    • WORKS BETTER THAN EXPECTED
Style: Big Chief Front Load
Lightweight, easy to use. Have smoked many different kinds of fish and the results have been excellent. Took a couple of tries to see which smoke chip flavors we prefer and how long to keep smoking different kinds of fish but now we've figured it out. Smoked Salmon, Cobia and Tilapia. Made some really good smoked fish dip. Next up, beef jerky! The only thing that I found needed correcting with this smoker is the lack of a TOP door handle. When checking on your food or removing it, the bottom handle that comes with it is too thin and gets really hot. So, I went to a large hardware big-box store and bought an additional cheap and thicker one. Drilled two small holes on the top of door and now it's much easier (and less painful) to remove the hot door. Overall, easy to use (includes recipe book), easy to clean and no need for LP tanks or messy charcoal. I recommend a "front loading" over a "top loading" smoker. Much easier to check and putting food in and taking out, as well as cleaning. ... show more

Style: Big Chief Front Load
This does exactly what I wanted it to do. Infuse food with a great smoke flavor. You can't beat the value for money. I mostly smoke Salmon and Steelhead. Have also done spare ribs and sausage. As far as the wood goes, I use a combination of the Smokehouse wood chips and the Weber wood chips (not chunks). The Weber ones are bigger. The Smokehouse chips are almost like sawdust. I put a layer of the Smokehouse chips at the bottom (to get things going quickly), then fill up with the Weber chips. I get good smoke for about an hour with this combo. I was getting a lot less with just the smokehouse chips. We love the smoked Salmon this creates. The temperature is just right to fully cook the fish without drying it out. For foods other than fish, you have to complete cooking on the BBQ or in the oven, the smoker does not get hot enough. This is by design, and they got it right. This is a great smoker, and excellent value for the money. ... show more

the largest piece of junk smoker I have ever had the displeasure of looking at. first of all I should say that I have had a "little chief" smoker since 1984. it has been hands down the best smoker i have ever had. well you would think, "hey lets upgrade since my old one is on its last legs, it will be just a s good" well it is not. when I got the box there were no visible signs of wear on the box itself . (amazon didn't put it in a box so it was shipped just as you would see it in the store). when I opened it i found to my dismay there is literally NO PROTECTIVE ANYTHING..... no Styrofoam, no bubble wrap, heck no cardboard besides the outer box. and the first thing i see on the top... a 4 inch dent.... after getting it out of the box I found two more dents on one side, and one large dent in the front door making it impossible to remove the door before prying the metal back with a screwdriver. the metal inside was completely crumpled where the dent was, nothing a little hammering will fix. that is when i realized. this is not even remotely close to the quality of my old little chief. the metal is half as thin, all real low quality dye-punched aluminum and flimsy as heck. if you put your hand on the top and put a little pressure down on it, it shifts, bends, and warps. i went to my little chief and did the same.... solid a s a rock. i can not understate the poor quality these things are nowadays. right down to the manufacturing. it is all low quality, all dye punched metal. an example: the rivet (yes one) that hold the tray holders on the sides is all that holds the trays up. one rivet. looking at my little chief which is smaller.... 4 rivets. not only is the quality of the materials thinner, an weaker they actually failed at assembly. or making any attempt to secure the parts together. I called the company and they said it must have been amazon, so i need to call them... but it is their crappy packaging without any padding that causes all the dents everyone talks about in the reviews. i dismissed them because i liked my old unit. but know this, they lost not just my sale, but one other. i warned my neighbor who was also looking into smokers not to buy these any more. ... show more
