  • SSL SDML9ACP Revised Review: an ok buy
Style: 9 inch
Revised Review, Had to return 2 units, as both had an audio issue, the first one that I purchased had no sound from the RCA jacks after a few months and after a year the replacement one had on again/off again sound issues. Customer service has been great with both warranty returns, although you have to send the old one back first before receiving the replacement unit, so you may be driving with a hole in your dash for a week or two. Hope the 3rd time is the charm, as I like the unit but quality control may be an issue. Other revision to the review is sound quality, the second unit I received as a replacement had a different sound quality/profile and seemed very flat, had to readjust my amp a few times to get it to sound ok, assuming whomever makes the unit for SSL used different internals during production, SSL changed firmware or I got a bad replacement unit from the get go, otherwise had no issues with the screen or other features. You do get what you pay for, so dropped the rating it to 3 stars. Note: Other than branding and the screen sizes, the Boss Audio, Sound Storm Labs and Planet Audio floating screen 1 din decks are identical Ok, this a rambling free-form non-comprehensive first impressions after installing and using the unit for a few days review, so, here we go Note for the review; Installed in an older sports car and this unit replaced a non CarPlay 1 din JVC digital audio deck with lcd screen that cost more, audio is routed via the RCA jacks into a JBL amp and JBL speakers and sub, internal amp is not used as I have an external powering the speakers. Was slightly skeptical about getting this unit, it's not a no name brand, but most people would call it a very budget friendly lower end one, or so I thought, but after seeing and playing with the 10 inch Boss version in person at a big box electronics store, I decided to give it a go as I wanted a 1 din CarPlay unit and I could return it if I did not like it or care for the quality. Now the box is big (and the contents in it are very well protected), you wonder why is it so big? the screen, it's huge and has a real volume knob (really dislike those volume buttons on the newer CarPlay decks out now), it's basically an small iPad on a permenant mount, it adjust up, down and swings side to side, plenty of adjustment, would have like it to go in just a bit, sticks out just a bit too much. I'm glad I bought the 9 inch version, the 10 inch one, would have been too big for my dash and the screen resolution is the same between them. I went to the yellow and blue box electronics retailer near me to see other floating screen and 2 din CarPlay decks in person before purchasing this one (they had the Boss 10 inch one on display along with the name brands) and the screen resolution on the major name brands were the same and cost more and the HD screen models were overpriced, and this unit has a capacitive screen like your iPhone, not resistive like a few of the name brands. After removing everything out of the box (there should have been a soft protective sleeve or bag in the box so when you remove the screen when parked it won't get scratched or damaged), the main unit itself is the typical shallow mount digital deck, the unmounted front face looks low cost with cheap black plastic (which might work in your favor, who would steal it?), but it's hidden once you mount the screen. All the rear connections are clearly and individually labeled (nice labels too), which makes for an easy install, don't like that the space between the RCA jacks and chassis is a bit narrow, have the Monster RCA cables that have a thicker outer ring and had to use short male to female adapters with the typical narrow ring, not rewiring the car to run new cables, it's not really the designers fault as they are probably to spec, but the JVC and Sony units previously installed were able to fit the fatter cables since they had more open space around the jacks. Since on this unit you can turn off the internal amp (a really great feature), would have been a plus to have the speaker wires on a separate harness instead of everything on the main harness, leave it in the box and forget about it if not needed, was just something else to cap and crimp during the install. The mic, 2 usb, and 2 camera inputs are all on separate wiring, which was great as it made it easier to route everything during install. Since I already had an aftermarket rear camera wired in, that part of the install was easy, separate power and RCA inputs for front and rear and a trigger line for reverse, don't have a front camera, so you can disable it in settings so no power goes to the line and it does not show up on the menu. The screen switches almost instantaneously to the camera when you put it in reverse and you can delay it in settings if you have an auto trans. The two USB ports are a great feature, purchased and installed at the same time as the unit a dual usb adapter that replaces the lighter and now have my CarPlay usb and separate power/mp3 usb for the passenger in one place. This unit also has dual mono RCA sub outputs, good to have if you are running multiple subs/amps or plan to upgrade in the future, I'm just using one at this time. On to the software, on first power up, you get the legal/EULA screen, that can be disabled in the settings, so on subsequent power up it just shows the SSL logo before the main menu, Boot up from SSL logo to main menu takes a few seconds. Another feature is being able to delay power off, when I crank my car to start, the radio powers down for a second, always disliked that, you are able to delay power down in setting for up to 3 seconds, good for the external amp as well as it does not cycle on/off upon loss of signal. Main menu is typical for CarPlay/Android Auto main screens, it's nice that there is separate "button" for EQ settings on there and for the cameras, have not played video via usb thumb drive (yet) or used bluetooth as I use CarPlay, so can't comment on those functions, maybe if I revise the review. The touch "buttons" on the bottom of the screen, home, siri/mic, mode and band always worked on first touch, also you can change the color to match or contrast the dash lights. Radio reception is fine, don't listen to a lot of radio, but the local stations I preset seem to come in ok. As for CarPlay, works well, no notable difference from the OEM one in my other car, had the mic from the previous unit already mounted and did not want to pull the panel to re-run the wire, so I reused it, once I adjusted volume levels in settings it was fine hearing my caller and speaking to them. Now for sound, had to re-adjust my amp as sound out of the box was flatter than my old unit, once I did that and adjusted the EQ and sub in the unit settings, it's somewhat comparable in sound quality to the JVC and Sony decks that I had in the car previously with the same speakers and amp. All in all, it's an good unit quality wise so far, especially and because of the price, and I've spent more on decks that had less features, I was slightly hesitant on getting the Sound Storm brand at first, but I would recommend this deck. It looks great and sounds good with an external amp, software lagged once or twice when switching from CarPlay to setting or radio. Screen is very bright even at the lowest setting at night, wondering if there will be any software/firmware updates in the future to add a bit of polish to the UI, adjust screen brightness even further or add/adjust features like time delay, but I really can't complain, everything works so far. ... show more

  • So far, not so good
Style: 9 inch
Well, my unit came out of the box with a few problems. 1st was that the display settings reset every time it loses accessory power. I know it is wired correctly because every other setting is retained when cycling the key. When you completely unplug the connector to the unit or disconnect the battery on the car, you lose ALL settings. So it's undoubtedly a malfunction of the unit itself - more on this later. Unfortunately I kept the unit for 2 weeks before getting time to install it, and it was cloudy for a week or so afterward so the lowest brightness was fine. I'll come back to why I mentioned this. Then on the 1st sunny day I set the day brightness to where I could see it, got to my destination, and turned off the car. I turned it back on an hour later and it was fully dim again. I couldn't see it at all to turn the brightness up again. I thought the backlight was completely dead. Thinking maybe I didn't hit "Apply" or something, I figured I was being crazy. I got to my garage where I could see the display again and tinkered a while before coming to the conclusion there is nothing like this in the settings. It just doesn't retain this whole menu's settings after losing voltage on the red wire. SSL/Boss support told me this was indeed not normal and offered a replacement. So far so good... but that's where the good ended. Remember when I said I had to wait a while before the problems surfaced? This placed it outside the amazon return period. This means amazon is removed from the RMA process completely. SSL/Boss wanted me to FILM a youtube video showing bench tests performed with a meter to show the yellow/constant 12v wire has voltage at all times. Remember where I said unplugging the unit from the vehicle or disconnecting the battery terminals caused ALL settings to be lost? Clearly they are volatile... This obvious troubleshooting I did negates the necessity for the test and I explained this to them. However they are pushing to require I do this in order to continue with the RMA. They are not listening to me when I tell them this makes no sense to force me to do this. I tried calling into their support number and asking what the heck, but the guy on the phone said they don't talk to those guys so he doesn't know anything. Super convenient for him, right? I believe SSL is doing this completely to stall and hope I give up instead of asking for a new unit that might work properly. Since reporting this issue, my steering wheel controls are now no longer working. The SWC module from PAC always reports an error when communicating with the head unit. I have a spare PAC and tried it too. Same thing. And android auto started to randomly disconnect last week. I tried with another phone and cable. Still happens. So this unit at first appeared to be a somewhat solid deal if everything worked as advertised. Clearly I'm not alone in thinking this. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case, at least for me anyway. Did I also mention they require you to pay shipping costs to get your replacement unit and they require tracking and insurance? So you have a product you paid extra for so that it would contain a warranty you presume is legitimate. When the unit fails and you have to RMA it, YOU pay shipping. Maybe I'm just being spoiled because Amazon has done this to us with how great the support is as a prime member, but this feels like really crap service to me. I know stereos are in short supply. I KNOW it's a pain to have to wait for the more reputable brands to be able to continue their production, but learn from my mistakes. Wait it out. You won't be disappointed. Supposedly the chip shortage has ended and they are re-entering circulation. This means you can buy good stereos from real companies that don't do this to their customers like Boss/SSL does, hopefully soon! UPDATE: FINALLY Boss/SSL got back to me on this issue. Adding a star for them making some kind of an effort. We shall see what happens.... UPDATE 2: they charged me 430 dollars to send out a replacement unit and gave me 10 days to return the old one or I lose all that money. A bit unfair but okay. I was out of the country but because their support is so abysmal, I had no idea the replacement unit was sitting on my porch for 6 days. I quickly took my whole dash out again while suffering from food poisoning from airport food. The new unit had a dead screen. I told support and "please send us a picture of the unit with the screen off. You know, like if you just took a picture with the car off." I lost it and wrote the worst email I've ever sent to anyone ever. This is the worst support ever. They only reply once a day. I don't know if I can return the new one in the next 24 hours or not but I don't want to be charged all this money. This has been a huge embarrassment. I cannot recommend you do NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT HARD ENOUGH. The support group consists of experts on stalling and generally making customers feel like they don't matter. What a piece of crap company. ... show more

  • Paired with a solid sub, this is a GREAT head unit!
Style: 10 inch
I'm very picky, and I've owned a number of top-shelf car audio systems over the years. I've also been in the camp that would NEVER install a BOSS product in my car, because they have a reputation for being trash. Having said that, I rolled the dice on the SSL SDML10ACP because it looked like exactly what I wanted. I went with the SSL version because I couldn't bear to see the BOSS logo at anything in my beautifully fully restored pride and joy open-air Jeep TJ. THIS THING ROCKS!!! Coupled with four Kicker CS Speakers and a Kicker 11HS8 sub under the driver's seat, this is hands-down the best car audio system I have ever owned for probably ever hear, even at car shows. It is perfect. Or nearly perfect, as the CarPlay is wired, rather than wireless. So I added a CarlinKit v3 wired to wireless CarPlay adapter, and that rounds it out really, really well. I LOVE this system, and get lots of compliments on it. It's been reliable so far for over a year, and came with a 3 year warranty. I would have been happy paying a much higher price-tag, but at this price it is not only the best head unit of it's kind on the market, it's a remarkable value for the money as well. Yes, it's made by BOSS, but thankfully you can buy it with an SSL logo on it. :) ... show more
