  • Fantastic upgrade from a Sony Bravia 4K LCD TV
Size: 55 inch
This 55" Sony Bravia XR8B OLED TV replaces a nearly 10 year old 55" 4K LCD TV that we have moved to another room. My has technology change a lot since then. I'm not going to regurgitate all of this TV's specs here as they can be found fairly easily in the Amazon product listing or on Sony's web site. Interestingly, the same sized 55" LCD TV weighed 38.2 lbs and the XR8B 37.7 lbs. While the new TV is slimmer and has smaller bezels the weight has not changed much. These numbers are without the stand for wall mounting. Out of the box the TV is very poorly set up. Brightness is set to max and colors are off. I used a number of YouTube videos to help perform a self calibration that significantly lowered the brightness and changed color settings. What the previous TV did not offer was HDR. The XR8B does, and what a difference both OLED and HDR make in terms of overall picture quality. To me that is real reason to finally buy into OLED, whose prices have come down significantly over the past few years. The overall brightness level is higher while the dark areas are darker. The TV picture has never been more crisp and 3D like. The XR8B comes with covers for the back to cover up the cable ports area and the unused and exposed TV stand openings. Using them results in a very clean looking backside that helps keep dust away from the ports. I mounted the new TV onto the same wall mount the previous TV was mounted to, and just reused the screws that were already pre-screwed into the back of the TV. Installing the new TV was a breeze. The included Google TV environment is pretty good. However, we use Apple TVs in our house so after configuring network and enabling HDR I didn't really reference the Google TV aspect of the TV after that. The integration with Apple TV and our A/V receiver works great. A single HDMI connection to the eARC/ARC HDMI part is all that is required for all our content sources to work with the XR8B. With the Apple TV set up to 4K@60Hz with HDR the picture is just wonderful, better than we have ever had in the house. The second most used device with this TV is a Sony PS5. Gaming takes on a new dimension, almost literally, with games that support HDR. And those that don't look a lot better than before. The TV remote is small but functional. We don't really need it other than to get into the setup menu because the combination of Apple TV remote and A/V receiver remote can control everything else. The remote has a spotted finish which makes it look like it is always dusty. Not sure what Sony was thinking there. Surprisingly the sound out of this TV is not too bad as far as thin TVs go, definitely better than the sound quality from the previous TV. That said I still would not wish the built-in speakers on anyone if it is possible to hook up a decent sound bar or audio system. I set the audio to external system, through the HDMI connection, and left it at that. Overall this TV is just what I expected. It is a huge improvement overall the TV it replaces. ... show more

  • Stunning Picture, Thoughtful Design and Powerful Features
Size: 55 inch
The media could not be loaded. I’ve had the Sony 55" OLED BRAVIA XR8B for a little while now, and I have to say, it really changes how you watch TV. First impression: the screen is gorgeous. The OLED panel delivers blacks that are truly deep, and colors feel vivid without ever looking oversaturated. Watching HDR content with Dolby Vision is a treat; the detail in shadows and highlights is noticeable even in a well lit room, and every scene feels dynamic and alive. Setting it up takes a little planning, mainly because this is not a lightweight TV. It’s medium-heavy, so having two people lift it safely is a must. The included stand legs are well designed, offering two height positions that can either sit near the edges or closer to the center. This makes it flexible depending on your furniture setup. If you prefer a wall mount, the TV comes ready with the screws and mounting points, which is convenient. Connectivity is excellent. There are four HDMI ports, all supporting 4K. Two of them are standard 4K ports, and the other two handle 4K at 120Hz, perfect for gaming on a PS5 or high refresh setups. It’s nice not having to juggle cables or compromises depending on what device you’re using. The ports are easy to reach, and the cable management feels thoughtful. The software side is smooth as well. It runs Google TV by default, which makes discovering apps and content simple and intuitive. I also appreciated that you don’t have to sign into Google TV immediately you can use it with a limited set of default apps if you prefer a more minimal setup. Switching between apps and inputs feels snappy, and navigation is responsive, which is always a pleasant surprise for a smart TV. One of the standout features for me was how easy it was to connect to over the air TV. I set it up with digital channels, and it picked up 55 channels without any fuss. The clarity and color accuracy on broadcast TV were noticeably better than my old LED set. Even in bright rooms, the picture remains crisp, and the contrast is excellent, which makes regular TV feel upgraded. Sound wise, it’s also solid. The speakers are built into the TV, and for most regular viewing, they deliver clear dialogue and decent depth. While I’d still pair it with a soundbar for movie nights or gaming, it’s good to know you don’t absolutely need external speakers for casual watching. Dialogue is easy to understand, and action scenes feel immersive enough without distortion. Overall, this Sony BRAVIA XR8B hits the sweet spot between size, performance, and thoughtful engineering. From picture quality to connectivity, from design flexibility to user-friendly software, it handles everything I’ve thrown at it from digital TV to streaming, and even PS5 gaming. It’s the kind of TV that immediately makes your living room feel like a cinema, and it’s definitely worth the effort to set it up properly. ... show more
