  • Impressed me More than I thought.
So I have been in the market for something that sounds clean. Something that can fill a room in a sharp, clean way that isn't drowned in meshed up noise. For me it is hard to explain, but Bose had always seemed to fill that nitch. I had bought a set of 2 speakers and a passive woofer from Bose to try and get a taste of it at home a long while back. But it turned out it didn't carry the whole package. Having the speakers but no Bose software running in a receiver really doesn't do much for quality. Looking at Bose latest seems like they aren't into the theater realm anymore while their prices are still sky high. By this time I was in the market for creating a family space for everyone to enjoy a quality home theater experience. Boost up a little the moral around the family during these difficult times. After much internal debate about it, I decided to try out this Sony package. Well, to be honest, I have been out of the game for a while regarding special software and hardware combo. Bose to me was the only company doing it right. My focus has been elsewhere and only recently have I worked towards enhancing the house a little. How much HDMI has advanced and Dobly, which has been around for a long time but I had not been up to date regarding some of the quality changes they have made. Let me start by being an old timer here for a moment. So speaking to my elderly crew, the days of old that required special inputs and output orders for your devices is no more. HDMI has come a long way and offers a cool feature my TV labels as CEC. Which allows all CEC compatible devices to function with... 1 remote control. Makes me miss the days of labeling each controller to know what it will control. There are several HDMI inputs on the receiver with full CEC compatibility. Best of all, the TV and Receiver have eARC, and what that means is, if you have something directly connected to your TV and want audio out the audio system instead. One HDMI cable has the ability to return an audio channel without extra wires. Remember the days of using those red and white RCA cables? Only to see the future role in with optical cables shinning light not using electrical signals. Well now forget it all. Plug in your HDMI with ARC or eARC support and watch one cable do everything. The receiver handles full 4K resolution at double frame rates. Just don't forget to have an HDMI cable that can support it too. Oh, and I don't tend to read instruction manuals but do it. I was seeing the 4K FireTV wasn't streaming at 4K and I was severely confused about it. Everything was paired up to function for it. I went back and read the Receiver's manual, you have to change the input ports to use higher resolution or else it defaults to 1080p. It confused me because from the 4K Blu-ray player it played 4K resolution despite being set to a lower quality mode. But since I swapped the settings for all the inputs to 4K every bit of detail is now available and even the Blu-ray stuff had increased quality. To summarize, no more need for multiple remotes and easier device setup. One receiver handles both video and audio. Read the manual. Now to the full set of 7 speakers and a woofer. This package includes 7 speakers and 1 subwoofer. For me, as an oldie, it means it has 2 rear speakers, 2 mid speakers, 2 front speakers, a center and a low frequency speaker. What confused me most was the 2 mid speakers which don't seem to be made for the middle of the room. They are part of something Dobly calls Atmos. Here I am thinking, 5.1 sounds real good, 7.1 traditional just enhances that. What the hell is Atmos? I did a little searching and what it is intended to do is direct audio up towards the ceiling for a bounce effect, or in some cases have speakers in the ceiling produce audio downwards. The intended goal is to fill the space with multi-dimensional sound. In short, make it sound like it is elevated. I'm here thinking to myself, oh boy another marketing ploy. Not until I had everything running did I realize that the desire to hear audio fill a room was actually being fulfilled by these Atmos speakers. Something I had only experienced in live performances in special auditoriums was basically in my house now. Interestingly enough it was hitting the clear and sharp levels I had only heard from Bose systems in the past. I was incredibly surprised. Well, here's the kicker. The receiver is designed to be compatible with multiple different setups. The default setup is a traditional 7.1 arrangement. Where the extra 2 speakers are placed mid way between the front and back surround sound speakers. After reading the instruction manual I setup the speaker configuration to the proper setup. With FD Atmos speakers. I was, speechless by that point. My test film had a scene where it was raining, I literally expected to feel the rain hitting me. I was surrounded with great, clear detail of sound. I think I have been so long out of the game the difference is a shocker. Between the fact that the receiver can handle full 4K and HDR (Dobly Vision too) and full blown Dobly Atmos or other speaker setups. Including support for dual woofer. I have nothing more to say other than holy cow the Woofer! It is an active power woofer that actually supports individual speakers directly from the woofer. It has the ability to isolate a range of frequencies to clean up the lows and independent level control. The power on that thing is massive for the room space I am using. If you're not familiar with what a shacker is, you don't need them with this massive box shacking the very soul out of you. It is big. On that note, the sizes of the speakers were a little... surprising. The towers are actually smaller than I expected, the Atmos are small too but then your center seems big for its role and the rear surround are like primary left and right speakers. They are huge for rear speakers. The woofer is big too. But the audio comes out very clean, clear and balanced. Oh, don't skip out on quality. All the wires I used, I made sure to meet the requirements for power and distance. Speaker cables tend to be dismissed by many, but they also play a major role in the quality of the sound. Am I happy with this purchase? Yes, very. Do I recommend it? Yes. I was happily surprised. ... show more

  • Perfect
I never expected sound this good in a home theater. Not only is the sound amazing, but the amp makes connecting multiple devices very simple. We have a DVD player, Roku stick, Nintendo Switch, and an Xbox all connected to the amp, with great clarity on the projector and fantastic sound all the way around! ... show more

  • Not as good as a PC 2.1 set
Unfortunately, Sony has fallen much when it comes to sound. The system requires tools and extras to set up properly. The navigation to find the features is a bit complicated. Night mode has to be my favorite but I still have to manually cut out the subwoofer. The Bluetooth will turn on when it shouldn't. Trying to connect to devices within range, not that I asked it to connect. My Klipsch 2.1 system for my PC will outperform this system which is very very sad! It's a decent system that should be much better than it is. My recommendation to Sony is a complete redesign. Get audio fans like myself to test them before sending them out. ... show more

  • Worked great until the receiver started sounding like a ticking time bomb
Very disappointed in this product! Had it for not even a week, and it started malfunctioning on us. Receiver sounded like a ticking time bomb plus speakers were popping really loud. Only good news is that we requested a refund and they said we could, so we sent it back and finally got our refund back. We had a Sony reciever and speakers for over 17 years and had nothing like what we experienced with this new Sony. Actually our old one still works fine. My suggestion is if you can go to an Electronics store, go that way vs trying to order off of Amazon. I usually don't write bad reviews and maybe it was just our luck, but as soon as it malfunctioned, I wanted it out of our house. Rarher not have a fire or it blowing up especially when we just bought a new TV! Only good thing like i said, is because we had it less than a week, they let us refund it without any questions or run arounds ... show more
