  • This created more work than helped with clearing snow. YOU do most of the work on this.
Style: Kit (w/4-Ah Battery + Quick Charger)
This Snow Joe 24-Volt 13-Inch 4-Ah Cordless Snow Shovel is an item that I'm a little torn about reviewing, because it is a mixed bag for me. I live in the NE and we get plenty of snow events - many of which only result in a couple of inches or so, which this snow shovel is best suited for, in theory. I thought I was going to absolutely love it, and while it's not TOO bad, there's a few serious drawbacks to it that are annoying enough for me to question whether or not it's worth it over a plain ol' lightweight shovel. First off, I own a huge monster of a snow blower already that plows through 2 feet depth of snow and ice at a time, and it's a beast. That said, it's enormous and bulky and a pain to get out, start up, and maneuver around (it's really super heavy, even though it's self propelled). I was excited about this Snow Joe snow shovel because I thought maybe it would be easier than simple shoveling in smaller, narrower areas (like our walkway to our driveway, which is hard to maneuver our monstrously large snow blower over easily) or for times when we just get a lighter layer of snow. It didn't work out quite the way I thought it would, but maybe my expectations were a little high. We got a couple inches of snow a few days ago. I assembled this (which wasn't hard to do at all) and had the battery on the charger for a long, long time. It seriously took 5-6 hours for it to charge up, which is quite a while - so I don't agree with the "quick charge" claim they make on it. Once charged up, I got roughly 20 minutes out of it, give or take a couple of minutes. 5-6 hours for 20 minutes is a bit ridiculous to me, but I digress. This snow shovel is unfortunately made primarily of plastic - even the parts that revolve and do the bulk of the work - with a very small amount of metal on it. After using it a few times, it's already sort of nicking and showing signs of wear, which is concerning. To be honest, I was stunned this was mostly plastic, especially on the parts that count. This will not work well for ice at all, and it appears to get torn up rather easily - even in just a couple of inches of snow and minimal use. Yikes! For the price point of this, I expected more. WAY more. While our snow was reasonably fluffy, it was leaning towards the wet side, making it slightly heavier. As anyone who uses snow blowers know, it's a bear when snow gets too heavy and slushy, as snow blowers have a hard time picking it up and getting it out of the way effectively. This Snow Joe was no exception. Even though it was only about 2 inches deep, the snow piled up too quickly in front of it and stuck together when pushing this through, making the motor shut off every two seconds trying to get it through a small pathway. I think when it senses more than a couple of inches, it just stops - which is fine, ordinarily - but in slightly wetter snow (and not overly wet - just slightly wet), it is fairly ineffective, which is a bummer. Not only that, but the snow seemed to want to freeze and stick inside the Snow Joe, making it not want to work and weighing it down. I could not seem to knock the snow out of it, either. My back was hurting after trying to clear a small pathway - something I could have done quickly and easily with a shovel. This created more work for me in that circumstance. We had a lighter, even more fluffy snow of under an inch, and I tried this out again. It seemed to fare better in that circumstance - but is it really worth it over a regular plastic snow shovel? I dunno about anyone else, but it is just easier for me to grab our lightweight, cheap plastic snow shovel and move it out of the way before lugging and fighting this thing to attempt to clear a small amount of perfectly light, perfectly powdery, super shallow snow, relatively speaking. While it DOES work, it also seems to create more work than it purports to help with. I'm in my 40s and ended up with backaches after using this. I can't imagine someone older and/or with some health issues getting this and trying to use it with the expectation that it would make their life easier. It's very awkward to use, and it's not like it's self propelled or that it helps you out while you're pushing it - YOU are doing all the work, and it does little other than throw it forward a ways (when it does work in minimal, perfect snow conditions). While I love the idea of this, it so far hasn't lived up to my expectations at all, and it's not practical for me. I love the idea of not bothering with gas and relying on a battery that you recharge...but it takes soooooooo long to charge for a measly 20 minutes that it's not efficient at all. I was hoping it would make snow shoveling lighter amounts of snow easier, but it actually made it harder, which was incredibly surprising. Maybe someone can use this to where it fares better than what it did for me - YMMV. It just gets a big ol' MEH from me, though. Bummer! ... show more

  • AVOID
Style: Kit (w/4-Ah Battery + Quick Charger)
I bought this product in Oct. I never tried to use it or needed to use it until Jan., at which the return timeframe had expired. I charged the battery for about 2-3 hours but the battery never worked. I reached out to the company. They shared they didn’t have any of the same battery in stock but could send me a loaner one that was of less quality until they got more in. I received the loaner, returned the bad battery and now they won’t respond back to my emails when I follow-up regarding my replacement. The efforts to get my battery replaced are not worth it. However, simply informing others and sharing my experience will hopefully prevent others from wasting their time and money like I did. Perhaps it will cost the company a few potential customers helping them to reflect on the importance of communication and business ethics. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. Does an amazing job with the light stone in Breckenridge CO! Clears the garbage can shed and around the hot tub really well.

  • No control of blown snow
Style: Kit (w/4-Ah Battery + Quick Charger)
I used this product to clear a ten by twenty foot deck in north central Michigan. Also to clear a feeding area for some sixty wild turkey that mooch here in the winter (expensive but amusing). It works to move snow rather well actually, the problem is you are at the mercy of the wind, which has none. The snow is thrown up as much as forward, and wind currents on the deck are difficult to use. Still, for the turkey feeding station it worked adequately for a near ground groom. I'm 72 and got a bit winded, but nothing like the shovel I was using, just colder...... ... show more

  • Battery would not hold a charge after only a few uses but company shipped me a new battery!
Style: Kit (w/4-Ah Battery + Quick Charger)
I purchased this product this past February. While I only had a couple of chances to use it. I did perform like I hoped it would. Great for pathways and the clear off my deck area. I agree with some of the other reviews that it would be nice if you could divert the snow to the sides but it is what it is. As we have already started to experience some snow in my area for this winter I went to get this ready to go when I noticed that the battery will not take a charge. No light indicator and the battery will not charge. I emailed SnowJoe customer service last week and have heard nothing back as of yet. Very disappointing in this product at this time. I have owned many battery operated tools over the years and never had this issue happen with something so new. That is disappointing enough but no response from the company makes it even worse . UPDATE: I contacted SnowJoe customer service again only this time via the chat on their website. The customer service Rep Emma was great to deal with and very helpful. They are shipping me out a new battery. I have already received a shipping confirmation. Good customer service! Hopefully no issues this time. ... show more

  • Get a regular snow blower
Style: Kit (w/4-Ah Battery + Quick Charger)
Great idea! But, it's only good with light snow. Go any deeper than 8inches it get stuck constantly. Battery life is short. Before you know it you have to charge again. Little bit of elbow grease you can do more than this pup. Spend a little more and get a regular snow blower
