  • The Best Supertelephoto Lens
Style: Base
By far this is the best lens in my bag, and my bag is stuffed with grand master lenses. I rely on the exceptional autofocus, image clarity, and stabilization. What led me to write this review is this last weekend I had a gig to photograph a corporate volunteer event spread across a 77-acre cemetery and the lens saved me from needing to run around the entire lot. I've often wondered if I should have bought the 70-200 but I regularly shoot 200+ professionally and this lens always performs exceptionally. I've had this lens for almost a year and mostly use it professionally on snow cat tours and skiing excursions. Occasionally I use it for wildlife photography in my hobby time. I'm pairing this lens with a Sony a7RV, which has great autofocus capability, and compliments the autofocus technology of the lens greatly. The manual focus is incredible as well. Usually when I need this lens I don't have much time to compose a shot, and I'm always impressed with the quality I can achieve in a quick transition / adjustment. This has become my favorite lens to work with. The 135mm marker is great too when I need to take family portraits. My average workflow with this lens is a lot of action shots and then a group photo, and while I still switch to a 50mm sometimes with the group photos the 100-135mm group photo at f/5 keeps the scenery and makes for a favorite shot. Also, the images are almost always in great shape when I go to post production, so my additional workload with this lens is usually minimal. 10/10 would recommend this lens, and if you're considering the 70-200 I've often found the 200-400 range is needed often enough to warrant the 100-400. ... show more

  • Why Buy the 70-200 GM When You Can Have the 100-400GM?
Style: Base
Excellent build quality. High quality construction. Not as heavy as I thought it would be, which is good. Has three assignable buttons one can use in portrait/landscape orientations. Detachable foot. Slide door on hood enabling access when wanting to adjust circular polarizing filter--all very practical. The focus ring is buttery smooth, as is the focal length adjustment ring--very good for video use. The optical image stabilization works seamlessly on my A7RIII. At 400mm, I have been able to take sharp images hand held at 1/80th of a second shutter speed. The lens is very very sharp at all focal lengths, which is why I said "Why Buy the 70-200 GM When You Can Have the 100-400GM?" If you need a telephoto zoom for portraits in low light, this is not your lens. But I feel very comfortable saying this lens would make an excellent portrait lens in studio and outdoors in good lighting. Don't forget 400mm at 5.6 isolates the subject and blows out the background just as well as 135mm or 200mm at f/2.8. No need to worry so much a HSS to get that effect, either. Have hd bad experiences with 3rd party sellers, so I bought this lens directly from Amazon services. The lens arrived in a brand new box--no scratches, no sign of ever having been opened or tampered with. Thank you Amazon. ... show more

  • Nice complement to the 200-600
Style: Base
I got this for butterflies, dragonflies, etc. Normally I use the 200-600, but it does not focus closer than 2+meters, and I was missing a lot of butterfly shots. (It is a fantastic bird lens). The 100-400 does the trick, it focuses close, and is long enough for most butterflies, etc. It also has a greater magnification . I am using this as is, hand held and no flash. Compared to the 200-600, the 100-400 is much lighter and quite a bit sharper. The autofocus is a bit slower, and more likely to need a manual assist to get in the basic range, but bird-eye etc. work fine,. Really a pleasure to use. It is also good for birds, albeit with less reach. It could be used as a lighter travel option with the 1.4 teleconverter. ... show more

  • A fabulous lens
Style: Base
While this lens is certainly expensive, its performance is stellar. Excellent contrast and sharpness across the frame at all focal lengths. AF is quick and sure. Stabilization, when using it also with a stabilized body, is amazing. I can handhold 400mm at 1/8 second. I bought it primarily to use for a video documentary that I will be shooting. It can be used on a good video tripod with stabilization, which is important for me. It cannot compensate for the small and quick vibrations of a light tripod (which is why it is suggested to switch off stabilization when using a tripod), but the stabilization works well with a heavier tripod. ... show more

  • Great Lens!
My 100-400 lens arrived undamaged and on the day it was supposed to be delivered. It has quickly become my favorite lens in my bag. Image quality is amazing and using it in conjunction with my A7RV camera I was able to quickly focus on a dragonfly mid-flight from about 25 yards and snap off a few great photos. ... show more

  • My favorite lens, it's super sharp with an excellent range, not just wildlife and sports
Style: Base
I am smitten with this lens. Excellent range, super sharp, super fast autofocus. I couldn't ask for more. It's turning out to be the lens that is on my cameras the most by the results I'm getting from it. I've attached 8 photos that show a diverse range of awesome shots I've been able to land with it just in the last 2 months. The images are so crispy edge to edge. My only small qualm with the lens is that the bokeh can look kind of onion-ringy and busy in certain lighting like in the pelican shot i've included. All-in-all I consider this a must by for anyone that needs this range. ... show more

  • A superb lens for Landscape and Wildlife
Style: Base
I was debating between the Sigma and Sony 100 - 400 mm lenses. Even though this is pricier I decided to go with the Sony G Master for few reasons. Its built quality is better than the Sigma and the GM lens focuses faster compared to sigma (again this is from my personal trial and test - I am not claiming I am an expert in testing lense). The image and color rendition is superb. Paring with the Sony 16-35 F2.8 GM I am set for all my Landscapes and Wildlife photography. I will certainly recommend this lens to any Sony Mirrorless APSC or FF users. ... show more
