Im no expert builder or block layer by any means, but figured I would build the firepit myself out of cinder blocks that I had lying around. I used stucco on the outside to match my house, used a 3/4" piece of plywood for the outside template and cut the interior dimension of 14"x48" . I decided to use 2"x10" fir for the top (stained) glued and stapled the plywood to the 2x10 frame to ensure it would stay square. Pan was easy to install, basically just drop it in. I had to tie into my natural gas and run about 30' of new pipe. Overall I am very happy with the way it turned out. The whistling everyone talks about is there if you turn the gas on full blast, but turned down to where the flame is in the pic, there is no whistle. Saw you can buy a different gas line that has varied ribs which supposedly quiets the whistling, havent purchased that as of yet, maybe in the future but really dont need too much more flame than what is shown. ... show more

The jets stick up too high and are almost impossible to cover with glass beads. It ends up looking like a birthday cake with individual candles rather than a natural looking flame
