This camera deserves a in depth review, so here it is. Having 10 months w/the camera. (Maybe I should also preface this w/: this my 1st mirrorless camera, I'm a DSLR shooter, primarily photo's) (My quality comparisons are coming from having a Canon 70D w/Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8) My most used time with this: most footage ever recorded was from my 3 day trip on the Timberline Trail in Oregon. I came home with - 1hr 34min 44's of video. Total of 33.6GB of data. 175 video clips and about 15 photo's. Ran through the 3 batteries I took multiple times and only drained my 10,000 mah Anker to 50%, that is fantastic. Shooting only 1080p @30p 50mbps. Take that into consideration when looking at the battery life section. I purchased this camera back in February of this year, specifically for backpacking vloggitty stuff, this camera is absolutely a winner. My review is mostly based on the video side of this camera, which IMO, is this camera primary use. (Note: I do not color grade the footage, I prefer the image SOOC, with manual controls, manual white balance.) First off this camera has the ability to shoot 4K at up to 30p 100mbps. The 4K image is stellar, sharp, very detailed and color is great. This camera does have the ability to shoot S-log which has pretty incredible dynamic range. 4K does have a 5 min limit, but personally with the way I film this is a non issue. Backpacking videos require video/clips no longer than a minute. I mainly shoot 1080p at 30p 50mbps, this footage is the easiest for me personally to work with. Even the 1080p image is very clear, I like the contrast this camera produces in video. No noticeable aliasing, very apparent w/my 70D. Again I'm a photographer 1st. THINGS I LOVE: Full manual controls: I can control every setting I need to, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, WB and the ND filter, excellent. Video image quality: It's great, want an ex. Youtube: Backpacking the Timberline Trail: 40.4 Miles Build quality: This camera is mostly metal, built like a tank, protruding/telescoping lens is very delicate. 1 drop, game over. Battery life: Is a big one, not really sure which category this should go under. Really is goes under both. For me, this is not an issue. You can maybe get 20-30 min of total 1080p record time out of 1 battery. This is pretty close to what I've come to expect, which for how I use it, is excellent. On trail I would only go through about 2-3 batteries day. If i'm just going hiking I'm taking my full set-up, 10,000 mah Anker battery, 3 camera batteries (1 in the camera, 1 in my charger and 1 on standby ready to swap. Throw the battery in my camera into the charger, fresh battery in my camera, boom shooting again.) Size/Form factor: I love the size, it fits in my pa'lante packs shoulder strap pocket, will fit nicely in a coat pocket. The JPEG's: (I am a photographer who shoots RAW and edits every image. "This hurts to say I can't access these RAW files") I shoot with a Canon 70D, Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 ART and 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II and Nikon D810 w/35mm & 85mm. My version of lightroom does not open them, 10 months later this is an issue, solely on my part, I do not use CC. Will be going to CC in the near future. With that all taken in to consideration, I have the jpg's, I edit the jpg's and they look pretty good, I guess, for a jpg. I do shoot this camera RAW+JPEG so when I figure out the problem, problem determined, I can unleash the full potential of the RAW files. (NOTE: all attached images are jpg's SOOC,that I then edited in lightroom.) THINGS I DON'T LOVE: The screen: The screen itself is wonderful, ex. when vlogging w/ this camera, over time though the screen has developed a scratch line, horizontally, across the entire screen where a piece of metal sticks out. Doesn't affect camera usage but, the piece of metal serves zero function other than housing the release of the pop-up flash. Something to be aware of. The bottom of the camera: All plastic. One of the most, if not THE most, important parts of the camera, the battery door, is extremely thin, cheap and frankly crap quality. It has some play once opened, if it was in your pocket and not shut properly could snap off with ease. Take extreme caution w/ the battery door. The weight of the camera alone could snap it off. Nitpicking: The EVF, again, personally I do not use it, but could be better. The refresh rate inside in not very good, in real world use though, you will not really notice. Unless you use/coming from a higher end mirrorless. Battery life: Here's where battery life is laughable and really disappointing. If you shoot slo-mo, you shoot 4k or 1080p @120p the battery life in absolutely atrocious. You can expect a full, fresh battery to get you just maybe 10 min total record time of 4K, maybe 5-6 min of slo-mo (240p or 480p.) And 1080p @120p is much better but still probably less than 20 min. Build quality: I only mention this here, due to the delicate nature of the lens. When the lens is out, if you drop this camera, you just lost/wasted $999. Cannot stress this enough. When camera is off, folding screen tucked in and you drop it, it may survive.........once. Never dropped, I take extra care of this camera, but the potential in there Any questions? Let me know. ... show more

Absolutely no complaint about it

My wife refused to take RX1R II during her trip to Italy because it is relatively big and is not zoomable. What good is a camera if it is not getting used? So I sold that camera and bought this one, and she's so happy about it. Its almost unbelievable that Sony packed such powerful features into such a tiny body. Yes, the camera was released Oct 2016, and now (May 2018) the series is due for a new model, but it's still (almost) the best point-and-shoot camera at similar price. 1" sensor is small compared to APS-C and full frame, but is large enough considering its size. Most other point-and-shoot cameras have a larger body and even smaller sensor. The lens, when retracted, is so short that allows the camera to be fit into bags easily, but the performance is no compromise. It is equivalent to 24-70mm f/4.9-7.6 on FF, providing usable low-light performance and noticeable shallow depth-of-field effect. And can you believe that it comes with 315 phase detection AF points? That's more than many professional cameras have! AF is so fast and precise, and it's reliable for capturing fast moving objects. And 24fps shooting speed is higher than ALL APS-C and full frame cameras I'm aware of. Furthermore, they managed to put a retractable flash and viewfinder in such a small body. The viewfinder is the standard configuration for any professional camera and this camera is no exception despite of its size. In real use, this camera adds almost no weight and size to your bag. Image quality is superb. Although 20MP is not very high, every pixel is sharp. This camera is for you if any of these is true: * You want to be able to zoom through 70mm (compared to 28mm prime lens on the phone). * You want better low-light performance compared to phone. * You want some level of depth-of-field effect. * You want super fast continuous shooting speed. * You refuse to carry even smallest mirrorless camera because it's still too large for you. ... show more

This camera is the best point and shoot I have ever owned
Style: DSCRX100M5/B
Superb Quality Compact I have used this product for about one month. This camera is the best point and shoot I have ever owned. I usually shoot with a DSLR camera. I came from shooting on a full frame camera. I must say that the imaging on this camera is very good. I can't really compare it to my Canon 5D Mark III head to head. However the lens and compact camera body are very high quality for a compact. Being able to shoot at apertures from 1.8 to f11 is pretty good for a camera of this size. Having a focal range of 24-70 is limiting, but the image quality is very good. ISO range is from 100-12,800. I have not tried shooting very slow shutter speed or quick shutter speeds. I do know you are able to shoot at shutter speeds of 32,000. This camera can also shoot a very fast burst rate of 24 fps up to 150 images then starts to slow down. There is now 315 points of focus using phase detection. The autofocus is very quick at 0.5 seconds. I primarily used this camera for photography. The view finder is small, but very usable. It is able to show 2.35 million dots of resolution. I did try using the video features and I was very happy with the video quality. I used 1080p at 60 frames. I used the xavcs format utilizing the 50 MB/second data speed. I refrained from using 4K because of the 5 minute cut off. Also I do not shoot to much in 4K. The HD 1080p was more than satisfactory for me. I give this camera 5 stars because I think it is one of the best cameras of 2016 in a compact body. ... show more

I will keep it...

Review Image by Anthony F
I am a working professional photographer for over 25 years. I have had many digital cameras through out the last two decades. Most of my cameras are large, heavy and they have many parts. I also teach several workshops and classes throughout the week. One of those workshops deals with street photography. For street photography you should have a small unassuming camera. One that is quiet and non-threathening. If you don't you will miss the "decisive moment" shot. Replacing my Nikon P7800, I hope will be the RX 100 MK5. The P7800 is a small camera from the "Coolpix" collection. Its been good for the past few years. However, it is not as responsive as I would like. Slow to focus, only 12MP. limited ISO and FPS. As soon as I received the RX100 MK 5 from Amazon. Well I thought this will not work for me. Too small and the menu options were too complicated and difficult to navigate through. Its so small that I can't barely hold it for long. The on board camera buttons too small for my medium size hands. The on and off buttons are tiny. I miss turning it on many times. Well anyway you get my drift. I thought this will not work out for me. I am not going to keep it. But then I started taking photos indoor and outdoors, and the images are quite good. Sharp with good natural color tones. I took some time customizing the menu for my taste. I still have to say the menu is not intuitive for a new Sony user. There has got to be a least a 1000 pieces of content in that thing. Well it did not take long and I was a bit happier with it. Did I mention that the images are good, real good. That is what keeps bringing me back to keep it. The size is an issue. Not because its dimensions and weight but its hard to hold. Not ergonomically suited for man hands. I can easily "palm" it and hide it in my hands. I can slip it into my jacket pocket, pants, brief case. I have ordered the additional grip and more batteries. I will mentioned the negatives in a moment. In terms of use, it is fairly easy to take photos. You can use the EVF or LCD screen. I turned off all sound. Take a moment and read how to disable some of the default features which are annoying. Like the EVF, once you use it and you push back into place, well it will turn the camera off. Nonsense! Also read on how to use MR, memory recall. Its a good feature for your favorite settings. You can have several MR's. Believe it or not I will not be using the video so much. Well one reason is that it eats memory cards fast. The 4K video is limited to only 5 minutes. The other reason is that I shoot video with the Canon G40 camcorder. So I don't need the video coming out of this pocket camera. BTW, you need a SDXC card for the 4K video. Or you can shoot in MP4 video format, with almost any SD memory card. I really need this camera for street photography. I need it to focus quickly. Take a lot of FPS. It takes 24 FPS. It has one of the fastest shutters around at 1/32,000. That is not a typo 32000. That in itself is incredible. I want to quickly switch to B&W mode with one click. (that is the MR mode) A workable ISO of 12,500. Ability to switch to the optical viewfinder. Taking 20MP photos is also good for post production cropping and editing. a Zeiss-24-70mm 1.8-2.8 through out the focal length. 315 AF points for quick focus and tracking. Did I mention beautiful imagery. Cons: 1. Poor battery life. Buy at least 5 batteries. 2. I won't blame the menu system anymore, but be warned 3. Hard to hold in your hands for a longer time. 4. No separate battery charger supplied. Charges battery while inside RX 100 V-USB-chord supplied Difficult to connect charging chord to camera. Opening is very small. (Need Patience) I don't have it. 5. High cost, should be priced at least $150 lower. 6. For the beginners, its a short-paged, owners manual. 7. Go to Youtube for camera & accessory explanations 8. Don't upgrade from RX100 IV version, small difference $200 more. 9. Camera shoulder strap?- I will use the lightweight Black Rapid sling strap for smaller DSLR's. It screws to the tripod screw. Which then presents another issue. The sling strap which is attached to the tripod screw is in the way of the SD card and battery compartment. So you have unscrew the sling strap to replace SD and or batteries. 10. Lastly, why can't Sony the innovator of all things technical for DSLR come up with a longer lasting battery. These Sony batteries are $40 each. They last about 250 shots, 10-15 minutes in video use. I am sure that they will sell more batteries, but come on its 2017, lets work on a better battery folks. ... show more

Avoid - Not worth it
Style: DSCRX100M5/B
4k video - you get about 3 minutes until the camera turns off due to overheat Slo-motion video - you only get about 4 seconds of footage x whatever speed you set = final output time. Garbage and not worth it. Shutter speed is fast yes, but dont use LED's or you can only bring it up to maybe 200 speed (this was my experience) Buttons are small for a normal size hand, menu is horrible. Camera is worth maybe 200 bucks tops, Pictures are ok, my 10 year old DSLR is much better. Im no expert, but I know how to use a camera, and what 1k worth of equipment is, this is definitely not. They should specify the amount of slo mo video time you get (plus the painstaking "rendering" it has to do after the 4 seconds you shoot) and the fact that it cant handle more than 3 minutes of 4k video. I was using a 64gb U3 card. - basically, the description is all wrong for this camera. ... show more

Carl Zeiss makes the best lenses, AND, Sony makes Nikon Dslr sensors, but, saves the most advanced sensor technology for itself (D850 is a notable exception, Panasonic derivative company made its sensor- source: Theoria Apophasis). You see where I am going with this. I have only tested the camera for stills so far. I have watched most YouTube reviews, all had great ratings including 4K and ultra slow motion(>900 frames/second!!!!!) EXCEPT 4K video time limit of less than 5 minutes and overheating issues. Consider this little camera as a dslr with a fixed zoom lens. Incredible sharp images at 24 mm focal length with mind blowing low light performance and autofocus speed. It loses its charm above 50 mm. But is does not bother me as I love 24 mm (23-24 mm is a sweet spot that even the hot seller Fuji xf100 carries). The only reason I am going to keep my D7100 is because I would like to use my telephoto lenses occasionally. You will not regret buying it. You can search that RX100 iii and iv are just about 100-200 dollars cheaper, and even if mark vi rolls out, you are unlikely to lose more than 100-200 dollars if you sell mark V to upgrade to VI. Pros: - small body: you don’t have to miss your next ufo sighting or supernova explosion or any other rare/precious moment ever - sharp as heck at 24-40s mm, uses every pixel to my eyes in this range - bokeh magic for subjects up-close(see the pictures) - macro capability: focusing distance about 5 cm at 24 mm focal length - automatic mode incredible: I can actually rely on it for most still shots - great user interface: dslr like functionality in manual mode, focal length, shutter speed and iso adjustments( after custom assignment of iso to a back camera button that is easy peasy) Cons: - although small, it is dense. More “Jacketable” than “pocketable” - not sharp at maximum focal length. This is expected of zoom lenses(compared to fixed focal length or “prime” lenses), unless you are going for >1500 dollar lenses on full frame dslrs - copying forward from other reviews from various sources: poor battery life(220 pictures), overheating when shooting 4K within 5 minutes : buy a bunch of extra batteries(37 bucks per battery + 32 bucks for external charger) and short battery life won’t be a problem anymore. Bottomline: if you are still not convinced to buy it, watch theoria apophasis(A strong Sony critique) on YouTube reviewing Sony RX 100 iii, and going Gaga over it. RX100 V is definitely a more upgraded version. ... show more

In spite of it all ...
Style: DSCRX100M5/B
Pretty much what the reviews said. Lens sharp as a tack, but wish it went to 90mm equivalent. Viewfinder is adequate for when I really need one, which is mostly when I'm in a darkened room and I don't want my face lit up like I'm holding a candle. The controls are daunting and the vocabulary and some common functions are odd for digital cameras. For example, you have to erase images by days. To erase them all you have to format the card (at least as far as I've found.) Instructions are sometimes vague and incomplete. Seems to be more at home with Mac computers than PCs. The camera was also released before major software titles were ready. Lightroom caught up 6 weeks after I got the camera. Sony needs to collaborate better with mainstream software. The stuff they "ship" with it is a crazy idea ... like I'm going to use different software for this pocket camera than I am for my Canon images (NOT!). It is, by the way, NOT a shirt or pants pocket camera. It's too thick and heavy for that. But it's a perfect coat pocket or fanny pack camera. Oh yeah. One other irritation. It comes with a couple of string adapters to which you can attach a neck strap, which the instructions say is "sold separately." Good luck finding where it is sold separately. I had to settle for a brown polka dot thing I found on Amazon. Why did they include the string adapters and no strap -- especially when no branded matching strap is available. Irritating details, but a great little camera that takes very sharp images. ... show more

To Good To Be True.
Style: DSCRX100M5/B
First, know I am coming from using a Canon g7x (canon's equal line to the Rx100) My husband and I are daily vloggers and so we used this every day and had it since release date and only recently returned it as of a week ago. It started out as a pain in because the interface really is not user friendly. Simplification would be appreciated in settings. So after finally figuring out the best settings for movie mode, here are my thoughts. Auto-Focus - Seriously, amazing (at first). This beats out Canon by far. I was shocked at how fast this thing was. But, after a couple weeks of use it started to not perform as well. Start Up Time - it takes FOREVER. Sometimes you need to capture moments as quickly as possible. If you have kids like us, they don't do those cute moments for long. We missed many because of the start up time. Quality - the quality was great at first. Seriously, I loved it! But, as with the auto-focus, after a few weeks the quality slowly declined to the point that I was ashamed to even post any content. Low Light Issues - right off the bat, this camera just does not have the low light capabilities of Canon. But, the biggest issue was there was a lag. I had to set the camera to shutter priority and manually change it for each setting to stop this from happening. Whenever shutter priority was set to auto, it would drop it too low and it would lag big time and this of course would show on the actually footage. The sad part was the low light it had issues with wasn't even really low light. It lagged in my in-laws basement with it fully lit. Over-Heating - I have seen reviewers in past mention that Sony has issues with over heating. I didn't experience it at first, but after a couple weeks sure enough, it would over heat after only 10-15 minutes of use. I understand point and shoots aren't typically used for that long period of time. But this is a $1000 camera 🤔 Quality of Hardware - I have to say I am surprised by the quality of the camera body. I am of coming from a g7x and the Sony is a much cheaper material. The biggest difference is in the arm to flip up the screen. I felt like I would break the Sony every time I tried to move it. In fact it fell maybe a foot onto carpet and the arm to pivot the screen dented and I no longer could close my screen all the way. This camera would probably do well if you are only using it every once in a while. But, let's be honest - someone who spends $1000 on a point and shoot is not looking into this camera to just "use every so often." I can buy a canon 70d and several other great DSLR's for this price or less. The quality and way it performs just is not acceptable. I wish Canon and Sony would share secrets (I know wishful thinking). Between the two of them, they have the ability to create the PERFECT point and shoot. Canon's g7x longevity, quality materials, and low light performance; Sony's FPS capabilities and autofocus performance. Then blend the two video qualities together - really Sony just needs to crisp up a bit like Canon...and bam. We would have the perfect camera. As much as the canon g7x AF issues drive me crazy, the Sony just isn't meant to last and for that price tag...it's a huge disappointment. So back to Canon we go. My husband said he felt like the Sony was too good to be true when we first got it...and he was right 😕 ... show more
