  • Great lens took fantastic photos!
Style: w/ SEL85F18/2
Shot my first studio session and I am so glad I added this lens. It's the perfect size not too bulky, perfect for portraits - takes amazingly sharp photos and so easy to switch off my Sony A7III. It got superior reviews over the GM version and I can see why - it did not disappoint.

  • Excellent portrait lens
Style: w/ SEL85F18/2
Pros: Fast auto-focus, beautiful images out off the camera, sharp even at F1.8, nice build quality, good value for money Cons: Minimal focus distance What this lens is good at: portrait photography. And it's darn good at that. 85mm is the ideal focal length for portraits. It can a bit tight for indoor use on a APC camera. But on a full-frame camera (like a Sony A7 or A9) its fine. Even at F1.8, the images are sharp and bokeh is nice. At 85mm, it's not wide enough for landscape photography. But I used it during a hike and captured some nice photos. What this lens is not good at: macro photography. I wish it had a better minimal focus distance. That would have made this a killer lens. But it's not a deal breaker. I love shooting on prime lenses. A wide angle prime to capture landscapes and a medium telephoto prime for portrait photography. I settled on the Sony 20mm F1.8 for the wide angle prime. And this 85mm F1.8 for the portrait. I love it so far. ... show more

  • Super sharp, edge to edge. Fantastic portrait and general use lens. VERY pleased!
Style: w/ SEL85F18/2
This is an AMAZING prime lens. Looks so simple, and yet is a fantastic lens for portraits, walk-around, low light, and bokeh. As others have said, I was not expecting such perfection at the price Sony put on it. It simply performs exceedingly well and produces razor-sharp images on my a7 IV. Weather-resistant with a customizable focus hold button, and lightweight for perfect mobility! The 67mm filter diameter is great due to that size being heavily used by many other lenses. Very good build quality and again...as sharp as GM lenses that cost 3-4 times as much! I couldn't be more pleased with this awesome Prime Lens. It easily and unequivocally earns a strong FIVE STAR rating from me, along with my honest and hearty recommendation. This is a lens you NEED to have in your bag! SUPERB for video and vlogging as well! *If you found my review helpful to you, PLEASE let Amazon know by clicking the "HELPFUL" button below! ... show more

  • Fun Beginner Lens for Travel and Portraits!
Style: w/ SEL85F18/2
One word: FUN! Everytime I pull this out I feel very comfortable with the handling, ease of use, quality of pictures and range. The size isn't too big or heavy. Good bokeh IMO. I'm a beginner but I truly enjoy this lens! Photo below is with Sony A6400 and no filter.

  • Low cost and exceptional value.
Style: w/ SEL85F18/2
Under $600 and it's sharp, small, lightweight, and still made of metal. Bokeh is pretty good too.

  • Worked great, until it didn't.
Style: w/ SEL85F18/2
I've had this lens for almost 4 straight years and it was a great lens for the price. Sharp, clean images, although it does have a lot of chromatic aberration especially wide open at f1.8. After several years of owning it and using it often, it recently stopped responding with both of my cameras (A6000 and the A7iv). 2 problems- The focus motor stopped working, can only be used in manual focus, and yes I double checked my camera settings and the AF switch on the lens itself. The second problem is the aperture control no longer works, this lens is now inoperable for me. It was one of my favorite lenses and I'm a bit sad that it has finally died. I'll either try to repair this myself, or buy a different lens that has a manual aperture ring, so I won't have to deal with this again. I'm still giving it 4 stars because it worked flawlessly up until recently, and at this price point, I guess that's fair. ... show more

  • Unbelievable for Portrait Photography
Style: w/ SEL85F18/2
Excellent quality. Low light applications. Very pleasing Bokeh. Light-weight, compact, and perfect for portrait photography. I can't believe that this lens sells for this low price. This lens is even great for landscape photography. I saw many YouTube reviews on this lens I did not find one negative review. I'm glad that I purchased this lens. The focus is virtually silent and very fast. This lens is a keeper. ... show more
