Excellent chair, easy to adjust and very supportive. My back is doing much better! Some people criticize it for looking plain but its a wolf in sheep's clothing.

  • A review from someone who's had a Herman Miller Embody
I've owned the Herman Miller Embody for a few weeks. It was a really nice chair with a couple of issues that made it a deal breaker for me. In this review, I'll be comparing the Steelcase Leap with the Herman Miller Embody. First, let me preface this by saying that the three stars review isn't because this is a bad chair. In fact, it's a wonderful chair. It's because I honestly believe that this chair is over priced. The base model at its current price point isn't that much more expensive than the Embody. And if you add the aluminum frame to this chair, it will cost more than the Embody which already comes with an aluminum base. Please read on for more details on why I think the Leap is over priced. When I brought this chair home, I could immediately tell that the build quality was definitely not on par with the Embody. The Embody feels and looks the part of an expensive chair. The Leap feels flimsy in comparison. The tilt back adjustment isn't as smooth as the Embody, which feels like butter. The armrests wobbles and rattles (on mine the left one rattles quite a bit which I find annoying). The adjustable lumbar is a joke. It feels cheap, and for reasons unknown to me, the left and right side aren't connected to each other. Not to mention that it doesn't really seem to do much for me. And little things like the knobs just feel cheaper than the Embody. What the Leap does have going for it is the comfortable and the adjustable seat. The seat is on rails that can be slid in and out to change the seat depth. On the Embody you pull on two handles in the front of the seat that allows you to adjust the length (by basically unrolling / rolling the fabric). The seat on the Leap is also softer due to it being foam. However, the Embody's seat is made of 4 layers providing suspension and support while allowing good air flow, shifting and moving with your bottom. It is definitely more high tech than the foam in the Leap, but I found the Leap's simple foam more comfortable. Though the Leap's seat lacked the nuance of the Embody's seat and thus, again, feels cheaper. Where the Leap shines and greatly outperforms the Embody is the adjustable armrest. The Embody's armrest kept bumping into my desk because it can only go up / down and in / out. The Leap's in/out, up/down, pivot, backward/forward movements proved much more useful in keeping me comfortable during marathon sessions in front of my desk. For example, I sometimes like to pull my chair up close to my desk. With the Leap I could slide the armrests back and scoot right up to my desk. And I keep coming back to this -- but it feels cheap. As mentioned before, the padding feels cheap and it rattles (audibly) when I rest my elbows on it. Now, the back support. The Herman Miller Embody wins in this department hands down. The Embody's back felt so comfortable, even when fully leaning back on it. The Leap isn't terrible, but I won't be using it as a leaning chair. Another cool thing about the Embody is that I could rock back and forth in it due to its unique pixellated design. If the Embody fixes the few issues (armrest, hard seat, seat depth), it would be the chair for me. As it stands though, the Leap wins because although the Embody is a comfortable chair, the Leap works better for me as a working chair during marathon sitting sessions. The Bottom Line: If you can find this chair for $600 or less (and it's possible), than it warrants a 5 star review. But at a similar price point as the Embody, I hesitate to recommend this chair to someone. Ultimately though, it is a chair that I decided to keep and not the Embody. This is a 5 star chair for me because I got it as such a great deal from a company that was offloading these (new) chairs for $350 a pop because they were going out of business. But at $1024 (the model I customized before I found the deal), I can only give it 3 stars ("It's okay"). Edit 3/18/2016: I've had this chair for almost half a year now. It has started making this horrible screeching sound whenever I lean back. I also suffer from upper back and neck pain, and I keep wishing for better upper back / neck support. The Herman Miller Embody would be my go to chair if they could address a few points. My review of the Embody is here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/RIBSNYECAOOKR/ref=cm_cr_getr_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B003M6JYEW This remains an average chair (3 stars) for me after almost half a year, even with the awesome deal I got on it. Edit 4/29/2016: I just thought this would be helpful. I mentioned the horrible screeching sound whenever I leaned back. I sprayed some WD-40 wherever I saw moving parts / contact points / joints and the screeching has disappeared. ... show more

  • Perfect chair
An incredibly comfortable and adjustable chair. The chair is pre assembled, just attach base. The online video for proper adjustment is great.

  • Very well designed and comfortable
I would recommend this chair. I sit in front of a desktop computer for more hours than is believable. I get up at the end of the day without backaches. Can't think of any negatives.
