  • So glad I bought this
Color: Black
I am a beginner sewer and I had been trying to find the best machine for beginners. I read a lot of reviews, but finally decided on this one, not based on the reviews, but based on how it looks. I know that wasn’t the smartest reasoning, but I have to say, my gut reaction based on looks alone were a great factor for me. This machine is phenomenal. My sewing instructor was even impressed with how well this machine works. She was first putting doubts in my head by saying that Singer was not like it used to be and the new machines were inferior, but then she used it herself and said it was almost as good as her machine from Germany. This machine sewed easily through jeans, worked well on polyester and silk, and looks great on my sewing table. It was so easy to figure out how to thread and use. I have absolutely no reservations on this purchase. Looks great, works better. Buy this and see for yourself. ... show more

  • My First Sewing Machine

This machine is great! Of course, it takes some time to learn just like any skill. However, it is very mobile and simple to use for beginners. Highly recommend it!

  • Not for absolute beginners
Color: Gray
I had to have this machine serviced about a month and a half after I bought it. I take most of the responsibility for this, mostly because I tried to sew through a particularly thick section of vinyl. HOWEVER, there's a few things I'd like to mention in the hopes of helping out folks like me who are looking for a first, domestic sewing machine. Negatives- 1. This machine did not come with a paper user manual. I'm ok using a PDF as a manual, if just given that I have my cell phone with me any time I'm using this machine. However, the manual is for several machines in the "heavy duty" line, so not all of the pictures are accurate to this machine specifically. Also, the PDF is set up so that one page is in English, then the next 3 pages are reproductions of the English page in various other languages, so it is very difficult to navigate the PDF by page number, even going off of the table of contents. 2. The user manual is not comprehensive. This is my first domestic sewing machine, so although there is a flyer in the package which shows you how to thread the upper and lower tensions for the first time, there are still a bunch of stitches on the machine which I haven't used and are not in the manual. There is a stitch guide on Singer's website, but it is all images which you must then click to get a basic description. Basically, it feels like I have the figure out length, width, and tension for about 75% of the stitches on my machine on my own. I wouldn't really have a problem with this either, were it not for the fact that just getting the timing fixed on this machine starts at $60, which makes me reluctant to mess around with settings. 3. Not actually "heavy duty" by a lot of definitions. Essentially, it seems a more accurate description of this is something along the lines of, "Heavy [Domestic] Duty". As in, the machine has handled materials like vinyl and canvas for me, but the timing went completely off pretty much immediately after hitting a single section of vinyl which was twice as thick as the rest. The folks at the repair shop said that I shouldn't even be doing vinyl or canvas at all on this machine, and that pretty much anything I might consider heavy duty should be done on an industrial machine. 4. Not a ton of accessories. It seems like common practice for manufacturers to only include the bare-minimum of feet. You get four feet with this machine, which is great, but there are a lot of other little accessories which it seems the manufacturer could have included extra or spare, just for convenience's sake. Stuff like the spool holders and bobbins. Maybe the bobbin case cover. Positives 1. Easy to use once you've got the basics. Takes less than 30 seconds for me to reset the thread to begin sewing again. Automatic threading tool is great. Bobbin case is easily accessible. Seems like all the switches and dials and levers are manual and easy to find. 2. Plenty of features. While I mentioned earlier that the machine may have too many stitches for me as a beginner, it also has more directly useful features like the automatic buttonhole setting and the button sewing setting. I already mentioned the automatic threading tool. The machine also has an LED light built-in, which is nice if just because I shouldn't have to worry about changing it nearly as soon as I would have to if it were an incandescent. 3. Sturdy, yet portable. Really the biggest reason I went with this machine in the first place, and it has not disappointed me in that regard. Metal frame and stainless steel surface in the sewing area make me feel a whole lot less anxious about using this machine in general (I'm a big guy with big, shaky hands, and I haven't managed to poke myself with the needle or scratch the stainless surface or knock the machine over... yet). I work in steel and can imagine the sturdier frame also contributes to less frequent timing adjustments, but I don't know that for sure. It came with a basic cover and has a carrying handle, which made it relatively easy to get to the repair shop. ... show more

  • Heavy duty and great for beginners
Color: Black
As someone who's never sewed anything before this, I love this machine! It's super easy to thread by just following the numbers on the machine and doesn't jam easily. I've sewn through 4 layers of thick fleece with it and it holds up well! I would recommend this for anyone looking to get into sewing. ... show more

  • Great sewing machine!
Color: Gray
full disclosure: This is my first new sewing machine since Santa brought me one in 1968! The only reason I broke down and bought a new one was, I needed something that would sew through 4 layers of faux fur, making plushies. Since my old Singer Golden Touch & Sew was still going strong (and I sew A LOT), I thought I would use the new Singer just for heavy duty things. It worked like a charm through several layers of faux fur and quilted tote bags. Then I decided to try it out on a Bible cover. It was a learning experience, but we learned a lot. IT DOESN'T LIKE TO BE THREADED INCORRECTLY! If you have any trouble with this machine, try rethreading it. The handy-dandy needle threader makes these 70 year old eyes happy. The dials for stitch length and width and decorative are easy to use. (my old one had cams you had to replace for different stitches). I like the fact that it is not computerized- less to go wrong. The clear drop-in bobbin make it easy to see how much thread you have left. (I do miss my old pushbutton bobbin winder- I didn't need to unthread it.) I also like the fact that is it relatively light, as my old one was VERY HEAVY. I felt somewhat guilty, buying a new machine, but the price made it a bargain. As I have been sewing since I was 6 years old (made my Barbie doll clothes), I am pretty sewing machine literate. The directions are clear and easy to follow. It feels sturdy and handles well. It would not be a bad sewing machine for a beginner to learn on. ... show more

  • STOP LOOKING AT THE REVIEWS. JUST BUY IT.
Color: Black
First time sewer right here. I needed some patches sewn on a uniform and I was quoted $50. I thought that was ridiculous so I pulled out the old family sewing machine and it did great until I got to the name tape, which was a little thicker than the other patches. I must’ve been trying for about two hours, but the family sewing machine just couldn’t complete the job. I bought this sewing machine and I was blown away. I knew the basics of how to set up a sewing machine and I had my new machine set up within minutes. THIS MACHINE IS A BEAST. It stitched the name tape fast and beautifully. 10/10 would recommend. ... show more
