Description
A Small Pellet Basket is a metal basket that sits inside a woodstove and uses wood pellets; eliminating the need for electric and natural gas. Pellet baskets are a lower-cost alternative to pellet stoves. Simply place the basket in your wood stove, fill it with wood pellets, light the pellets with gel fire starter. Add more pellets, when needed. Scoop the hot pellets to one side with a metal scoop, add new pellets next to the hot pellets. The hot pellets will ignite the new pellets. Always adjust your flue for a safe working temperature. Hardwood pellets are suggested. Dimensions 12" W x 8" D x 6" high in front and 8" high in back. "Hybrid pellet basket+log burn"
As advertized. Solid construction, small size allows for placing a single log(flat side down so as not to roll out) on top of basket. I have found this method keeps a nice "looking" log burning esthetic and getting a more complete burn by radiating heat down from above by the "roasting" log on top. I start by filling basket with pellets leaving a bowl-shaped void in the center. Across the void i place a single fatwood stick which i light at the middle. The void below it alkiws for airflow neccessary for good combustion. Once the fatwood gets going i place the top log. Overall, it seems like a get a much more even burn using this "hybrid" method, using just pellets give too little heat and almost no "fireplace ambiance, but using the pellets and loading a log on top too, and re loading every 2-3 hours gets a much more even heating. Loading firebox with logs gets too hot in house!!! Loving this.

Easy conversation from wood to pellet stove
I had read the other reviews about this product and most of them were negative. They said that the fire would not light or would not stay lit, or that the pellets didn’t burn down all the way. I didn’t find any of that to be true. Actually quite the opposite. When using quality fry pellets and a small piece of fire stater, the pellets caught as expected and when the basket is full, it burns for about two and a half hours. The pellets burn down to ash and there are a lot less than when using wood. I have an antique parlor stove with a small firebox so I ordered the small basket and it fit perfectly, with a nice gap at the two ends and at the back. My stove also has a very good draft so no need for a fan. The basket is made from welded steel and should last for quite a few years with regular use. I like less ash, less smoke and less mess in my house. I am very pleased with my purchase.

Alternative way to heat
It lights it burns, but I haven’t figured out how to make it give more heat yet

Does not produce much heat
I have a soapstone woodstove. I bought the pellet basket as an alternative to cordwood. So far we have been rather unsuccessful at producing much more than a smoldering fire. If we put a very thin layer of pellets we can get it burning but the fire never gets very hot and we have to feed more pellets in every 20 minutes or so. We tried using the gel fire starter, piling the pellets in different configurations, opening the drafts, the doors, the flue, pointing a fan at the fire. The pellets are hardwood so I expected a slow burning hot fire. They work great in my pellet stove, but not so great in my woodstove. I would not recommend this product.

Works well
It works well if you use a fire starter underneath it and use igniting gel in layers. It burns for a few hours using this method. It works for what I wanted it for.

Nice sturdy piece.
Nice sturdy item. Was actually 1/2" larger than specs. So could not fit into my stove Gifted to a friend. They are loving it. I ended going with a coal grate instead.

Part 2: Burns as well as a hardwood log
Part 2: I loaded my large 1980s Troubadour wood burning stove with a small 12” pellet basket. I filled the pellets to the brim of the front wall of the basket. After ignition, the fire subsided and the chamber filled with smoke from smoldering pellets. To reignite the fire, I sprayed the pellets with a quick stream of water from a spray bottle. The fire burned hot for about 30 minutes and is functioning as well as a pellet stove or hardwood log. See part 1 video in a separate review.
