I did quite a lot of research on this light. It appears to be the least expensive quality light that will stand up to recoil. I have seen it used on many tactical pistols with thousands of rounds through them and listed on AR-15 forums as durable tactical lights, when I looked up this light compared to others. My personal experience: the key system and overall design of this light is outstanding. I have it on a Springfield XD 40 and use the Glock key. I can easily switch it out and use the 1911 key for my AR carbine or pistol-soon to be SBR. The toggle switch is pretty user friendly. I use a 2 hand grip on my pistol and do have to move my left hand slightly forward on my grip to toggle on with my left index finger. However the rocker is very smooth. You use the right side of the toggle switch with your index finger to toggle it on momentarily and then if you continue depressing it will switch to on continuous mode. Left toggle is ambi momentary/Right is push down partly to momentary and farther to keep on. I imagine if I had to use this while shooting in a "tactical situation" I would use my left hand index finger while clasping my right hand in a typical golf club like 2 handed grip. I would then periodically hit the light on momentarily to spill into a room on the floor and continue until I needed to engage at which point I would just keep the left finger in the down position and this would keep the light on while you are free to grip the gun with both hands. The rocker switch extends just past the finger guard to aid with this. Compared to my wifes Elzetta. I found it brighter (she doesn't have fresh batteries though) and it has a hot spot with much more spill than the Elzetta. Both a nice white light. For most situations I like the spill of this light much better as you really get a lot of peripheral illumination. This allows you to just point your weapon at the floor while checking on your kids for example. Inside a house there is no reason you ever have to raise your weapon until you have a target. I think the Elzetta would be better for an all purpose AR-15 SHTF gun because of the durability. But I would consider this for a nice weapon light on an AR 15 pistol. Regardless it is an outstanding light. I have not shot it yet but will get back if any problems with recoil from 357 sig/40 caliber. ... show more

This is my second Streamlight TLR-1 (the first being the non-C4 LED version). Everything you need is in the package (including batteries and hex key). Brightness is significantly increased with the LED version compared to the previous - but either is more than adequate for it's intended purpose: on a handgun, indoors, for commie-invasion-defense. This model is actually slightly smaller than other similarly priced products, but has the benefits of an aluminum casing, easy and secure attachment, and intuitive use of the on/off switch. The plastics or hybrid alternatives have many instances of breakage during use, so I would strongly recommend the TLR-1 for anyone interested in a pistol light. This would be adequate for a carbine light as well, but would not be my first choice in that application. I have had my first TLR-1 for... 3-4 years with no issues, this item has been to the range through 900+ rounds already and no signs of wear, tear or cracking. The additional weight on the end of the muzzle actually helps assist with muzzle rise, but is modest enough to be forgettable for carry. I avoided plastic models because of the reports of frequent breaking/cracking over time. I carry a CCW with this light during the winter months, and the size is small enough to not be noticable. with a proper holster, there are essentially no draw-backs with the TLR-1 on the gun. I am not a fan of lasers for anything but range-time, and additional size and weight with the TLR-3 may become an issue. However the TLR-1 should work on virtually ANY size handgun with a rail - but I would contemplate the usefulness on compact models as the light will likely project one full inch past the muzzle (defeating the purpose of a compact handgun). In sum: You would be hard pressed to find a more suitable pistol light for the price point. The TLR is an excellent product and I see no need to pay $300+ for a brand-name. If you are on the fence looking for a pistol light for home defense or carry, I would strongly suggest the TLR-1 as your first consideration. ... show more

I currently live with my mother and I'm 27, so what? That being said I am absolutely in love with this light!!! It is definitely a quality product!! I currently have it mounted on my CZ P-01 and it fits like a dream (I did have to modify the key but i'll get there). The light is solid, doesn't feel like a toy like most other lights I've seen or held. This thing is also blindingly bright, and will leave you disoriented for a few minutes after looking at it in a night time environment. It is also amazingly bright during the day too... The TLR-1 looks great on the weapon as well... It is sleek and a great match as far as finish goes (on my P-01 anyways). The switch is easy to reach and very easy to toggle. My shooting finger rests naturally on the toggle switch while not on the trigger (after adjusting the key, I promise I'll explain). Ok, for you CZ owners out there you might want to pay attention. I did modify the 1920 key to fit my CZ, and I did it with good reason. The 1913 key should fit the TLR-1 to the CZ near perfect, however for me there was a bit more of a reach than I wanted. So I took a file and filed away a bit of the material from the top and the trigger side of the key. It didn't take much and you need to check it constantly with a level to ensure it's not lopsided. For most people this may not be an issue, but for me it was. An added bonus of this was that the TLR now forms an aesthetically pleasing angle where the Mount meets the rail. I haven't had the privilege of shooting my weapon with the light mounted, but once I do I'll add how it performed. So as of right now my opinion of this Light mount is that it is absolutely amazing. *Weapon is safe and unloaded* I’m extremely impressed with the customer service of Streamlight. If you’re looking for a review from a person that REALLY runs their gear, look no further. I was recently doing an urban combat course, it was pretty rigorous. I was climbing an obstacle and fell, with the majority of the impact landing onto the TLR-1. The weapon fell between my body, and concrete. I crushed the face cover, as you can see in the photo. The quality aspect comes from the fact that the LIGHT STILL RAN. I couldn’t believe it could take that type of abuse and still operate. I completed the course with a crushed light, without issue. What impresses me with Streamlight, is the fact that this accident was 100% my fault. I told a representative at Streamlight about the incident, and offered to purchase a new face for my light. The representative sent me one, free or charge. She said: “We want to make sure our products work, all the time.”… I was blown away. 3 days later, and I had the part. Good as new. I was so happy with the service that I bought a couple more to add to my course, and duty pistols. The light itself is bright enough to get the job done. The switches allow for you to manipulate the light by “sweeping” your trigger finger either up or down. One direction is a constant on. The other is a “hold to activate”… this makes it so you can flash an area and go “light off” again just by releasing your finger. It’s great to gain a quick advantage without revealing your position too much. The “constant on” selection stays put, and keeps the light activated during rapid fire, drops (haha) and day-to-day drills. The light is rugged, and survives strenuous work. My first TLR-1 was attached to one of my pistols, and it has held for well over 10,000 rounds without issue. A quick few turns, releases the light, so you can mount it on just about anything. The illumination and field of view within the beams parameter is outstanding. The outside portion of your natural point of aim also stays brighter, giving you a good view of possible targets in the corners, away from the light. Now, that being said… do yourself a favor and save some money in the long run by buying yourself a couple sets of rechargeable batteries, and a charger. It’ll save you a ton of grief. This light really is quite impressive. And as a person who works on range, and shoots four times a week… I recommend you try it. ... show more

I have had a couple of less expensive weapon lights in the past - mostly for use on airsoft weapons so I didn't really care too much about the quality. I recently purchased a 1911 with a 1913 picatinny rail and wanted a solid light at a decent price to keep on the weapon. Streamlight has really outdone themselves with this one! Pros: - BRIGHT! This light is not tightly focused - over 300 lumens in a wide area makes for a superior weapon light. This will startle those on the other end of the light! - momentary on, strobe - hit the momentary on side (left) quickly twice and hold and you have a disorienting strobe light! Added to the intensity of the light and it will give you even more advantage in a real world situation. - Very simple mounting/removal - no need to tools to mount the light - just loosen the spring-loaded screw, attach and re-tighten - solid connection and high quality materials make for a very capable light. - comes with several rail system 'keys' to ensure it will fit your rail. - uses commonly available CR123 batteries - will also be able to use RCR123 as long as they are 3volt and regulated. I honeslty cannot think of any cons at this point. It's a great light and for the value it beats more expensive lights hands down! ... show more

My light broke after two years. The weak points seem to be the front lens and the battery door. Seems to me they made a solid, well constructed aluminum product and ruin it with a few cheap plastic parts. First the good: -Very bright light. -Great value compared to some of the competition. -The light itself is very well made EXCEPT for the battery door and the front lens. More on that later. -The batteries last a long time and are inexpensive. -The controls are easy to use. -Mounts and dismounts easily using only a large coin. Now the bad: -I've had it turn on or off on my while shooting. -The front lens seems to be cheap plastic and never comes fully clean, not sure if it is gunpowder residue or solvent that did it, but it's a bit cloudy on the bottom half. -In addition to the front lens, the rear battery door / power switch is plastic and not as sturdy as the rest of the light. The failure: The light did not see a lot of usage, since I got two years ago, maybe two or three hundred rounds went through the gun it was attached to (9mm). Today i happen to notice the battery compartment was open after I had racked the slide. Closer inspection found the top of the battery door had snapped off. I am going to contact Streamlight to see about a replacement door - but really they should make it out of aluminum too. Update - 8 days later: I changed my review to 4 stars because less than a week after sending the light back I received a package in the mail with my light fixed - no fuss, no cost. All I had to pay was the shipping to send it to them. They even cleaned or replaced the front lens. They certainly stand behind their products! ... show more

The lights are bright, bright even in the day time, this light will blind someone temporarily if you point it at their eyes. The light fits on S&W m&p 9mm pro rail with the rail key (GL key) that it comes installed from factory. I noticed that the instructions are not clear, but who reads instructions anyways. TIP: you have to open the lock all the way back in order to install the batteries, not just to the upright position, all the way back almost horizontal, once you done that turn the flash light around and push the cap open (there is a small lip that catches on a notch) once you have released cap you can slip in the batteries. Installation was a breeze, just unscrew till the movable rail on the flash light can slip over the rail on the gun, the tighten the screw back on, done. you can use a dime or quarter to screw or unscrew the flashlight. I noticed that it is very easy to flip the on/off switch once installed, and it does not get in the way of my trigger finger. Compared to the X300, for 1/3 the price you get almost the same performance, I think TLR-1 is a great value for the money. ... show more
