My daughter and I are big Splatoon fans. I originally bought the first game on clearance and barely touched it until I started revisiting old Wii U games. Luckily, I got hooked before Nintendo shut down its multiplayer servers. I skipped Splatoon 2, but by the time Splatoon 3 arrived, my daughter was old enough for us to pair up in Turf Wars and Grizzco missions. Just to get it out of the way, I'll start with my biggest disappointment with Splatoon Raiders: there’s no same-console multiplayer co-op. Multiplayer is available, but the other person needs another Switch 2 and another copy of the game. For a series that lends itself so naturally to family play, that feels like a huge missed opportunity. Once I got past that, however, I found myself loving the game. The story begins with you piloting a helicopter carrying Deep Cut (Shiver, Frye, and Big Man) when it crashes on a group of islands that have mysteriously emerged from Splatoon’s water-covered world. A month later, you're no longer the pilot but “the Mechanic”—a brilliant builder who constructed a giant Hideout Ship. From there, you travel from island to island on raids, battle hordes of Salmonid-like creatures, gather treasure and supplies, and return to the ship to improve your equipment. Raiders keeps the familiar Splatoon combat mechanics...covering the environment in ink, swimming through it, popping up to attack, refilling your tank, and constantly repositioning yourself...but places them inside a very different kind of game. Rather than a series of short competitive matches, it plays more like a 3D action-platformer crossed with a looter-shooter. Defeated enemies drop weapons, and while the familiar categories are still here...shooters, rollers, sloshers, and so on...the individual weapons become loot that you collect and level up. I especially like that they’re presented as creations the Mechanic has assembled from junk and debris found around the islands. They look cobbled together, but in the wonderfully imaginative way you’d expect from Splatoon. There’s also a new gadget system that replaces the usual combination of subweapon and Special. You choose among Speed, Power, and Tactics setups, then equip gadgets with cooldown periods that can help you move, escape danger, or wipe out groups of enemies. You can add parts to improve them, and as the game becomes more intense, it also gives you more tools with which to fight back. The game introduces new movement mechanics without making everything you learned in the earlier games irrelevant. Inking walls, squid jumping, swimming through your own ink, and knowing when to surface all remain important. At different points, however, there are also other new mechaniscs, such as riding a surfboard across water, using a bot to make supercharged jumps, and even riding Big Man after filling the Showstopper gauge. You select a location on the map, launch a raid, search for treasure, complete combat and traversal challenges, and then move on to another area. Some sections feel fairly open, almost like an open-world game, while others lead you along a more defined path, like a rail shooter. Most smaller missions take around five to ten minutes, so it’s easy to play briefly, but difficult to stop after only one. The difficulty also feels just right. You can choose from three difficulty levels at the beginning, and the action becomes noticeably more intense as you progress without becoming frustrating. Bosses may seem intimidating at first, but once you learn their patterns and make better use of your weapons and gadgets, they feel challenging rather than unfair. I was surprised by how much narrative and lore the game contains. The story is lighter than a full-scale adventure game, but it’s more substantial than I expected. Frye, Shiver, and Big Man receive much more dialogue, personality, and involvement than they did when they were introduced in Splatoon 3. You also unlock a treasure-locating bot that carries one member of Deep Cut along with you during missions. Scrolls and research documents reveal more about the islands, the creatures you encounter, and the events that caused this strange new land to emerge. Uncovering these mysteries reminded me of finding the Sunken Scrolls in Splatoon 3’s solo mode. Some entries expand after you defeat enough of a particular enemy, giving the fighting and collecting a narrative purpose beyond simply accumulating items. The Mysterious Shards, ruins, rubble, returning characters, and little jokes throughout all contribute to the atmosphere. The imagination and humor of the original games are still here and seem to be getting better with age. Visually, the game is unmistakably Splatoon, but the tropical islands, water, ink effects, and environmental detail make it feel like a genuine Switch 2 release. I particularly like seeing old kitchen utensils and other human objects scattered throughout the landscape, a subtle continuation of everything the first three games revealed about the origins of Splatoon’s world. I also appreciate the expanded character customization, including details such as hairstyles and eyebrows. Splatoon Raiders is familiar enough that longtime players can immediately use the techniques they already know, but different enough to justify being its own game. It takes the shooting and movement that make Splatoon so much fun and builds an imaginative action-platforming looter-shooter around them. The best review came from my daughter, to whom I gave the game for her 11th birthday. Just minutes after starting, she said, “I think I’m going to love this game,” followed almost immediately by, “Wait, I already love this game.” I’m several decades older than she is, but I can say the same thing.

One of the greatest co-op games I've ever experienced. Seriously. Play this with a friend, you won’t regret it. It has a super fun and addictive loop of gathering materials, upgrading kits and weapons, and getting back in the fight. You always feel like you are getting stronger, and the game keeps giving you new challenges so it never gets stale! On a side note, the co-op experience is super seamless and easy to set up, and one of the best implementation of a story based co-op game i’ve ever played. I LOVE SPLATOON :)

My sons pre-ordered the game from Amazon, and have been hyped to play it since they saw the announcement. Amazon delayed the shipping at the last minute (boooo!), so I ended up ordering the game from a brick-and-mortar store and returned the one from Amazon. As for the game, I’ll just say that it was worth spending the extra $10 to avoid Amazon’s shipping delays. This game has been the anlmost exclusively played game in my household since release (with Denshattack coming in 2nd). There are many good descriptions elsewhere, so I won’t cover the game’s basics here. I will say that we have all spent time playing and watching each other play and have not become bored with either. My children (10 21 years) are huge Splatoon fans, but I have not played since the first game; however, we all thoroughly enjoy Raiders. I’ve put in about 6 hours, and have never gotten bored, and everyone in my family has found their own unique way to progress through the game — allowing us to each see something new as we’ve watched each other. All in all, it’s a very high recommend as a looter shooter, and it’s one that the whole family can play and enjoy together.

I got this game digitally for my brother and he told me that this is his favorite Splatoon game! As for me, I got the game physically since I prefer physical games. Nintendo has been doing an amazing job at pumping out more quality games for Switch 1 and Switch 2, and this game is an example of how they still have that magic touch whenever it comes to developing games! Since Splatoon 1 on the Wii U, I knew that this franchise would be something really special if the developers continued to refine the gameplay and add more content. With Splatoon 2, they did just that by adding Salmon Run, Clam Blitz, and the Octo Expansion DLC. Even though the main campaign in Splatoon 2 was pretty grueling to 100% complete, there were some levels that were really fun to beat! Whenever Splatoon 3 came out, I was kinda shocked since I thought Nintendo would save it as a launch title for the Switch 2. That said, Splatoon 3 felt like the culmination of what the franchise was known for. With the Side Order DLC and a much better main campaign that drew inspiration from Octo Expansion, I thought that Nintendo would wait longer to make another Splatoon game, but instead, we got this incredible spinoff that adds so much depth to the gameplay that I honestly can’t go back to playing Salmon Run on Splatoon 2 & 3 again without feeling restricted and limited to what I can do as the player! Nintendo absolutely knocked it out of the park with this one, and it’s not $70-$80!!! Which is something I appreciate! Splatoon 3’s Salmon Run felt way too intense with how limited you are compared to what this game offers you. On top of that, this game is so much fun to play with friends! You can play almost the ENTIRE game with friends, or you can request for help/go help others while at any point during the game. I hope Nintendo continues to add this kind of multiplayer functionality as they release more games during the Switch 2 generation. I can only hope that Nintendo continues listen to the fans and address the criticisms that they’ve received ever since the Switch 2 was announced and launched last year. With how they’ve handled this game and Rhythm Heaven, I want them to continue winning old fans back while also continuing to bring in new fans! They have come a long way since the late 70’s, and, now that they have a powerful system, I want them to continue being successful, but in a way that benefits them AND us, the fans who have stuck with them. It saddens me that the big-N has made some pretty frustrating decisions over the past year that has made it hard to root for them, but I KNOW that they are MORE than capable of fixing those issues and turning things around for themselves. I’ve seen it time and time again from them. At the end of the day, I’m just a really optimistic fan who wants to see them succeed since they’ve been around since the beginning, and I want them to continue going strong. One of my favorite Nintendo Switch 2 games so far. Definitely one of the best Splatoon games in my opinion. Fully Co-Op and full of content. If you like Fast Paced gameplay and Third person Shooters you will definitely enjoy it. It has Looter Shooter mechanics similar to Borderlands and has Monster Hunter-Esque reward structure were you are always progressing in someway. Very easy to pick up and play, the controls are easy to understand and story is very simple to follow.

The focus on singleplayer in this game allowed it to be much more developed than previous Splatoon single player modes. Its progression and leveling systems are much more in depth than previous games, allowing for a lot of customization of abilities and playstyles. The multiplayer modes felt a bit less developed due to not being the focus of the game, but I did have fun with it. Overall a very fun game and a good addition to the Splatoon series. Master Mega is my favorite!
