2024-05-01. Solar garden lights by NESSTU. Sunflower. 3 lights per stem. 3 stem pack. Waterproof. Auto on/off. In a world where sustainable development goals are becoming increasingly more popular, it's no surprise to see more and more devices turning to being powered by renewable energy sources. From Global Warming to improving Public Health, we can all benefit from the transition of fossil fuels to renewable energy. Due to its flexibility and affordability, solar power has fast become the most popular form of renewable power. But what technologies are there to solar energy? I'm sure we're all familiar with the concept, but how does it work? Well, solar power is broadly considered to come in two guises: Solar Thermal and Solar Photovoltaic (PV) technology. At it's simplest, Solar Thermal energy harnesses heat, whereas Solar PV converts light to energy. This distinction is important because it directly affects a devices performance. If you live in a hot climate all year round, solar thermal panels will be very effective at charging your device. However, if you live in a seasonal climate, solar PV will be more suitable as the seasons change. Non-tropical rainy climates will also benefit more from solar PV devices as any light (not necessarily sunlight) will work with solar PV. Solar thermal will still work in cold climates provided direct sunlight still provides some heat. With all that said, I live in the Northern Midwest, and we most certainly get cold snowy winters. Unfortunately for me, these solar sunflower lights are equipped with solar heat technology as it subtly states that it harnesses the power of the sun. Understandable, solar heat technology is cheaper than solar PV so it will help keep the manufacturers cost down. All this means for me is that I will need to bring them in for the winter. These sunflower lights are activated by light sensors, so they'll automatically come on a dusk and turn off at dawn. These are also rated IP65. IP stands for Ingress Protection and an IP rating is standardized and officially given to a product that undergoes special testing by a certified, independent company. An IP rating consists of four positions. The first two is simply IP and is followed by two numeric digits. The first digit (3rd position) ranges from 0-6 and represents protection from solids. The 2nd digit (4th position) ranges from 0-9 and represents how well it's protected from water. The ratings are as follows: Protection from solids (0-6) 0: The product is not protected against any physical contact or objects. 1: Only protected from objects larger than 50 mm. You won’t accidentally stick your hand into this product, but you can still easily get, say, your finger in. 2: Protected from any object larger than 12.5 mm. This now includes fingers. 3: Protected from things above 2.5 mm, which includes most tools and thick wires. 4: Protected from anything bigger than 1 mm. 5: Dust resistant. Some dust may get through, but it won’t be enough to damage the product. 6: This product is fully dust tight. Protection from Water (0-9) 0: The product offers no protection from water. 1: Can resist water that drips vertically onto the product. 2: Can resist water that hits the product at a 15° angle or less. 3: Can take water sprays of up to 60°. 4: Is resistant to water splashes from any direction. 5: Can resist a sustained, low-pressure water jet spray. 6: Can resist high-pressure, heavy sprays of water. 7: Can be submerged up to 1 meter in water for 30 minutes. 8: Can be submerged deeper than 1 meter. The exact depth is specified by the manufacturer. So with an IP65 rating, this unit is dust tight and can withstand low-pressure water jet sprays. While this may sound like a great thing, it comes at a cost. Dust proof usually also means the interior is not accessible which means the rechargeable battery may not be replaceable. Once the life of the battery is spent, you will need to recycle or dispose of the product. Well, you could open the unit, there are four recessed screws that are accessible with a long thin screwdriver, but you will risk damaging the seal which means the unit will no longer be dust proof in the future. Is that the end the world? Nope, not to me. I open them up all the time and replace the batteries. What have you got to lose? Dead is dead right? If you open it up and it still doesn't work, well you're no better off than before. But if fresh rechargeable batteries bring it back to life, then any extra years you add is life it never had. In my experience, these types of solar lights are typically good for 3-5 years before they look too weathered (by sun exposure). Despite suspecting these are solar heat and not solar PV, I ordered them because of the charge time. There is a discrepancy with charge times between the product details (6hrs-8hrs) and the photos (4hrs-6hrs), but I decided it was worth the gamble. 4hrs-6hrs recharge time is my sweet spot. With my home facing east/west, they'll get enough sunlight even in the spring fall. My gamble is that the photos are correct and not the product details. Overall, I still love these sunflower lights! The details of these flowers and their leaves are impressive, quite realistic really! They blend in nicely into my garden during the day, and they light up pretty at night. There are even lights on the stems! (see pics.)

At first, I thought these looked very cheap and waited a while before putting them outside. But once they kind of relaxed and opened up, they are beautiful at night. Don’t love them as much during the day, they are ok, but really pretty at night. They hold the solar charge and stay lit all night long. Where I live, the ground is very very hard so it takes some effort to get the spike into the ground, I wish that were sharper, but if you were in a climate with more normal soil, it would not be a problem.

This pack of garden sunflowers look acceptable during the day, but they really shine at night. Assembly could be done by a child, and just make sure that the solar panel will be able to charge during the day. I love the concept but the flowers look so cheap fake and I was so disappointed. The lights weren’t the brightest either and didn’t provide much lighting. If the pack came with maybe 10, I would be more pleased because at least I’d be able to create some sort of cute floral display and walkway. For how much you pay for these…you can make your own by going to your local craft store for the same price by purchasing these same artificial flowers and a pack of fairy lights. I actually price compared and my local craft store…I was able to make 8 of these for the same price as the sale price. So either offer more with the set or drop the price down by 75%.
