Some of the guts fall out when the unit is opened. There are no valid instructions on properly wiring unit if you are a novice. The unit does not clamp down on cord even when the cord is of good size. Kept unit because I could not find an alternative on line and I needed to do the repair.

I had to run some extension cords to be able to put up our outdoor Christmas lights on the house the plug would not fit through the opening I had so I had to cut the end of the extension cord off so I could run it through and put a new end on these new ends came very fast delivery I got everything done the lights are installed and now the wife is happy.

Usually the UL symbol is stamped or molded on to the plug and socket if the item was tested and approved by the US Underwriters Laboratories which it does not have. Having the UL symbol on the right hand corner of the instruction sheet does not make it UL approved. The screws are steel and should be brass, all shafts and terminals are brass which is great and the terminal screws are not color coded as the instruction says green to ground wire, white to neutral wire and black to hot wire. The neutral plug shaft should be wider than the hot plug shaft to identify it as polarized plug or socket which these are not. The terminal screws heads are not wide enough to hold the copper wire strands of a 16 AWG cord. But, these plugs and sockets are well made except for the steel screws. I will use them by soldering the copper wire strands and tightly looping around the screws and retighten the screws several times just to be sure the wire loops are clamped down tightly. Be sure the wire is hooked under on each terminal before being screwed down. Remember extension cords are only temporary don't leave it plugged in over night.

Actually, this review just echoes several other reviews about the difficulty of installing. I am not a stranger to splicing electrical cords—in all different configurations—so, even after reading the reviews and watching the video, I just figured I could accomplish this anyway. So here are the issues: 1) Video is not very helpful—too fast and demonstrators fingers are all over the connections making the process almost impossible to see. Also, what you can see with the installation of one of the prongs is that the wire is actually being place on the post counter-clockwise instead of clockwise so it will NOT actually wrap around the post as it is being tightened. 2) As others have noted, there are notches at the end of the posts which, apparently, are designed to thread the wiring through—including the insulation—in order to hold the wiring in place. Not a bad idea, but it makes it very difficult to actually get the wire end flat enough to get under the mounting screw, even with the help of a flat-head screwdriver and even twisting the wire end and bending it into a hook with needle nose pliers to ensure it wraps well while tightening. 3) The grounding post is actually loose and falls out as soon as the cover of the plug is removed. This is not necessarily unsafe—it is easy to slip it back into its rubber mounting. But because it is loose, you actually have to press down on it as you’re trying to screw the set screw while also trying to hold the wiring in place. I am not too proud to admit that my dexterity might not be up to the task, but I’m now going to purchase a plug replacement that 1) allows the connecting wire to be tightened between two plates instead of around a screw, and 2) that has a collar on the end that clamps down on the incoming cord to remove pressure on the internal connections. And, yes, Starelo makes those, too, which I will buy.
