  • Simple Comparison of 24-70/2.8 GM and 24-105/4 - Both are amazing, but its all about the comfort
Style: Lens Only
I purchased the 24-70/2.8 GM lens first. Its heavy. Very Heavy. There is no balance with the body, and it strains my wrist to hold it. I purchased the Peak Design Clutch and that made a world of difference on the positive side. When getting ready for a family site-seeing trip, I found the camera with attached lens would not fit in my 5L camera bag. the barrel and length of the lens was too big. I put the camera and lens in a backpack, and off we went. By the end of the day, my back was sore and my arms tired. It is that heavy (or rather, it is that unbalanced as it strained my wrist). I only took a few portait shots of my family, and I noticed that I was usually at F4 or smaller. To get to 2.8, I had to manually over-ride the program setting. The photos are amazing, but the camera was so heavy that I dred using it the following day. I used my iPhone instead. This is when I learned that there is a reason why Sony offers a 24-70/2.8 GM, and a 24-105/4. Its all about the trade-off between portability and shallow depth of field. I purchased the 24-105/4 for the purpose of being a site-seeing lens. It is much lighter, and much shorter, and a smaller diameter ... it travels a lot easier by using a smaller camera bag. The weight is much more balanced, and easier on my wrist providing a lot more comfort for all-day shooting. The extra reach from the telephoto is also nice for site-seeing as many items in museums are beyond reach of a 70mm lens, but I still want that 24mm for family group shots. With this learning, here is what I am doing. The 24-70/2.8 is my portrait lens, and it will be used when i am shooting closer subjects in a darker setting of low duration. The 24-105/4 is my travel and site seeing lens. Both have a purpose. But now that I said all of this, consider the following - I also have a 85/1.4 GM that can easily replace the 24-70/2.8 for potraits, and I have the 18-35/2.8 GM lens that can replace the 24-70/2.8 GM for wide angle nature photography. In some respects, the 24-70/2.8GM lens is no longer needed and can be sold. If I was starting from scratch, I would not have purchased the 24-70/2.8 GM. One last comment - I do have the 70-200/4 lens, and love it for its lighter weight and better balance than the 70-200/2.8 GM. I realize that I loose an f-stop, but I doubt I would use a lens that is too hard on my wrist. In summary, the GM lenses are the considered the best lenses. They come at a higher price, higher weight, and longer length that reduce their portability and usability. Before thinking that only the best lens will do for you, think about ergonomics and the strength of your wrist. You might find that the best lens is the one that best serves your personal needs. ... show more

  • Great Lens
Style: Lens Only
I have a Sony A7 MkIV I use for studio still life with a nifty fifty but I wanted to use the camera on location for fun (not profit) also. I have been researching lenes for about 12 months and trying to choose between a Tamron 28 - 75, Sigma 24 - 70 and a Sony 28 - 70, and this lens. They all were reviewed as pretty decent lenses but I finally decided on this and I am really pleased that I sprung the extra for this lens. It's great and the extra focal length makes a big difference. My last travel zoom was a Sigma 24-70 on a Nikon D800 very heavy kit to lug around with you all day. This combination of the Sony A7 and this lens is much easier to carry around and the image quality so far has been superb. ... show more

  • Very flexible and ok quality
Style: Lens Only
If you want to carry only one lens and don't care too much if it's a big lens, probably you should take a look at this lens. I own several Sony lens from the G and G-Master series and can say that the glass quality of this lens is ok. Not great, not close to G-Master. The strength for this lens is really its flexibility. ... show more

Style: Lens Only
I was lucky enough to find a warehouse deal on this lens for a fairly decent discount. Did have to tax which kinda sucked. Lens came in a some what beat up box but the lens was in perfect condition. First thing I did after taking the lens out was check on Sony's website to make sure this lens was not part of the recall. I just entered the serial number on the lens to check and luckily this lens is not affect. I have been playing around with pictures around the house with my A7R2 and so far so good. Pictures are nice and sharp. Here are some PROS and Cons I have noticed so far: PROs: - Very useful focal length - Sharp images - Good features with image stabilization and manual focus button CONs: - Heavier than I thought on the A7R2 - Heavy vignetting at F4 and 24mm focal length. - Expensive (but most FF ... show more

  • SHARP lens!
Style: Lens Only
This lens is stunning! As someone who travels a lot, I need versatility without sacrificing quality and this lens fills that gap. Unless you absolutely need f2.8, this lens' f4 will be plenty for most travel needs and landscapes etc. The build quality is fantastic and feels very durable as you would expect from a Sony lens. Very smooth zoom ring and is tack sharp! This lens stays on my camera all day and I have no regrets! ... show more

  • A jewel with many facets
Style: Lens Only
In a market dominated by zoom lenses with focal lengths 14-24mm, 24-70mm, 100-400mm etc, it is refreshing to have a lens that goes from wide-angle to telephoto. Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS is gem of a lens, a zoom with a range of composition options that doesn’t underperform at any range and that can be used in a variety of shooting situations. Built-in optical stabilization in the 24-105mm makes it particularly suited for shots from (or of) moving subjects. Despite the fact that there’s built-in image stabilization, the 24-105mm is a compact and lightweight lens. The versatility of this lens, especially on landscape shoots, is hard to beat. Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS happens to be one of the rare lenses that not only is good for the enthusiast but also for the pro. ... show more

  • Excellent Everyday Walk Around Lens
Style: Lens Only
I purchased this as an all-purpose everyday lens and as a travel lens for my a7riii. It's an excellent lens, tack sharp and well constructed, Focus is quick and accurate and the inclusion of the focus-hold button is great. I really like the reach over the 24-70mm and the minimal barrel distortion is easily corrected in post. I do not find weight to be an issue, but that has never been a major factor in my lens choices, so others may feel differently. I also do not shoot video, so cannot comment on using this lens in that way. Overall, I have been very happy with the performance of this lens and would definitely recommend it! ... show more
