  • These are great and have held up for almost 5 years so far!
I thought I'd give a review after using the same set for almost 5 years. They still seal well but you have to make sure that you've really sealed them. I use the white sealing clip first to run back and forth across the seal (to save my fingers). Then I use my fingers to really make sure it's evenly sealed and sometimes have to pinch it closed and run my fingers along the seal til it's smooth. The little vacuum pump works great and is rechargeable. If it doesn't vacuum well, then recheck the zipper seal. As soon as I pop the pump off the bag, I put my finger on the air valve to make sure it's closed and sealed. It doesn't say to do this, it's just something I've always done. I've never had to replace the air valve on any bags. I wash the bags in soapy water and let them air dry and store them flat. I have reused them now for almost 5 years. I haven't found that they hold odors or stains. A couple have worn out but the rest are still holding the seal and I've never had any trouble with the pump. I use them to store food in the freezer and they lay flat and take up less room than containers. Work great for freezing tortillas. I've used them in the fridge to store various odd shaped things without using the vacuum seal instead of using disposal ziplock bags. I also use them to store foods in the cupboard on occasion. I've never used them for liquids or as sous vida bags. So with this track record I recommend them highly for freezer, fridge & cupboard use. ... show more

  • Works like it's supposed to, is very easy to use, and has many uses
I bought it to seal my seeds, and needed heavy duty freezer vacuum bags that are reusable for when I need to pull seeds out to plant, then reseal the remaining seed stock. It works well, and is very convenient. The little pump is sufficient... it will pull the necessary vacuum, but is fairly slow. But the convenience of a rechargeable small pump makes it fine for this use. If I was going to do a whole lot at a time, I'd probably rig up my commercial vacuum pump, but it's not worth the effort for as easy as it is to just grab this little unit. The bags are basically a heavy duty ZipLok freezer bag, but with the textured surface on the inside for the air to flow, and the simple check valve that the pump sets on, seals via the silicone rubber ring on the pump, and allows the pump to extract the air. It takes a few seconds for the check valve to open up, but when it does, you can then see the bag start to collapse as the air is sucked out. Great little product for the price and does what other things can't do. I'll be interested to try it on sous vide, but that's not what I bought it for... that'll just be a bonus. I do use it to store my homemade bread in. I make two loaves at a time, and one loaf get put in one of these bags, extract just enough air until the bread compresses slightly, then into the freezer. No ice crystals and it thaws perfectly. The loaf that I'm using goes into one of the large 12x13" bags, and again, I pull just enough air out until you see a slight compression of the bread... now it's sealed from mold spores and stays fresh for a very long time. It's not that hard to pull a vacuum on it after taking the loaf out to slice some pieces off of it, and the pump is compact enough to just leave on the counter. It also works great for putting tortilla chips in. When we get the big bag of tortilla chips from COSTCO, the first thing is take out as many as will fit into one of these large vacuum bags and pulling a vacuum on it. The chips stay fresh, which they won't in the opened store bag they came in. Extra produce from the farm [tomato and pepper slices first frozen on a cookie sheet] can go into these bags and then into the freezer. You can pull out "fresh" tomato and peppers to use, then re-vacuum the bag to keep ice crystals from forming on the pieces. Works great for cookies and other snacks that will go stale. Basically, anything that I need access to that the Food Saver permanently sealed bags aren't practical for, these get used. I have found that the valves do sometimes slightly leak over time, so I usually put a small piece of thin film tape [like packing tape, with a folded over section for a pull tab] over the suction valve after I've pulled the vacuum, which can be reused every time. Great little product, and I bought 3 kits for the farm. ... show more

  • the secret to these bags is a little piece of tape
i discovered sous vide cooking a couple years ago from Guga, and Sous Vide Everything, and have incorporated it into more than ½ of my meal plan for our family. Steaks, stews, freezing and reheating, it makes everything simpler, and the vacuum system means there’s no freezer burn, and everything is cooked to a safe temperature of my family. this vacuum pump is the handheld one i like the best, it has a liquid separator attachment that allows the vacuum to work with bags that contain liquid. the other hand held ones that do not come with the liquid separator fail if any liquid is vacuumed. the blue zippered bags with the blue seal are all about the same no matter who they are purchased from. the bags are very strong, the zippers seal really well, but the vacuum seals are what everyone seem to complain about, if they don’t seal, the bag loses vacuum, or worse, allows water in the bag during the sous vide process. there is a simple fix for this, that after years of using these bags, i’ve never had a seal failure, all it takes is a piece of clear tape over the seal after vacuuming the bag. it stays on in the freezer, and stays on when reheating the bag in water later, problem solved! the bags are even washable as long as you haven’t heated them up too much previously, turn them inside out and wash them in dish soap. this set came with several sizes of bags to fit different types of food storage needs. overall a decent value, but a one star ding because they tend to include unnecessary accessories to pad the piece count of the order, i’d rather have more bags. ... show more
