  • Good unit for full moon light
Color: Aurora Pro
The media could not be loaded. I took this unit to Zimbabwe, Africa, for a game count. The example photos and videos were shot in full moon light, but we had very limited naked eye visibility beyond a few meters. The attached video is one we shot in full-moon light using the unit. It performed well in full-moon light. The digital zoom is not sharp, but that is to be expected. Digital zoom is never sharp. The images were quite sharp when not zoomed. The elephants in the video vary from 80 to 120 meters distance from our location. The battery life was excellent. I went through four batteries in the 12-hour period that we used it. So, we got about 3 hours out of each battery. The unit is small and very light weight. It would easily be mounted to a visor or helmet for hands-free operation. I also used a thermal camera during the same period, so to compare the two, this unit provided a good video quality with some color while the thermal unit provided a much sharper determination of animals. The thermal unit was far superior at finding animals, down to the size of small springhares (about the size of smallish rabbit) and up to the size of giraffe and elephant, while this unit was less capable of spotting animals, it was far better at showing their true colors when we were looking for stripes or markings to determine species or genders. Changing batteries was difficult. The need to remove the subjective eyepiece to access the battery is challenging to say the least. Novice user were immediately able to use the device with very little instruction. Simply turn the dial and look through the lens. Overall, I would give this unit very high marks for the price. I have used military-grade units that did not perform as well. Be aware that if there is no moon light, this unit will perform much better with an infrared light source. I highly recommend this unit and would use it with an external infrared light. ... show more

  • No LEO or military would ever use this for NVG
Color: Aurora Pro
The concept of this camera seems pretty cool. Who wouldn't want affordable NVG that can even produce color? Well, you get what you pay for, or not? First, and the biggest gripe is that this can't handle motion. If you move, it the screen will lag behind your movements. Second, without an illuminator these devices will give you horribly bad pictures even with a little light. I tried taking pictures of the sky, and I got alot of blur. The middle "set" button has functionality that requires you to press and hold the button, but if you're too firm the button can get stuck. There are also no good attachments for these. The only one that sionyx offers is an overpriced picatinny rail that you can buy elsewhere for half the price. Overall dissapointed, and it seems like the best option is to spend the money for an actual NVG 2 or 3 product ... show more

  • Not a bad device but some misleading advertising and wanting capabilities.
Color: Aurora Pro
So I purchased this for boating as I do a fair amount of boating at night. I had contemplated purchasing a FLIR before I came across SiOnyx but the high initial cost had me wait. Since FLIR is a grey image and SiOnyx is "color" I thought I had found a perfect alternative night vision with low cost and being able to see navigation aids. Pros 1. Color. For boating, this is indispensable as navaid color and boat light color is important. 2. Price point. This being the top of the line at $1000 puts it within reach of most buyers. 3. Portability. I can move to other vessels, choose mounting locations (more on that later) and put it away minimizing theft. 4. Functionality away from the boat. I can use it as a camera or video camera. 5. WiFi transmission of the image to a WiFi capable device. No wire routing. Big plus. Cons 1. While there is a setting to "Invert Image," it ONLY inverts the menu, not the actual image. I contacted Sionyx about this. Their solution? Disable tablet autorotation and flip the tablet. Okay, great if you're using a tablet. If you're transmitting to an installed flat panel in your boat, you're not inverting the boat. So you have to mount it right side up and you won't have the option to mount upside down from the overhead. 2. I had numerous camera disconnects. Sionyx is aware of this and their solution is to place your device in airplane mode and enable ONLY wifi. That did solve the Sionyx problem but you maybe think I run other wireless device from my tablet? Yeah I do. 3. I wanted to display my navigation app and the Aurora Pro image in split screen mode on my tablet. So I went about setting it up, added my Navi app, went to add the Sionyx app and guess what? No Siontx app. It's not split screen compatible on Andriod. Are you kidding me? 4. Lots of choppiness and lag in the image. Sionyx suggests the following: reduce the frame rate to 30fps. Well, okay, but if your camera can't transmit smoothly at it's highest frame rate? Why do you even offer that option? I suspected the lag and choppiness was due to processor load as I'm running other apps. I purchased an identical tablet removed all non-essential apps and ONLY run Sionyx on it. It has been smooth since. 5. Misleading advertising. I bought the Pro because it was the only model advertised for "Moonless nights." False. It is not capable of displaying a usable image on a moonless night. Considerable noise. Sionyx solution when I contacted them about this? Purchase their $250 IR Illuminator. Well gee, if I need an IR illuminator, I guess it's not capable of moonless nights is it? I could have purchased the Aurora AND the IR Illuminator for about the same price as the Aurora Pro. 6. Color. As you can see from the photos, a definite green washout on near moonless night. Sionyx will tell you this is normal. Okay, I guess it's not misleading as it IS color night vision. Just the colors may not be true to life. Good news is greed and red light did show up correctly. Summary Overall, this is a land color night vision designed for land use and can be used for boating. It IS NOT a color nigh vision designed for marine use, period. It lacks critical design features unique to marine use like inverting images for permanent flat screen displays, ability to play nice with other running apps and ability to play nice with other wireless devices. While it has its drawbacks, if you do the workarounds above like a dedicated tablet for use, it does add value to my night marine safety. ... show more

If you need good night vision, but the other stuff is too expensive; THIS is the right buy. Works very well at night, super happy with it. No lag, Good FOV, Works great and I can record as a bonus.

  • 2.7k 30fps
Color: Aurora Pro
Great quality camera but with the amount of money you spend on it and the fact it has a 1" sensor you would expect it to have the ability in todays filming quality to have an option to film at 30 fps and 4k. The 2.7k 30fps is fine in my case as I only have this in use as a stationary camera. I also notice if it is going to be more than stationary while filming it lags a lot. Again in my case I need the camera as a stationary camera so I am fine. Maybe I will expect better upgrades on the next PRO version. ... show more
