So let me start with the good. The customization of the arms is something I've never seen before and is much more useful then I actually expected it to be, I rarely think about the arms on chairs because I rarely use them, but I definitely use these constantly because they allow me to move them so they're always worth using. The chair also seems to be fairly well constructed, very sturdy. Now then, to the bad. For one thing, I always seem to feel like I'm sliding out of the chair, resulting in my back muscles straining to prevent that from happening, resulting in very little comfort and much more back pain after use then my 5 year old 100 dollar chair I replaced with this ever caused. This chair also doesn't come with the optional lumbar support and it does not appear that is something you can purchase seperately but is meant to be purchased as an option at the time of purchase. I don't know why that doesn't come standard in a chair that costs this much, but I really notice the lack of the lumbar support during extended sitting sessions compared to my old cheaper chair that had said support. The chair also gets kind of warm, never been a huge deal for me, but my old chair had some sort mesh to it that seemed to breath better then this fabric. And on the topic of fabric, while this fabric isn't uncomfortable per say, I wouldn't say its comfortable either, I only really notice it when I'm not wearing a shirt, so in a work place this would be a non issue, but for home use I've definitely had chairs in the past whose fabric was more pleasant on my skin. In the end, I don't hate the chair, but I can't deny that this chair both looks less appealing, and is much less comfortable, then my worn down 100 dollar chair, and every day I sit in it I find myself wishing I was sitting in my old chair. The only reason I haven't switched back is my pride, not willing to admit my mistake in spending over a grand on a chair I hate sitting in instead of just being happy with my worn down but still very comfortable and functional 100 dollar one. As an aside, also not a fan of the arm rest material, my old chair had cushioning on top of the arms that made resting my arms on them a comfortable experience, this material, while having some give, is not nearly as soft or comfortable on the skin of my arm, just kind of feels like I"m resting my arms on hard rubber... Definitely wouldn't buy again nor would recommend unless your a chiropractor who knows enough about chairs and comfortable posture in them to know how to adjust the chair to the right settings for your body (and is better at figuring out how these adjustable levers work them I am). For everyone else it seems like the more typical 100-200 dollar one size fits all chairs will actually be more comfortable for a tenth of the price... ... show more

I've sat in the Steelcase Leap Chair for a number of years. It's extremly comfortable with just about every adjustment one might need to customize it to their particular body. I recently had the opportunity to try out the Gesture. It's an okay chair but there are a couple issues that make it a distant second to the Leap chair. First and most important you can't adjust the lumbar firmness on the Gesture. The Leap chair lumbar firmness is adjustable. This is one of the really usefull adjustements on the Leap and I can't imagine what was going through the minds of the Steelcase designers when they designed the next generation Gesture chair without this feature. I huge miss in my opinion. However, both the Gesture and the Leap allow for the Lumbar height to be adjusted. But with the Gesture you must pay for that feature separately and it does not appear to be on this chair sold through Amazon. Considering the gesture is an $1100 chair discounted, you'd think Steelcase would include the lumbar height adjustment. Steelcase states that the Gesture Chair has 3D LiveBack technology that allows the chair to move and automatically adjust to the back as you change position. But without the lumbar adjustments that the Leap Chair has this is a "One size fits all" solution in my opinion. I don't see how a chairs lumbar support can adjust automatically to satisfy a person that is 6 foot 3 inches and a person that is 5 foot, both having a different back curvature. In any case, my average 5 foot 10 inch male body felt more comfortable with the Leap Chair lumbar back support after I adjusted the firmness and height to my unique height and back curvature. By the way, the salesman in the office furniture store where I tried out the Gesture Chair prefers the Leap Chair for these reason. Second, my wrists kept slipping off the arm pads of the Gesture and the pads are rather hard and a bit uncomforable. I love the arm pads on the Leap - Nice and soft and shaped just right so your arms and wrists stay in place. The Gesture is touted as supporting many different seating positions. But I use my chair at an office desk and find that 99% of my seating is in a standard desk seating position. So the multiple seating positions that the Gesture supposedly supports are of no benefit to me. After a full day of sitting on the Steelcase Leap Chair year after year I feel refreshed and my body feels happy. I'll be sticking with the Leap. For another opinion, the Gesture was reviewed on wired dot com - "You're gonna want to sit down for this: 6 High End Desk Chairs". the Gesture only got a 5 out of 10, the worst rating of the 6 chairs reviewed. ... show more

    • Great overall (as you'd expect for the price) but could be improved.

I haven't tried any other high end office chairs, so not sure how this chair fits in compared to others but here's what I think about the steelcase gesture: Like: * Good back support. As you work at a keyboard the back is firm and supportive with the spine in an upright position. * Reclining back. When you feel like streching the back reclines right back on a light spring (pressure ajustable). This lets me move around in the chair every so often to stretch out my body or make slight ajustments to my posture and have the back move with me, maintaining support. * Armrests: Very ajustable armrests (height, horizontal angle, extension). Tapered so the can get close to the edge of the desk at the same height as desk (great for support while typing, chair pulled into desk). * Smooth castors, solid base. * Appearance. Don't like: * Non-mesh back gets warm (I work in a tropical environment). * Seat: The seat can be ajusted forward or backwards. I have long legs and even with the seat ajusted all the way forward (maximum extension), I would like to feel more support. I sometimes feel like I'm sliding forward (I have the seat at a high vertical level, also due to my long legs) and the seat angle is not ajustable. * The chair hasn't eliminated the shoulder pain I sometimes experience after long hours working (but in general it's a lot more comfortable than my previous, low-cost, chairs). ... show more
