  • Quality Materials with Horrible Fit and OK Finish, but a Nightmare Install
I needed a quality Jeep rack to transport an 11.5 foot kayak cross-country, from Los Angeles, CA to Northern Virginia (3000 miles along Interstate 40). Please note this review is only for hardtop-only travel. I have not tried it with my soft top, bikini top, or toplesss....yet. I will update my review when the time comes to cover crossbar removal for hard top removal for summer. NOTE: I did add 60" width pool noodles for crossbar padding, they do NOT come with the Smitty kit. PROS: Quality, heavy piping on the upright supports...and stays put if you maintain it (check your bolts and tighten if necessary). Despite the cons, did what I needed it to do: transported my Kayak across the country through heavy winds, rain, and snow at speeds up to 70MPH on a 21-year old Jeep Wrangler TJ with the aerodynamics of a brick. The bars sound like a choir of meditating monks at speed, but I don't drive a Jeep for a quiet cabin experience anyway. The rack did not make any rattling noises when the bolts were properly tightened. It was pretty solid. CONS: INSTALLATION: Reading reviews here prior to purchase, I paid for the Amazon "professional installation" and got it installed in around four hours. I have custom front and rear bumpers on my TJ, so I didn't have to worry about the cutting necessary with the stock rear bumper. Still, the installer had to drill new holes in the main tubes to get this to fit my jeep. FIT AND FINISH: Absolutely horrible for a Smittybilt product. Check out my third photo, the detail where the cross-bar connects to the main tubes. Horrible. If someone wants to chime in and tell me this was installed incorrectly I will update the review. The powder coat is pretty thin as well. I don't mind tightening bolts along the way (I did it only twice across 3000 miles during high winds). CROSSBAR THICKNESS: I would NOT trust these crossbars to hold a couple of hundred pounds. They are just too thin compared to the rest of the rack. OVERALL: A good purchase, but given the quality of the fit, custom installation requirements and questionable load capacity, this thing should cost $150 less. A NOTE ON FUEL ECONOMY: As someone that meticulously tracks fuel economy, this rack costs me 1MPG at the MOST. Shifting at 2K RPM (shift-light) I still manage 14MPG (woo-hoo!) with a hardtop, 4" lift and 33" BFG tires. ... show more

  • Give yourselt the better part of a day to install. If the rack doesn't get you, your Jeep will.
Installed, this unit looks as it should and the finish is a nice satin wrinkle paint. Okay, that's it for the nice. What was delivered to my door was a box that looked as though it had been rolled end for end by the delivery driver (I laughed, sometimes a young woman does the deliveries). It's all steel pipe and knew there wasn't much that would be hurt by this treatment. The instructions are something you need to just throw away. As noted by others, is a jigsaw puzzle to put together and make note the front cross bar is the shorter of the three. Installation was pretty horrendous, most of it was trouble with the fasteners on my jeep so I will not assign blame to Smitty on that. I will point out in their directions there is a known issue with the hole placement of the rear mounts and instead of fixing the problem, they just make it your problem. I'm no stranger to having to drill out holes to get something to fit, I just accept it. What I disagree with is these holes are slotted. Have you tried to drill out a slotted hole? It's a set-up for getting wrapped up in a drill motor which is no joke, this is structural steel, not mild. I resorted to the use of my oxy/acetylene cutting torch to hog out the slots. I don't know how others have tackled this but be careful! Yes, it's a bit of a wrestling match to get it together, my best suggestion before you start would be to take the hardware bag to the hardware store and match up bolt for bolt for better SAE hardware. I wish I had that advice prior. I have brand new hex and torx drivers and found the bolts provided do not hold up well to the tension required to hold the assembly together. I stripped half of the heads out and replaced with stainless steel. Throw away the plastic knobs that are supplied to attach the cross bars, again, useless and will not hold up to the tension of assembly. In use by itself, notice a whistle at speeds over 35 mph. This has been remedied with the addition of a basket on top. Face it, a Jeep is a lousy rig if you need to haul stuff, you just have to accept sacrifice. The rack looks fine and will serve it's intended use, it's just a bear to install. ... show more

  • Solid rack for the cost but install is a beast
This rack is super heavy and durable. I'm fairly sure it's thicker tubular steel than the roll bars. You can absolutely feel the increased weight and higher center of gravity on my wrangler. The install isn't that bad except for the biggest negative I list below. If you're in good shape and work out, you'll only need someone to help you with the bolts inside the door. The biggest negative to this rack is that it doesn't fit the stock bumpers without grinding the mounting holes on the rack to be larger. If you don't have a tool capable of grinding metal, you're going to need av professional to install it. You can get by with a dremel, several sanding wheels, lots of cursing and time wasted but I recommend a die grinder. ... show more
