  • are still quite good if you have a good video card that divides ...
As of 2016, this is a very old sim by video game standards. The graphics, which were considered incredible in 2008, are still quite good if you have a good video card that divides up the processing tasks with the main processor. Even though they are not up to the incredible textures of more modern sims, it's good to remind oneself that it's not an expensive sim either. At the time of development, Windows XP was the hot OS but this sim will still run well in Windows 7 or 10. The real attraction to this sim - and this is what makes it so good - is the mindset that envelops the player. To be successful, the player will need to plan his/her course, search out the enemy, plan on how best to attack the enemy and, all the while, avoid being killed by the enemy. If there is any one downside to this sim, it is the learning curve. By it's nature, having so much capability available to the captain, this video game requires the player to simply invest the time needed to learn how to use all the options. In the meantime, plan on getting killed a lot. One real perk here is the availability of a lot of online help and subsim.com. ... show more

  • Wanted the actual DVD, not a download
LOVE Wolves of the Pacific! BUT was disappointed that you did not actually send me the DVD of it. I would willingly have paid extra for the postage. The reason for the order is that my current DVD is corrupted. When attempting to download from the Library, I get error messages (138, 218, 240, 375 & 389), and it would only download 4.20GB instead of the 6GB the game has. Even after trying to delete my old game, I get the message: "Setup has detected a more functional product installed. Setup will now terminate." So, I'm also not seeing the new missions supposedly available. Stuck and disappointed. : ( ... show more

  • Download was easy. Works perfectly on my Win 7.
I have a fairly new desk top computer (solid state "hard drive") running Win 7. I bought the downloadable version of Silent Hunter: Wolves Of The Pacific- Gold and had no problems with the download and it's playing just fine. No compatibility issues, no nothing. Downloaded, installed, and started playing immediately. As far as the game play, it's my first Sub game and I find it completely playable. If you want a game that does NOT require patience, clever planning, foresight, etc... play something else. It's very easy to speed the game up so that when nothing is happening and all you need to do is get to the patrol area, you can do so very quickly. I haven't found anything at all wrong with the game. Should I come across something, I will edit this review. ... show more

  • Be aware that downloads and updates may be problematic.
I thought that for the first time ever(for me that is), instead of waiting to receive a disk, that I would download this program and have some weekend fun with it. We have what my local phone company calls High Speed DSL service..... well you how that goes: it took 12+ hours to download the nearly 5GB of program materials..... finished up around 3am in the morning. The next day, the install seemed to be flawless....... One thing I have learned over the decades of computer building, installation, and such is that you nearly ALWAYS want to go register and get any applicable defect patches/updates ........ even before your first attempt at use when possible. The download for this software is not new and the update is a full step beyond what you are buying! You are buying OLD version 1.3 and the new update which lists a LOT of fixes to the program defects is V.1.4 which dates back in 2007..... there have been a LOT of changes to Windows since then and such so you figure that after 5 years you had aught to use it, right? Well, listen up kiddies..........(humor) I went to the UBSoft website and clicked to install the new patch - DO NOT do that - click to save it if you do anything, you will see why later on here...... I carefull read and reread the installation instructions - takes 30 seconds they are so skimpy. 1: So, it took it 32 minutes to download for install. Upon clicking install, instantly it popped up saying, "You have an older version installed and must delete the older version first to install this newer patch version. Then, It instantly goes away and you will have to download it all yet again...... see why you MUST click save it? Nice, eh? 2: Sooooo, I uninstalled the older version, which by the way seems to have removed ALL of it, and that means..... so much for the extra value of the Gold Edition..... There are no options: all or nothing! 3: I then again logged on to UBiSoft to dowload the V.1.4 Patch. It tells you that you are now installing the full newly updated game, a lot more than a simple patch I guess. So after the download, I click on the Install Button and immediately it popped up saying, "You MUST have an older version on this computer to install this update." and then terminated. 4: Either way you lose! It will not work with or without an installed program...... don't you just love this stuff?? You know? A true "Strike any Key" type of moment! 5: After working through their system, I eventually submitted a formal request for help..... maybe next week.... I will keep you posted. 6: Lastly: There is NO manual nor help with ship's torpedo settings nor anything but the internal short hold the curser over it info box. It is in many ways similar to the older sub sims, but it is NOT the same - it can be quite confusing. Oh well, documentation if often a problem, right? This has NONE! So, I will reinstall and try to make the game work without patches, see how it does. You know? After all of this hassle, UBiSoft has had 5 years since this patch was issued! You would really think that by now, they would actually have fixed the patch to work seemlessly, right? That is why I gave it 2 stars only..... not for the game but for the foolishness. I do hope that it will be a lot of fun...... assuming it even works. :-) More on this later: Gary UPDATE: If you use the V1.3 that they are selling to you here, it will work... most the time. I have it on a fast XP system and it only hangs or has to be rebooted once in a while. Ubisoft never bothered to answer the formal official request for help with the malfunctioning update.... so much for their customer service,eh? Oh well. It is a slow - looooong running - game, but the really disappointing thing is that you cannot actually "save" your current mission position and complete it later. It has a "save" setup, but it does NOT save where you are. Instead, it has saved a scenario that you like, and you must restart at the beginning of that mission each time. How many of us can sit in one place for 8 hours or more? Some folks do have to work? :-) So you can never finish a war patrol, or any lengthy sceanrio. The older games ALL had a real save mode, Ubi just figured we didn't need it I guess. I guess I am just diapponted with this all the way around..... but, be that as it may, if you like a Sub Sim, and if it works on your system, you can have some fun with it, but be ready to expect to never win.... it is really tough, even on the easy settings. (You will see that note on several other reviews as well.) Final Eval: This game has so many defects in it that it is just not worth the effort. I am removing it from my computer as a waste of space and time. I am disapponted, for it has some much improved graphics that older Sub Sims didn't. I enjoyed some of the older ones, and they were a lot of fun. Save your money, this is not worth even $10 let alone the $20 it cost. Down graded to 1 star since zero is not an option. ... show more

  • This is the way to go!
The game has issues, but I knew that going in. Various fellow gamers have done mod work to address some of the bugs. My "way to go" is about the digital download. You get the instant download goodness WITH the final install being identical to the install if you got the physical media. So, mods will all work without issue + you have the last version they ever made. Previously I had bought it through Steam and ended up with an old version and a custom install that shut me out of the aftermarket mods. If you want it RIGHT NOW, this is the one you want. Don't get Steamed. ... show more

  • No U-Boats or German Items
I love SH4. I purchased this "Gold" edition to get the U-Boats. However, there is none of that in the game I downloaded. The German quick missions screen is empty, and the Career continually "crashes" after the initial screen to select a captain. Go with standard SH4.

  • without a doubt the greatest ww2 sub sim of all time
Hands down , without a doubt the greatest ww2 sub sim of all time . Worth every penny i paid . As a ww2 sub geek i am thrilled just to have any modern game that takes place in this era dealing with submarines ( there really arent any others i can think of to compare ) , but the fact it is such a solid simulator and so utterly satisfying to play is just so awesome . So set the mood by watching victory at sea and das boot and playing this game . kill silently and vanish beneath the waves !!!! ... show more
