  • Clean Boost / Comp in one
Solid pedal. Great clean boost and dynamic compressor range. Saves real estate on your board. I use this as an “always on pedal”

  • Great as expected. Simple, as not expected
I have 6 pedal compressors and the best of them are time wasters. Why? The controls are interactive. What interactive means, in practical terms, is that as you turn one knob up, you're also turning another knob down at the same time. Some of this is unavoidable, as with overdrives that have both gain and volume controls. But with a compressor, even experts will say "I feel it more than I hear it" so the last thing you need is to be on a knob turning treadmill with input/output, attack/release. For years, people were happy with Keeley 2-knob compressors, and the same basic unit but with a dry/wet mix is still for sale today. And that's essentially what the Compadre is. It's quieter and a little more "hi-fi" sounding than my Keeley units, but just as easy to use. The Compadre also adds a separate EQ-selectable boost, either clean or dirty. I thought this would be a prefect companion to compression but to my surprise I usually use the boost or the compressor separately. Both are great. I will still keep my wonderful 8-knob Empress compressor for when I absolutely must fine tune, and I also have a a DryBell Unit 67 which is literally a 1-knob compressor. But most of the time, the Compadre seems just right. You really have to try one; a YouTube video does not convey how a compressor will work for you. If you are a Strymon fan, you should be aware that this unit does not use a special power supply, has no hidden or supplemental features and each knob does only one thing. But all is not lost. The Compadre can be switched with MIDI and there are jacks for a favorite switch and a volume pedal. So you can make it a little more complex if you really want to. ... show more
