  • Expensive converter, but worth it compared to buying new lenses
I'd purchased this for use with the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM lens as well as a FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G lens. This 1.4x converter works magic to make the 70-200mm GM lens zoomier while maintaining its sharpness, making it an effective 100-300mm lens. With my 200-600mm lens, it doesn't do so well, and reduces sharpness more noticeably with that lens. I also own the 2.0x converter, and oddly enough, that converter works very well with the 200-600mm lens, and not so well with the 70-200mm lens. Go figure! I do not own, nor have I tested with the FE 100-400mm F4.5–5.6 GM lens. Regardless, this 1.4x teleconverter will help you get more reach out of your lens without sacrificing a great deal of image quality. ... show more

  • Way less detail than I was hoping for
After using teleconverters years ago and not really liking them, I decided to give this a try with my Sony 100-400 because of all the great reviews. I used it with both my A7iii and my A6600, and like before I was not really impressed. Between the loss of light, that results in a higher ISO, and the added softness, I could get a better picture with out the teleconverter and just cropping it. I did many side by side comparisons with the teleconverter and without. Every single time the pictures with the teleconverter were way less detailed. Unless I had a bad copy of this, I can't understand all the great reviews, especially at the price. ... show more

  • Perfect addition for bird photography
Birds are small and it is hard to get close to them. I have the Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS Super Telephoto Zoom Lens and it is still a challenge to fill the frame with my subject when I go birding. Adding this tele-converter gives me a maximum zoom of 840 mm with a loss of only one f-stop. I now use my lens with this unit attached most of the time. The extender is very compact so you don't even notice it when it is installed and all of the lens functions operate normally. My A7-R3 camera body even records in the image meta-date that the extender is in use. The bad news is that the Sony extenders were designed to work with only a couple of the Sony telephoto lenses, so make sure that the lens that you have can be used with this extender. The good news is that since the compatible lenses were designed to go with the extender, there is practically no impact on image quality. The extender is not cheap, but you are getting a top quality piece of equipment and I put this in my "must have" category. Sony does make a 2x converter, but that unit costs you two f-stops, which is more than I wanted to loss. ... show more

  • Exceeded Expectations
As a former Canon user, I was reluctant to purchase Sony teleconverters for fear my results would be similar to my Canon EF 1.4x and 2x converters, which seemed only ever to produce satisfactory (and marginally at that) results on a 300mm 2.8 vii lens. I can happily report that the Sony teleconverters (both 1.4x and 2x) produce stunning results - understanding, of course, their inherent limitations. The 1.4x works fabulously on both my A9 and A7Riv; the 2x really cannot be used with the high resolution A7, but produces excellent results with the A9. Keeper rates with birds-in-flight are reduced by about 40%, but that is the price of a 1200mm focal length when using with the Sony 200-600mm zoom lens. The Canon would yield nothing but blur with any zoom lens, so I'm quite happy with the results coming from both the 1.4x and 2x converters. I gulp a bit when I write this (because these are terribly expensive), but they are worth every penny if you shoot wildlife, especially birds. ... show more

  • Pricey but very good
Using this TC with my Sony FE 70-200 and 200-600 and very impressed with the results. In the past I've had pretty poor luck using TC's on anything due to loss of image quality. This TC seems to have little, if any, effect on image quality. Using on Sony A1 and A7R3. It works amazingly well on the A1. ... show more

  • Getting crisp photos really takes work
I have been able to get decent focus on still objects using a tripod, but am still struggling getting crisp photos of birds in flight. Even set up for a broader depth of field, distant birds in flight just do not come out crisp. Maybe it is user error? I will keep trying! The more I practice the better the results seem to be. I find that beyond 100 yards or so, I really struggle to get perfect focus. ... show more

  • Adds a extra reach to the FE 100-400MM Lens
The 1.4X teleconverter works quite well and I use it together with my FE 100-400MM zoom lens. On the 400 it increases my reach to 560MM with just ~1 stop of light loss. I don't see any other issues such as reduction of sharpness etc. it seems the only drawback is a bit less light. I did notice one drawback, not all of the features of the camera are totally compatible with the 1.4X tele. For example you can use focus peaking in manual focus but the in focus zoom mode does not function so it's a little harder to get the shot sometimes. All in all this is the perfect companion for the FE 100-400MM lens for your sony. BTW my camera is the Sony A7R3. ... show more

  • Absolutely essential
I bought this with my 100-400 GM. It's pricy but it makes the 100-400GM much better for wild life. Shooting wildlife at 400mm require a lot of cropping. The extra reach gives significantly better IQ than the heavy cropping. In fact the teleconverter stayed on the whole time, I rarely found I was able to shoot the wild life well at 400mm ... show more
