  • When purchased on Amazon
Style: Grey
These machines are mass produced and the machines well oiled gears dry up and get gummy. I've purchased 6 machines in the last 15 years. 5 Singer brand and one Viking. I say 5 Singer but I returned 2 due to damage from Amazon shipping. My first Singer was so long ago and $75 on black Friday at JoAnn Fabrics. It was great for sewing 1 cosplay each month for 4 years. My husband gifted me a husquva Viking H class E20 from Robert Sewing Center, it was great for 3 dresses and a costume each month for 6 years with 4 cleaning and oiling services. I needed an upgrade a this point and a second machine since I didn't like waiting inbetween servicing (2-3 week wait- I did get it back once within a week it was so busy with work, I couldn't pick it up for another week and a half). I got my second Singer | Heavy Duty 4432 Sewing Machine, purchased on Amazon, in April 2017. It was a work horse and I loved it. I had it serviced by Robert Sewing Center and Friends and Family Vaccumm Center. I tried patching a thick fleece blanket my rabbits tore through and something in the machine snapped half way through when I looked away, I was going to take it in but at this point I thought it would be a good idea to get a newer model as it would be the same price to take it in and have it fixed. My third Singer Heavy Duty 4452 Sewing Machine, purchased on Amazon, in June 21 2019, worked like a dream for 3 months. I had a baby and made a new baby outfit every week. I thought it could handle light weight baby clothes. ... The box was damaged when I got it but didn't feel like returning it asap if it worked. The reverse was jammed end of October 2019. The cost to fix it was more than the machine so I contacted Singer and Amazon and had it returned to Amazon- restocking fee. I have a long rant about that and how rebates work but that is for another post. I then purchased SINGER | Heavy Duty 4423 Sewing Machine, my 4th Singer via Amazon on November 2019. At this point, I am now a stay at home mom and wanted to use the Amazon credit I had left from the 1st return. The box was scruffed up and the styrofoam came out in a pieces. I tested it out to see if it was worth replacing with the same item and it worked well enough. I think it was dropped because after sewing two baby outfits, there was a rattling. So i had it replaced the following week. My replacement SINGER | Heavy Duty 4423 Sewing Machine was not damaged upon arrival and worked like a dream. However, once looking in the bobbin case, I saw that there were chunks of linty old oil that were rubbery and ... It was just chunky bits mixed with not that much lint. Almost looked like I put it through a year worth of sewing without a cleaning. I purchased some singer oil and cleaned it up. I didn't want to return it and get another machine with gummy oil. Last week (month into sewing a dress shirt, two PJ pants) a dress I was making out of lightweight jersey knit was sucked into the machine (my fault) and knocked the timing out of wack. Which btw, is annoying to fix, need metric Allen key wrenches, not USA inch ones, to get to the bottom of this singer. Size 2.5mm key wrench. Becareful not to strip the screw. Had to run to Home Depot to purchase new 5mmx 5mm set screw socket crown bolt. Video how to fix timing: https://youtu.be/-QFd7eC-1LI My husband has asked if I was the common problem with all the trouble with each machine but they were all different problems and with the internet and handbook. I am a wiz at trouble shooting and caring for my sewing machine and am quick to admit it was my fault (like when the tension and stich issues, those I can fix as I go). I am thinking for my next machine, I will have to go to a Singer store to purchase a singer machine so the warranty is wroth it. It just going to suck to have to go back to that store if any issues come up. The closest one is an hour away and in the city with parking... A baby. It's just not ideal. I hope this review is helpful... I like SINGER, was thinking of Husqvarna Viking or even Brother has good reviews but I am 5 deep with Singer and know most of their machine issues and their fixes. Hate to have to adapt it to another type of manufacturer. ... show more

  • DO NOT BUY! Heavy duty is the overstatement of the century.

Where do I start?! I wanted to love this machine, as i have an old singer from the 70s that i love, it was passed down to me from my grandmother, and could straight stitch through anything! Ive also had 2 Brother machines, both consumer models, both able to run bartacks through 3/4 webbing like a hot knife through butter. This Singer HD however, is the worst machine i have ever owned. It looks good and boasts a number of great stitch options, but thats where the positives end. The build quality is abysmal. When i received it, it was not ready to sew. Almost everything on the machine was loose or falling off. After going through the machine, ensuring everything was tight, attached, and ready to rock, i started sewing a few test stitches, only to have the bobbin feed dislocate itself inside the machine. After fixing this, i began again, and within 3 minutes, had bent the needle at low speed, through a cotton pillow case, on a standard zig-zag stitch. Figuring perhaps it was a fluke, i began again with a new needle. Within 10 seconds, the second needle impacted the presser foot plate and broke. Inspecting the machine, i tried to determine why it was having alignment issues right out of the box. Everything seems perfectly aligned at low speed when rotating by hand. Starting again, with a new needle, at slow speed, on a straight stitch, 5 stitches in, it broke another needle. So it becomes obvious that the machines alignment from the factory is off, or there is a major fault with the presser foot feed. Starting once more, on low speed, with a zig zag stitch, the machine breaks the needle, binds the bobbin, and dislocates the bobbin feed. I have sewn over 4000m of fabric with my old Brother, and not once had a feed issue or broken a needle. I am beyond fed up with the singer "heavy duty" and would label it a paperweight. To further expound on issues with the singer, it has the worst speed control i have experienced on a sewing machine. Sometimes it is smooth linear power/speed increase throughout the pedal travel, and sometimes, you get to 3/4 pedal travel before the machine even starts to sew. Other times, a mere 1/16 of pedal travel will ramp up stitch speed to 1000. I wish i had purchased anything else. The Singer "heavy duty" is anything but heavy duty. If i could return it i would. It is an absolute garbage machine, and should be considered light duty at best. Look elsewhere for a good heavy duty sewing machine and save yourself hours of turse words thrown at this machine. ... show more
