  • Too much heavy not enough duty?
Style: Gardening Tool Set
Tldr: Too much heavy, not enough duty. I really think these are kinda overboard with how heavy they are to the point of impracticality. Also being carbon steel they’re higher maintenance than other materials, you you can put an edge on these if you prefer that over hori hori knives, saws, hatchets… These would be good for if you want gardening to be more of a workout than it already is. I thought “heavy duty” meant that a tool can do heavy duty work and using it will make the job easier. In this case it seems a slightly different interpretation is in order where the tool itself is very heavy and it’s a heavy duty for me to use and also makes the job harder. Hmm. I’ve been trying to finish this for a while but I can’t get over how they are. It’s actually funny how mind boggling it is to me. I racked my brain over what these were made for. Like what is the environment/situation where extremely heavy carbon steel hand tools are perfect for the job? In comparison to hand tools made out of basically any other material that are lighter but just as strong can accomplish the same thing? This is who I conjured up: gardener whose other favorite activities include rock climbing and/or weight lifting and is extremely dedicated to maintaining and training their grip strength and wrist conditioning. They also cook with thick walnut cutting boards, giant cleavers, and cast iron pots and pans so they can continue to strengthen their wrists and hands in the kitchen. Okay well to be fair I have a lot in common with that hypothetical gardener except I don’t want to use heavy things just for the sake of them being heavy. Heavy is not always better. Like if a hand tool is very heavy then you will get tired out faster and have to rest more whereas if your tool was lighter you could work for longer. I say this as someone who used small hand tools and removed couch grass from dry (it was summer), rocky, clay, PNW soil from FIVE 10x10 areas last year. Not at the same time lol they each took days to clear. I couldn’t use larger tools because of all the rocks and we have a lot of nuisance tree roots from a neighbor. These are heavy duty alright, emphasis on HEAVY. Too heavy. They’re so heavy they broke out of their restraints lol. You will be working out your hands and wrists and arms using these for any normal length of time digging around in your garden. If you have issues with grip, dexterity, weakness, joint pain, etc. I don’t think these will help. Even for able bodied people these will be challenging. It might be good to think of these as hand tool shaped dumbells. When I think about them that it helps me reframe that the workout isn’t going to be coming from digging in the bed and moving soil it’s going to come from using the tools and accomplishing a questionable amount of gardening. Since these are carbon steel I have to be more thorough with drying these off and keeping them dry after every use. I use camellia oil on my bladed tools so I give these a wipe with that too. You can use any food safe oil really though like coconut oil. It’s just to give them an occlusive barrier to prevent rust. But they better be 100% dry or else you’ll seal moisture in and that would be counterproductive. These are the heaviest hand tools I’ve ever used, and that’s not exactly a good thing. At first I thought oh wow that’s so cool these will probably make it super easy to weed and get through mats of roots and spread mulch or compost. But they’re like tiny shovels that weigh the same as regular shovels but can only do 5% of the work because they’re so small and also because I get tired after 5 seconds. Of course if you keep at it you’ll build up strength but is this really necessary… ... show more

  • Well made / rustic design
Style: Triangle Garden Hoe
Love it very well put together, have not beat the hell out of it in the garden yet but have put pressure on it with my hands. Bought some of Thor other garden tools and same craftsmanship.
