  • Gets hot and is easy to use
This was purchased to work on the rail and electrical routing on a model train layout. The temperature is easy to adjust and read digitally. This allows for a variety of soldering tasks. Also, a plus the machine will go into sleep mode if not used for 10 minutes. The machine comes with a handy wheel to place solder and can be placed away from the actual machine. The wand is light weight, easy to hold, and came with extra tips and sponges. ... show more

  • Poor design and packing choices
This product has some pretty nice features, but the team made some very poor design and packing choices. 1) As others have said, the loose holder leaves much to be desired. The back plastic will be melting. I'm probably going to throw in some sheet metal of my own to address the issue. 2) Some parts were running free in the box when I opened it. The bags were not previously opened, but just had no seal. The screws to attach the solder holder were missing in the jumble, but I eventually found them in a large bag. A simple small ziploc bag got two screws would have been the right choice, just as was used for the tips. Now, for the good. Very nice unit function-wise, which is what led me to choose it. Very nice light action and tip selection. Temperature control and power are great. The dings above are minor, but should be easy for the manufacturer to correct going forward. ... show more

  • Beware the stiff cord to the iron
For a beginner, having temperature control really helps. Just watch out for the cord to the iron, which is pretty short, and it is incredibly stiff. This is made worse by the fact that the iron holder is attached to the controller, so you have to position both right next to where you're soldering. I've had this for 3 years, and just put up with it...until yesterday. As I was using it on a small project, I put the iron back in the holder. The stiff cord was probably a little twisted, and of course like most modern irons the "wand" itself is very light. Hence the wire twisted the iron in the holder and the tip embedded itself in the side of the plastic. Luckily I smelled the melted plastic and switched it off before it caught fire. When I went to remove the iron from the holder it was stuck. I tried to gently pry it away, but the handle broke off. Overall reasonable design and features, ruined by use of cheap materials, especially the cord. ... show more

  • Station works well
UPDATE 10/13/20: I recently purchased genuine Hakko T18 tips for this station and one other soldering iron, and I'm glad to say they fit and work perfectly. So both 900M series tips and genuine Hakko T18 tips will fit. The only difference between 900M and T18 tips is the overall width of the shank. T18 shanks are roughly 1.5 to 3 tenths of a mm wider (a few thousandth of an inch), it depends on how much undersize the cheap tips are when you compare them. The 4mm hole on the cheap tips aren't all drilled to the same depth, so some will sit directly on the steel shaft that protrudes from the handle of the iron and surrounds the ceramic heater and some do not, leaving a small gap between the shank of the tip and the steel shaft. The Hakko tips leave a very small (paper thin) gap and sit directly on the tip of the ceramic heater, so don't over tighten the steel sleeve that holds the tip in place. Even when there's a gap with the cheaper tips you should not overtighten the sleeve, you risk breaking the ceramic heater. Just firmly finger tighten. Here's the link to the Hakko tips that I use. https://www.amazon.com/Hakko-Chisel-T18-D08-Model-Japan/dp/B013WII72Y/ref=pd_ybh_a_8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=DGE6JP5H2VSZ06GX4TAB The photo shows how well it does on PVC coated 16 and 12 gauge stranded copper wire. And these were soldered using an inexpensive 900M 5.2mm chisel tip (I forgot to switch back to the Hakko tip), but it really wasn't needed as this tip works well at transferring heat very quickly on heavy gauge wire. Large work, large tip! I set the iron at 350C and kept the tip underneath the wire through the whole process while feeding the Kester 60/40 solder on top of the wire. I did create a heat bridge at the very start by feeding a little solder directly to the tip to accelerate the heat transfer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm only a light to moderate user of the station. The iron heats pretty quickly to 500 degrees F. The base is very stable since the iron holder is attached. It holds the iron securely and the included curly brass tip cleaner, though a little small, works well. Its better for the tips because there is no thermal shock like you get from the damp sponge. It takes standard 900M series tips, so if you need replacements or additional shapes and sizes, they are easily found right here on Amazon. It handled 12 gauge stranded wire with ease, with the temperature set at 600 degrees F. Be sure to coat your tip with solder when you are finished to prevent oxidation. The included lead free solder even worked well, but I normally use Kester 60/40 or 63/37 rosin core solder. I did not use the solder remover tool. I would use my solder wick instead. If I have anything to add, I will update my review. ... show more
