  • Spytec STI GL300 Mini GPS Tracker – Accurate Tracking but Requires Subscription
Set name: Starter Kit (1st Month Included)
This GPS tracker is compact and easy to hide, making it useful for tracking vehicles, assets, or personal items in real time. The location accuracy is generally good, and it updates frequently depending on the plan you choose. The battery life is decent and can last several days with normal use. However, it requires a monthly subscription to work, which can make it expensive over time. The app experience is basic, but it gets the job done for tracking locations. Overall, a reliable tracker for real-time monitoring, but the ongoing cost is something to consider. ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ ... show more

Works perfectly. Battery life not quite as good as it says but still goof enough. Easy set up, easy use, would definitely recommend especially for the price

  • Marketing vs Operations
The Good: 1) It's small making it easy to conceal 2) It's lightweight 3) The rubber coating helps protect the device The Bad: 1) The device is preset to a 1 minute update with no instructions in the manual or online on how to change it or if it can be changed. I signed up for the 5 second updates and could only get 1 minute updates. I'm sure there is a way to change this but it shouldn't take repeated requests by e-mail waiting for their responses. This should be made clear at time of activation or before. 2) the online only manual is basic and lacks details. Most of it just explains how to operate the basic online menu items. There is very little about the device. 3) tech support is by e-mail only or if they call the customer. Their user support forum can only be found by calling for tech support and getting it from a recording. Their support forum is a ghost town with no help 4) The device has a 30 second preset for showing or notifying there's movement. Tech support email said it could be changed but not how. Again, no help on their website or in their manual 5) Tracking is viewed via their www site. Cell phones that can access the www will work but there is no cell phone version of the website. Plan on having to zoom in to log in and manipulate functions. It's unsafe for use with live mobile tracking. 6) Their software plots paths using straight lines from one update to the next. With 1 minute updates it would be nice if this option could be turned off as the lines are unrelated to the path of the device. The Ugly: 1) According to their tech e-mail, the "two week battery life" is calculated with a 1 minute update frequency and movement is restricted to 1 hour a day. Nowhere on Amazon, their website or in their manual do they indicate the battery life run time if movement is constant or if one subscribes to the higher priced updates of less than 1 minute. 2) The 1 minute updates are every minute it reads the GPS coordinates and a minute later their online program updates to those coordinates. When the position is received it is where the device was 2 minutes ago. 3) While most GPS devices are not always spot on with location this one it happens too often to be relied upon for accuracy. 4) The website has an auto log-off feature that can't be turned off. It relies on user interaction with the website as opposed to the GPS updates. During mobile tracking this requires ongoing timely interaction with the website to keep it from logging us off. -------------------------------------------------------------- Obviously different people have different uses for GPS tracking devices and the nature of the technology at this point can have its limitations. If you want a device that will give you the general where-a-bouts every couple minutes or a passive tracker that can be checked later, this device may meet your needs. What I need is a device with software suitable for live mobile tracking with a much longer battery life. Battery life is a challenge with all of these GPS trackers. But, knowing the limitations up front allows us to work with this issue. This company chose to market the battery life as something it isn't and getting the truth from them took more effort than it should have. Lastly, if this company spent as much time on operations as they did marketing they might have a product worth having and working around/with any deficiencies. How this became the #1 seller on Amazon is beyond me. Maybe I'm operating on the wrong frequency. ++++++++++++++++++ Follow up. Tech support responded about an hour after I posted this review and one on the company website. They apologized and offered a free device with extra battery life and free service until I was satisfied with their tracker and their service. They deserve credit for this response. I will not be taking Spytec up on the kind offer. There are simply too many issues with their product/service even if their tech support responded quickly. Most of these issues are fairly basic for a GPS and should have been addressed up front. ... show more

  • Awesome unit! See (my) Pros and Cons here. Awesome unit! See (my) Pros and Cons here.
UPDATE: Finally canceled the service because I no longer need it and canceling was pretty easy. I chatted support, said, "hey I wanna cancel" and they pointed me straight to the page to cancel (which now that I see it, I could have found it on my own if I just looked for it). Filled it out and bam, was canceled right away. I saw somebody complaining on here that it wasn't easy to cancel... was pretty easy for me :| Took like 2 minutes. They said I can reactivate it whenever AND it apparently has a LIFETIME warranty... that's pretty amazing. I never see lifetime warranties in products these days. If I ever need to track something again, I'll re-activate this! Worked really well when I was using it! I like it so far but one thing they don't mention on here is the prices for other service options: $25 for 1 minute updates (only updates map every 1 minute) up to $45 for about 5 second updates. I'm using this in case my electric bicycle (a very powerful and expensive one) gets stolen (I hid this unit INSIDE the bike's battery packaging [so it looks like part of the battery] and have it charging via the battery so it will basically last forever) and so far, it works perfectly. I set up a test with my girlfriend where she took the bike and I had to find her just using the GPS. Caught her at a store about 15 minutes after she said "come find me." So I'm very pleased with it so far! I did have to search around in the area for a little bit because sometimes it's not super accurate even outside but still, found her in 15 minutes... pretty good! They don't really advertise it as that kind of tracker but... works well. Pros: - Works pretty much right out of the box, YOU DO NOT NEED TO GO BUY A SIM CARD, it comes with one - my favorite thing about this unit. All you have to do is register your device, setup your payment and then wait a few hours for everything to activate and start using. - Seems to be fairly accurate AS LONG as it's outdoors and moving. Once you go inside any place, as with most GPS units, it pings you all over the place within about 1,000-2,000 ft. Sometimes further. So if your using it for an electric bike like I am, you might want to take note of that. Still gives you an idea of where it is though. - No contract so you can cancel your plan and start it back up if your bike or car gets stolen. This is a pretty huge plus for me. I will have it deactivated until - Long-lasting battery. Not attached to my e-bike battery, it seems to get about a week of life per charge (like from 100% to absolute 0). Connect it to a portable USB charger and you can probably get 2 or 3 weeks out of it. Or do like me and connect it to your car or bike battery and have it last forever without recharging :D - It's small! Love the size, I actually thought it would be a little better. Included a picture of me holding it. Cons: - The service plan... and well, the unit itself, is kind of.. expensive compared to others or a pre-paid SIM card option. Then again, works right out of box. - Not always accurate, even when outside. But it works well enough. Overall: It's a nice little unit. Not the cheapest, but works right out of the box - key feature for me. Didn't have to deal with prepaid SIM card nonsense, carriers, etc. ... show more

  • Decent unit, not perfect, purchased for tracking autistic child
So, there are quite a few glowing reviews on this product. To be fair, it's pretty decent, but there are a few quirks. Cons - The website used for all tracking and reporting IS NOT HTTPS (secured using TLS / SSL); your logon and password are sent unencrypted for the tracking portal. I would expect that at least the logon part of the session to use HTTPS. - Your entire browsing session for the SpyTec Portal IS NOT HTTPS; anyone able to sniff your network traffic knows exactly what you are browsing while on the Portal - The GPS seems to be off by up to about 30-40 feet on our unit; may lead to improper street address resolution. We've found this to be the case if the unit is indoors, or outdoors, but especially if it's inside a building somehow. - The web portal seems to be geared to tracking "drivers," as if this product is only to be used for tracking vehicles. Not a big deal, but it is small enough to be able to be used for just about any useful GPS purpose. Not exactly a con, but it does make using the web portal slightly strange. Pros - The SpyTec web portal is well thought out in general - The web portal can be accessed from any modern browser, not limiting you to a specific Android or iOS application, for example - The service does allow you to define areas to be notified when the GPS leaves / returns to certain area - It appears to be much more effective than bracelet GPS devices sold for children, especially in that it works to some extent inside buildings - Mapping / Reporting is based on Google Maps, and that's pretty nice Background: We purchased this unit to track our 3 year old child that suffers from an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. He's doing well, but he can't communicate well verbally. Recently, he ran away in a large mall, and it was nearly impossible to find him, let alone track him. After doing a fair bit of research it was clear that many of the devices on the market do not work well inside buildings, etc. We purchased this unit to enable us to be able to find him in a mall. Our success is mixed, but it DOES generate enough information to allow law enforcement to know where to look. Moreover, you can give them the logon and let them search with as close to real time data as you can get. On an adult sized individual, the device would be fairly small. On a small child, the belt clip would be a decent size, and would likely be noticed. However, if put inside a jacket or coat, the device is easy to hide and harder to find. (The down side would be if the coat was taken off...) I do want to be VERY clear about the lack of security on the Spy Tec website portal. There is none. It's extremely odd that in this day and age they would not have a secure website. The fact that the logon (at minimum) is not HTTPS (specifically TLS if you know what that is) means that your user ID and password are easily picked up. DO NOT USE A STANDARD USER ID OR PASSWORD WITH THE SPY TEC WEB PORTAL. ... show more

  • This product works great out of the box - Highly recommend
Ok folks forget everything you may have read in the past about the website and credit card processing of their website. I just received this and got it working two days ago and the product is GREAT !!!. I deal in technology so things are a bit easier to assess for me. First up, the registration on the website took all of about 10 minutes max. Within seconds not hours, I received a confirmation email that the device was activated and up and running. I then proceeded to take it out of the box and charge the device. It took about 1 hour but the blinking RED Light will go off once fully charged. While Charging I turned the device on so it can begin getting a cell signal. Proceeded to log into the website and setup all the needed parameters. Will not go into all of them here, but all of the options were straight forward and important that you setup. Things like the name of the device and the time zone you are in. Try not to begin tracking anything as there it is nothing to track until you get it out on the road. Geofencing was the only tricky thing to use it was not to clear on how to create the circle needed to create the geofence but after playing with it for about 10 min was able to create a geofence. Other than that, that was the only hard part. We used the following magnetic box to house it and it is of great quality. Solid magnet and waterproof seal. Sold here on Amazon. This product came quickly when ordered with the GL300 the other recommended box is still pending arrival and I am going to cancel it. Maybe coming from China. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KC70B2I?redirect=true&ref_=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_1 The tracking is great, it has gone through an airport, airport parking garage over train tracks and the software online to track the device is great. There is no phone app so the only suggestion here would be to grab your IPAD and turn on your HOTSPOT On you phone and get internet that way. The app works great on a full size IPAD as well. Don't know how it looks on the IPAD mini. Battery life looks good but we chose the $30 a month plan where it intervals the GL300 a bit more per minute so maybe that will eat up the battery a bit quicker. Another cool thing is that it knows "Don't know how" when the vehicle is off or on. Will report back later on battery life. UPDATE 8/5 - Battery is lasting 8-9 days for me, not two weeks. However what I noticed is that once it gets to about 20% is shutdown that same day. It is burning about 10% a day but the first time it got down to 20% which I thought would give me one more day, it just dropped off that same day. Not sure why. Will provide another update later. Good luck !!! ... show more

  • Def worth every penny Def worth every penny
Set name: Starter Kit (1st Month Included)
I used the reviews on trackers to pick what I thought was best for me and I can tell you 100% It work amazingly , my wife is a habitual cheater unfortunately and since she’s using my car I had to put this in the car to make sure she’s not doing bad things until she proves her trust to me . I literally went down the tracker rabbit hole investigating literally any and all trackers Bluetooth , gps , Cellular etc and this one works better than even the expensive trackers . You get a 2 day free trial if you pay month to month which is $40 per month and that’s well worth it to know your safe and loved ones are safe , the accuracy is on point down to the parking spot my car is in and if not it’s only Within 20 ft or so off . Real time tracking app is easy , super reliable and so far in 3 days I’ve had customer service contact me 4 times just to make sure I’m happy and to make sure I don’t need help . Turn it on , charge it up and let it do its thing . Five stars all day long for me .the photo is just now in real time shows speed and every detail you can want . 5 second refresh updates as well . ... show more

  • Mostly Happy
I'm very happy with this unit and I'm not. It does a nice job of tracking the vehicle, and so far has been very reliable. I like the real time view better than the map view and it updates, although not as quickly as the 30 second option I'm paying for. Accuracy varies and if the vehicle is in a shopping center that's easy to figure, but if it stops at a house, I wouldn't necessarily believe the address that is being displayed. I tested it at my own home and sometimes it gave the correct address and other times it was homes up the street. And of course trees really mess it up. It's always close but I wouldn't go busting someone's door down based on the display. Sometimes I will take the address given and put it into Google to see what, if any, information it gives. If available the street view can help also to see if the address makes sense. Another issue if it maters is the display doesn't always say that the vehicle is off even when you know it is. This can be confusing when you think the vehicle isn't stopped at an address when it really is. The battery in my case does not last 2 weeks and barely makes one. Not good if getting to the vehicle is difficult or impossible before it runs out. It would be great if it could be turned off and on remotely so it could be turned off when the vehicle is just sitting all night. One other thing that needs work is the 24 hour map; it is very difficult to follow and nearly impossible even on a laptop unless you blow it up. Speaking of that, the app for a cell phone needs improvement, at least for my Android LG G4. Trying to expand the map view to make street names readable is difficult. I know much of this is a wish list, but one other would be in settings. I would like to be able to set my map view at a certain distance where street names are visible and have that be the default. As it is every time you update it reverts back. If 3.5 stars were possible I would give it that, but one last thing. It would be great if one could assign known coordinates to a space or building. This might help the unit's accuracy. ... show more
