  • Compact, attractive turntable with classic design and sound
This is a compact, attractive turntable that can be used for playing and digitising records. It looks just as expected from the product description, with a wooden exterior is reminiscent of classic turntables from the 20th century, combined with a more contemporary appearance for the rest. For record aficionados, it works well for playing music, with reasonably good sound quality for a device of its size. It also supports Bluetooth, USB and analogue inputs. I compared the same piece of music on a vinyl record and a streaming app over Bluetooth. Unsurprisingly, the sound was very different, with the Bluetooth version offering more bass and a sound style closer to a typical Bluetooth speaker. The ability to use the device for playing Bluetooth audio, audio files on a USB stick or audio input from an auxiliary source is nice. The ability to send the turntable output to a larger audio system, via the analogue outputs, however, is probably more useful. It allows the device to work as a turntable in a larger audio system. For those who like the audio properties of records but prefer convenience for playback, the MP3 digitisation feature is useful, although MP3 is a lossy codec. Digitising audio from inherited records is the primary use I have for a turntable, but I prefer to use the analogue outputs and record in a lossless format, then use lossy compression for devices with limited storage. A couple of features I’d have liked are the ability to select Bluetooth codecs and the ability to transmit turntable output over Bluetooth. A Bluetooth transmitter/receiver with support for multiple codecs can solve both problems, using the analogue inputs and outputs, but it would be a nice feature to include. I have no expertise in turntables, but the sound matches what I’d expect. For either listening to or digitising records, this seems like a very useful device, and I can recommend it. ... show more

  • For the audiophiles
"Not Our Mothers' Record Player!" While one can say with legitimacy that I used to be ALL into music, it isn't the case in my greying out years - I've learned a very strong appreciation of Silence and/or quietness. It would be unfair to say that is a complete blanket statement that applies 100% of the time, I still have my rockin' out moments. I fully remember the particular quality of sound from vinyl records, and how different it is from cassettes, CDs, and pure digital MP3-4 formats. For the diehard audiophiles this has been a major source of dialogue since CDs took over; my hearing in general is on the edge of needing hearing aids, but even so - those differences are noticeable for me too. I cannot claim to have a strong preference for any format, but I am as susceptible to nostalgia as anyone else, so I'm a bit anxious to hear some records spun once again. Combining most all of the 21st century plugs and component access into this turntable is a great way to bring all formats together in one unit. It is super lightweight, much to my surprise, and it has pleasing aesthetics to boot. I did have to loosen up one of the hinge pins for a tiny adjustment so the lid would actually connect as intended, but that is so minor as to almost not warrant the mention but for the possibility of someone else encountering it; loosen the 2 Phillips head screws and slide it inward to close the gap, its' just a 16th inch or so of an adjustment. I don't have any records yet to play on it, but I'm looking forward to going to the 2nd hand and thrift stores on a quest for some. I BT paired it with my desktop to run some sound through, test out the speakers - it has nice clarity but not super loud - they're about one expects from built-in speaks. It could turn out that the vinyl nostalgia isn't so strong, and I end up not really using the unit much; if that holds then I'll likely add it to the resell stock - albeit as a package with whatever records I'm able to come up with. ... show more

  • Advanced upgrade over suitcase record players
Tracking force: around 5.8 grams. A touch heavy, but overall pretty standard for this type of mechanism and cartridge. Suitcase record players are very popular, but are often not very good. This represents a feature-rich upgrade to those, but does share some of the weaknesses. The looks of this unit are great. It appears quite premium, though feels a bit light and one of the knobs tended to catch a bit on the case. It has a lot of add-ons for a record player. Bluetooth works great, and it can play from and record to USB jump drives. Having RCA outputs will also let you connect this to a real amplifier if your audio adventure goes to the next step. The downside is the sound quality, mainly around the bass. Due to the nature of the two small speakers, there is not much bass. As a result, the sound can seem "thin." Cranking up the volume to try and tease out more bass and lead to distortion. Overall, I would be inclined to rate this as a 3 star due to the price compared to the sound quality, but I will give it 4 stars due to the great looks and long 5-year warranty. As long as you understand the sound signature that this delivers, you should be happy. ... show more
