  • The hand switch worked better than I thought, saw works great
I need a new saw , this worked out nicely

  • I guess I'm not a left-blade guy...
I tried the Skil Mag77 and found it to be too heavy for type of cutting (but an awesome saw). I decided to try a left-blade direct drive (sidewinder) saw. This is a well-made saw with plenty of power. And I understand that left blade saws are supposed to allow one to see the cut line more readily, which it does. However, FOR MY STYLE OF CUTTING, which is normally with a speed square in my left hand and saw in my right, the left blade saw is just awkward for me. If I hold my speed square on the board with my left hand it puts the narrow side of the base (blade side) against the square and all of the weight on the cutoff side. With a right side blade setup, saw in right hand and speed square held to the board with my left hand, the wide/heavy side of the saw is against the square and waste side is to the right of the blade. This just works better for me. I know, tomato/tomaatoe, but that's why they make both types. And one last thing... yes, you can see the cut line better with the left blade saw, but the sawdust chute is on the left side as well putting sawdust in your line of sight and in your lap. ... show more

  • Good lefty saw
Well built saw. Cuts accurately. I am right handed, but learned using my grandad's old left bladed saw and I'm more comfortable using a lefty saw. It's nice that they include a blade wrench that stores under the handle, but it sometimes falls out during use

  • Powerful, light, left hand saw, needs brake and dust collection
Rember that for both left-handed and right-handed people, there are advantages and disadvantages to left-hand and right-hand saws. Having the blade towards the user, gives better visibility. And is especially advantageous if using with a track because you want the track on the far side from the user. The slight downside is that it shoots the debris directly at the user instead of away from user. You should always use personal protection equipment of course, but it is especially important if the saw is directing the debris towards the user. But, given the debris issue, having the blade opposite the user is considered the safer option. I notice that Skil's new electric worm drive saw actually has a dust shoot that turns the debris away from the user. Brilliant. I wish this saw had that feature. Then again, that is a much more expensive saw. I'm not sure, but that might also have a brake. In any case, I wish this one had a brake. I would have gladly paid a bit more for having the brake and dust shoot. But, this is a good value. Probably the best saw you can buy currently in its class. There is a Bosch left hand corded saw and I'm sure that one is pretty good as well for another option to look at. ... show more

  • An essential for left handers and its light weight appealed to my right handed co-workers!
Improves accuracy of my cuts as I am left eyed as well as left-handed! Otherwise would have to haul my tablesaw around instead for accurate cuts.

  • The worm-drive is worth the extra money but this is one fine saw.
I bought a worm-drive and it had a design flaw but other than that it was faultless. It was the LT (light weight) model that cost a bit more than the standard wormdrive. The button that you push to hold the blade in a fixed position for blade changing did not disengage after changing the blade. I imaging this problem has been addressed. When I started the saw all the wormdrive innards (better word?) shattered internally. The saw, 10 years old, had little use since I retired so it was out of warranty. I replaced it with this "Southpaw" because the blade is on the left like the wormdrive. I should have replaced my WD with another WD. However this is not a knock on the Southpaw it's just hearing that ding da ding ding sound again reminds me of why I bought my 1st WD 45 years ago. It cost $115 which was a fortune back then. ... show more

  • Great saw!

  • It's a beast; I'll never go right-side blade again; Skil forever
Until I got this 15-amp left-side blade Skilsaw in Aug of 2019, I'd been using my 10-amp right-side Skilsaw for 40 years. (I'm right-handed.) The difference is ASTOUNDING. I do a lot of cutting down of (heavy/dense) 3/4" Baltic Birch plywood sheets using a custom-made saw track. With the old saw, I had to work hard to move the blade through the wood. Some cuts strayed from the line because of the ergomics: I had to push forward but also pull the saw inward to the left to hug the track. Also, the saw labored on many cuts. Forgive the cliche, but this saw cuts 3/4" Baltic birch plywood like it's butter. And the ergonomics help keep the blade to the track: pushing the saw out and over to the right is so much more natural to me. Dimension lumber also cuts like butter. Oh yeah: being able to see the blade and cut-line is a huge advantage when not using a track. Note: If you're a righty whose been using a right-side blade for 40 years, it'll take a little getting used to. But once I got used to it, I can't go back. If you're a righty who's been tempted to try a left-side blade, I encourage you to get this tool. ... show more
