pain to start and run and very loud and smelly. That was one of the reasons I went electric and with this splitter I'm glad I did! ( Bob , Nancys husband) ... show more

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars Works as Advertised
I received this product 2 months ago. 1st I will talk about packaging. Package arrived on time as promised. Box was smashed and looking VERY ROUGH. I didn't worry to much knowing it would have Styrofoam packaging around the product. When I opened the box sure enough it had Styrofoam around it but not enough for the drop it took somewhere from shelf to delivery. The black sheet metal that attaches to the frame and the wheels was dented and one wheel would not stay on when pulling it. No big thing to me though because I plan on pretty much keeping it in one location. I waited on the email from the company asking about the packaging but never received one, guess they knew. Haven't received an e-mail from the company to rate the product like most other companies that I order from on Amazon. 2nd.... My mistakes - Was excited about getting to splitting wood so out the box, hooked it up with extension cord big enough to handle 15 amps I bought in prep for this machine. Split two logs and it stopped as some other reviews have stated. I was levied. Was ready to pack it up and send it back but shipping would have been $100. Sit down and read the instructions and found out you MUST screw the wing nut on the front out to allow air in for the hydraulics. OK... Did that and noticed a sticker on the frame by the screw that states twist wing nut before use. Would have helped to notice if it was RED or YELLOW to bring your attention to it, it was black along with the other black frame parts on the splitter as you can see in the pictures. 3rd.... Splitting wood. Does exactly as advertised for me, actually a little better. I was able to split a 11" log 18" long. Logs with knots in them are hard on the machine. It was not able to split 10" logs with knots, I have a lot of oak and hickory on my land. Green pine also makes the machine work pretty hard. I had no problem with 8" and below logs. They machine would cut off or I should say freeze it the outside temp was much below 50º F. It states in the manual not to use the machine below this temperature so I would recommend getting you logs split in the fall or have it inside in a shed with a heater, which is what I plan on doing later on. Pros: 1. Price. Really can't beat it. A lot of 5T electric splitters are out there around the same price but for us that are looking for a splitter on a budget these will work. 2. Does as advertised on log size. 3. Cycle break will allow you to stop it from coming all the way back before splitting the next log which will speed up your work. If you are splitting shorter logs this will be a tremendous plus for you. Most of my logs are 16-18" and I could tell a difference just in the 2-4 inches. 4. I think it would be easily portable if it hadn't arrived damaged. Cons: 1. Will not work in temps below 48ºF outside, or at least mine will not. 2. Package arrived damaged and product was damaged. 3. Will need to chop some wood under 10" by axe because it just doesn't have enough power for knots and green pine. 4. Really close to the ground. Will have to sit down or bend over while operating this machine. Last and this is just my gut feeling. Not for sure if I trust the seller that I got mine from. I will find out later who it was and post but with the package arriving damaged and not receiving the e-mail asking about shipping seems suspicious to me. Maybe they don't send out e-mails asking which would turn me away from them next time. The product is fine but I will steer clear of the seller from now on. I DO RECOMMEND this product but please read the instructions before use and DO NOT expect it to do what a $1,000 machine will do. Update - WOW - just looked up the sender of this product. • 4.0 out of 5 stars SO GLAD I BOUGHT THIS!
There are a lot of very long and detailed reviews which everyone should read, but given that and my personality...I'll try and be more direct. I have done my share of wood splitting over the years with an axe, maul, wedges and recently a manual wood splitter. This electric one beats them all...easily! Once I got things set up...it took about 5 seconds before I heard a big CRACK and I had 2 excellent splits of wood. Why not 5 stars? Well....the electrical plug had a hard plastic cover around it so...you NEVER would be able to plug it into an outlet because the cover would prevent you from doing that. The cover was not "true" round (i.e. slightly deformed) and too tight of a circle so none of my extension cords would fit inside of it to plug it in. I had to use my grinder to grind down the cover AND a bit of the extension cord "nub" that was sticking out causing issues too. Once I could fit my extension cord to the splitter cord...I was golden but there was a whole lotta frustration up to that point. Perhaps this was a return and someone had modified the cord? I don't know but it was a painful experience to finally be able to plug my electrical machine into an outlet! The one thing that was really important that the other reviews saved me on...was the tip about opening the bleed screw before using the device. I never would have probably read that in the instructions and the warning label on the machine about that is impossible to read. The other thing I would warn about...is making sure you try and place your wood in the device as square as possible. I tried to "direct" it toward an existing crack in the wood but it spun out rather forcefully because the crack was not center and it flung out before digging the wedge in. I'm a happy wood splitter! ... show more
