  • Robust set of tools
I'm just a beginner, but the instructor at Rockler kept telling me I should buy the larger set turning tools and so I did. Just not from them. The tools are much bigger/longer than I thought they'd be, but that actually seems to work in my favor. They seem up to the challenge of rounding our a blank without jumping around as the smaller carbide tools seemed to do. The set is well-thought out; you get what you need to start turning right away whether it's a handle or a bowl or something else. The first project I'm making is a set of handles. While the supplied handle is a good one, changing from one tool to the next isn't as smooth as I'd like it. Oh, the handle is well-designed and it's just a matter of turning the two set screws a couple of times and one tool comes out and the other pops in. But there you are, in turning nirvana, your tool work giving you shavings that Robert Sorby would envy and then you need to break that moment to switch out one tool in the handle to another. It takes a matter of seconds, but having each of these on their own, I-turned-this-myself handle provides some good practical lessons in turning and gives me a chance to personalize my new tools. These are definitely a nice set of tools that will do you proud and at about the price of two carbide-tipped tools, a bargain. But they are not a cheaply made set, just a thrifty set that will look like a million bucks once I've turned all the handles. ... show more

  • Good weight, length, and balance.
I bought extra handles so that I would not have to keep changing tool/handle. There are times when I'm back and forth between 2 or 3 tools so I just didn't want to waste the time do the change overs. "Heavy" -- just the way I like my tools. They've held up well in early use ... EXCEPT, I purchased some radiused "square" bits and that cutter chipped out in the first 15 minutes of use. On a corner so that two edges were unusable. They did replace the cutter, but I've not used it since so I'm not sure. Not sure also because a friend bought the same set a couple of weeks later and he also bought some radiused cutters and had a similar problem -- two small (minute, but clearly visible) chips out of the edge. If your OK with, or prefer, a heavy tool and a straight handle, I highly recommend considering Simple Turning Tools. ... show more

  • Harrison hit it right with these!
We bought a full size lathe and needed turning tools to get started. This is a great set and we really like it! Easy to use, you feel safe as someone starting out on the lathe. This is a complete set to get you started, ya. We have turned a number of projects and have not felt that we lacked the right tool. We also did not feel that the tools did not do smooth enough work or fine enough work. The handle is very nice and tools seem to be very very high quality. They came very well packed and individually packed. Really awesome. I secretly wished they would have thrown in the other two optional square cutters (that have slight radius) to get us hooked on buying them. Plus a little excitement if you buy the deluxe set. ;) Changing out the handle is fast and easy. We wondered if it would be an issue, but 30 seconds tops to get two set screws movin' and yes you can buy or make more handles. In the next version, I would like the tool handle not to roll if you set it on the bench - a small request. Be sure to see his YouTube videos too. A side note: these tools are nearly(?) stainless, they do not stick to a magnetic holder. ... show more

  • Fantastic!
These turning tools are a dream! I previously turned with steel tools, and it got to the point where I feared the detailing portion of turning because the tools would catch, ruining hours of work. Sharpening became a constant chore, so I decided to give these carbide tools a try and they are fantastic! These tools make turning a breeze, and they cut wood like butter. They are solid, and the long aluminum handle gives you plenty of control over your cuts. Worth every penny! ... show more

  • Well made, easy to use and effective
These tools are awesome! I have some other carbide wood turning tools but decided to upgrade — and these ARE an upgrade. They cut easily peeling back wood neatly on each pass. They are exceptionally well made. I highly recommend.

  • This will make old tools obsolete!
Harrison hit it out of the park with these. I am NOT a professional woodworker, and work on projects in my garage shop for fun and therapy. I don't want to spend hours mastering specific angles and rolls with lathe tools, and I don't want to spend hours on a honing stone either. These tools are the iPhone of lathe tools. They make it so simple, it seems literally revoloutionary. If Harrison gets the marketing down on this, they will make all other lathe cutting tools obsolete. Well worth the money, and a pleasure to work with. If I could make one suggestion, it would be to design an easier means of attaching the cutter to the handle. Maybe a quick release or a screw that could be turned by hand, not an allen wrench. Awsome tools! ... show more
