Very nice fly rod and entire kit! I have fly rod and gear from top brands like Orvis including fly line and leader. When I say this entire kit does not disappoint, I mean it does not disappoint! I was skeptical of the line that came with it, but as you can see in the pics it’s catching blue gill, bass, crappie and more (salt water coming soon)! The line floats very well, without any treatment! The casting is smooth with very good distance. The line lands pretty gently on the water and I haven’t had any issues from the reel whatsoever. This is my 2nd fishing rod from this brand, I initially got the collapsible plus this fly rod as rods to teach others how to fish…intending them to be disposable. Turns out they’re very well made, stylish and very functional so they’re my new favorite and best kept secret! If you’re just starting out or a pro I highly recommend this kit and brand to add to your fishing arsenal. If you’re just starting to fly fish, this is without a doubt you’re go-to setup. Buy this first before you wrack your brain deciding which expensive combination to go with, you’ll love your purchase and your decision. Every rod/reel/line/flies you get in the future will have to need surpass this before you spend your hard earned and saved up money…because you’ll see that being a fly guy/gal isn’t cheap! pretty good, this is my first ever time using or having a fly rod. i caught a few rainbows the first time using it and it worked good. the only problem i had which can probably be fixed is the reel doesnt stop spinning when i pull my line out and i dont know why, if someone could explain thatd be nice too! ... show more

not thrilled with reel. feels cheap and tinny. no tapered leader in package. line does not have welded loop. line and backer on reel is very tight fit. flys are not realistic. reel pouch is a cloth pouch, I've seen beginner combos with better pouches. no directions to change from right hand retrieve to left hand. this is my first rod. wouldn't purchase again. ... show more

I've been fly fishing for about 50 years, I bought this as a general purpose rig for my wife, who is a beginner. This is a fantastic beginner rig. The rod is a little heavy but it casts sweet, it's just effortless to cast accurately -- it'll reward good technique. I've always thought of fly fishing reels as glorified line holders, this is a *really* nice, lightweight line holders with a drag that works. The line will be fine for your first season. The flies aren't very helpful but the box will be handy. All in all a great value. UPDATE: We've had the rod for a year now. I should give it 6 stars for durability, it's still like new. We've caught some darn nice fish, it's a good lake rod. For stream fishing, it's starting to hold wifey back a little, due to weight and recovery (it's actually not *that* accurate, come to find out), so she is getting a new rod. I'm keeping this one because it's a GREAT bass rod. I think I'll over-line it, prob true 6 or a heavy 5 (the line is comes with is pretty basic). Catch me some fish by gum. The reel is fine, there's not much to fly reels for most freshwater fishing scenarios; long as you're not trying to haul in a San Juan piggie on a 6x leader it's fine. Set the drag barely tight enough to where you don't get a squirrel nest every time you strip the line and it'll serve. I'm still gonna give it 5 stars cuz this rig does what it's supposed to do, and then some, for a great price. A serious trout fisherman will outgrow it fairly quickly, but we still feel it was money well spent. ... show more

We bought these rods for a fly fishing trip, used them twice and one of the rods shattered while casting. Unable to repair. The flies fell apart nearly as soon as they touched the water. We were so disappointed.
